Transport of a Bicycle from Melbourne to Coffs Harbour NSW ?

I have bought a mountain bike (non-electric) in Melbourne, and I can get it boxed up at a bike store (142cm x 30 x 80; 18kg). I want it up at my house in Coffs Harbour, NSW. How to get a good deal?

I spoke to Pack-n-Send, and they wanted $550. I contacted TNTCouriers, and they are much better at $200 for commericial to residential … but as my wife has a home cleaning business with ABN, i think (?) I could try to use their commercial-to-commercial price (still delivered to my home address) and get it at something like $160.

BUT is there a cheaper way to do this? Unfortunately the box is too long for Aus. Post. Is there a rail service?

I tried looking on Facebook Marketplace for 'removalist', but was overwhelmed, and it wasn't clear who was going to drive all the way from Melbourne past Coffs (presumably on the way to Brisbane)

Is there some place I could contact an airline traveller, whom I could pay to bring it with them directly as luggage?

Other ideas? cheers!

Shouldn't you have researched this before you purchased the bike?

What is the value of the bike?

    Road trip!

Did you ask at the bike store? They might know a better way.
Sometimes it’s cheaper if you drop it off and pick it up at the shipping facility instead of door to door.

Muzeeb I had a family member who was going to drive it up for me at Christmas, unfortunately she has had a crisis, and is now not coming up. Value of the bike $1000

Leave it out front, there is a chance the thief goes north, rinse repeat, pick it up from Coffs Harbor Cash Converters in 3 months ;)

Bus companies used to have a pretty set rate for transporting bikes
Greyhound freight $135 depot to depot, a bit more for pickup.

    https://greyhoundfreight.com.au/freight-specials/

    • thank you, but that information is out of date. I have called and spoken to them twice, and they no longer do freight within or between Vic and NSW.
The Premier Motor Service in NSW is awesome, they only charge $25 for a bike all the way up the coast … BUT you need someone to physically meet the bus to load it on … seems to hard to organise that at a distance.

    • Greyhound doesn't seem to have a freight depot in Victoria or NSW.

Bugger me, you are right - I certainly sent one a few years back.

I looked at firefly express which is cheaper, buy they don't seem to go north of Sydney.

Looks like Bus travel has really declined in Oz.

Look at Transdirect.com.au I did a quick look for Melb to Coffs and it offered Allied Express at $135ish, that was for a 20kg carton 100x79x25 (rough bike carton size) for commercial to residential.

Festive500 starts on Saturday. Ride it. You'll nail the challenge and more Melbourne to Coffs.

But Melbourne to Coffs seems to be all uphill according to my map.

      • Can't be ALL uphill, both are pretty close to sea level

So your that person on gumtree who is organising a courier to pick up an item? πŸ˜…

    • No, that's not me. Is that a good way? I will check it out.

    • Any oil rigs off the coast of Coffs?
      Any military bases at Coffs?

      • yes, there is a military base … and actually I am ana ctive member of the Reserves. ???

          @elgrande

          Yep, we've found him 😊

          Great detective work.

          • @MS Paint: haha, i don't actually know what you're talking about! i might have looked into this months ago on gumtree, i can't recall. Certainly i don't have any active or expired ads relating to this. What's the go?

@judoman09: It's a running gag with all the scams on Gumtree.

The scammers offers to purchase your item at full price, send a fake payment transfer confirmation (or similar) and get a courier to pick up the item.

The scammers excuse for using a courier is because they typically work on an oil rig or confined to their military base.

      • No oil rigs, but there are fishing rigs.
No real military bases, but each of the branches have a cadet presence in Coffs (or what was bush years ago).
Subs used to visit in the 60's through about 85 until the Jetty deteriorated too much for them to tie up to it.
