If you’ve clicked on the link in OP, you would’ve noticed the price says A$379.95

  • +5

    $309 with the subscription hack

    • +3

      What's the subscription hack?

    • Please explain ?

      • +9

You pay with a card that has exactly $309 GoPro attempts to take the rest as a separate charge for the subscription but can’t since you don’t have the balance required.

If you use something like Revolut you can load it with the specific amount.

They give up after a few attempts and you still get the go pro.

        • Or you might miss the deal as they might have caught onto this by now. Worth a shot though

          • +2

@J6: I doubt it. They don’t seem to care at all. People have been doing it for awhile now. It’s not new.

I did the same thing last year..

          • +4

@J6: Can confirm this still works - purchased the Go Pro 11 from recent Black Friday sales.

            • @Zackyis: Do you mind sharing what you paid for the 11?

              • +2

@wittyusername: I got the 11 bundle, subscription, SD card and travel accessory pack for $611 in their BF sale.

              • @wittyusername: 544 with the accessories pack. The subscription is charged as a separate payment.

          • @J6: I did the subscription hack only two weeks ago.

        • +2

Great explanation, but basically being dodgy af :/

Then again, they do give up. The conundrum.

          • +1

@Dreamcast: For me, the subscription was worthless. They didn’t offer an alternative that was on special.

It’s still a win win. They still get paid, you still get the product. You don’t get the subscription, they don’t worry about service costs of you using subscription.

        • +5

After 1st glance I was wondering what is "a card that has exactly $309 GoPro attempts"???
Pro tip, use some commas, they are free.

      • +6

All you need to do is pay for GoPro with PayPal. They do not process subscription payment straight away (usually 24 hours later). After you pay for GoPro go into your PayPal subscriptions and cancel GoPro subscription.

        • +4

GoPro took my $70 even though the payment amount didn't include the subscription amount. I bought two using different emails so this comment cost me $140. I logged on immediately and cancelled my subscription for each purchase. It didn't help. According to my PayPal account, the payments have been processed.

          • +1

@swoopalicious: They must have changed the way they process subscription payment in last two weeks then. I did exactly this 2 weeks ago and had zero issues plus other OzB members did the same

            • +1

@kev98: It's still a nice price for the Hero 11 black delivered. $546 including the subscriptions. Apologies for sounding ungrateful.

            • @kev98: I did it only two weeks ago, I doubt they changed it.

          • @swoopalicious: well, possibly the lesson here is test with one first and confirm.

          • @swoopalicious: How soon after going through the checkout did you cancel the Paypal payment permission?

The delay between checkout and sub payment may vary depending if it's business hours or the weekend, weekend orders dont seem to get processed until Monday U.S. time, people often think their order has failed due to this delay… …

Playing it safe I had the Paypal page open so I could cancel the payment permission seconds after checking out…

            • @FLICKIT: Two minutes according to the emails. Order placed for the camera, 9:10am, authorised payment of $475.97 for the camera from PayPal at 9:10am, subscription cancelled 9:12, authorised payment of $69.99 for the subscription from PayPal at 9:12. I didn't authorise this extra payment. It was processed automatically. The only amount I approved was $475.97.

I cancelled the subscription on the GoPro site, not via PayPal. Is this the issue?

              • +2

@swoopalicious: You need to cancel it on PayPal’s site

                • @kev98: It's too late for me but I've cancelled it. The way to cancel a payment in PayPal isn't obvious but have it open as Flickit suggested. https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/autopay/

Others later in the thread have had the same issue.

                  • +1

@swoopalicious: Yea that sucks. You could try disputing the subscription payment through PayPal.

When I bought mine i logged into paypal straight away and removed GoPro from my subscription/autopay page. The next day I received payment failed from GoPro however ignored it. They sent a total of 3 payment failed for subscription emails however I still received the GoPro with no issue

              • +7

                @swoopalicious:

I cancelled the subscription on the GoPro site, not via PayPal. Is this the issue?

YES, that's the issue… When you go through the checkout you give them permission to charge you in the future without having to approve every transaction, so they can bill you for the subscription each year…

What you needed to do…. Straight after you finish the checkout go to Paypal >>> Settings>>> Payments>>> select the Gopro auto-payment permission and cancel it so Gopro dont have permission to bill you again in the future…

This link may get you to the auto-payments:
                https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/autopay/

An example of a Paypal Auto-payment permission page, go there and click the cancel:
                https://i.postimg.cc/BQVs4v7k/Paypal-Subscriptions.jpg

Once the money has gone from Paypal there's no turning back, they almost never refund the subscription fee…

                • @FLICKIT: It looks like my payment was processed the exact same time I cancelled the subscription on the GoPro site. Bugger!

                  • +1

@swoopalicious: Cancelling it on the Gopro site will only cancel it so you don't get billed again next year, they still bill you for the initial subscription…

The hack to avoid paying the subscription is to block the subscription payment which usually happens a while after you go through the checkout, They usually bill for the hardware immediately, you block the payment permission, then they try to charge the subscription but they're blocked, so you end up not paying for it…

                    • @FLICKIT: Thank you for clearing things out! I can confirm the cancelling on the Paypal method works - as long as they don't deny shipping the product in the end…
I got so into cancelling the subscription that I forgot to use my UniDays discount… wasted $15 because of my carelessness…

                      • @JustMR: Update: GoPro sent an email to me, telling me that the subscription didn't go through and I have to pay them loll

                        • @JustMR: ignore it ;) … you'll probably get 2 or 3 of them…

                          • @FLICKIT: Good advice! I will pretend my inbox is 'broken' - just like my Paypal auto pay. Thanks!!

                            • @JustMR: It's no issue, they'll just cancel the subscription after a couple of days, they'll still send out your hardware order..

                  • @swoopalicious: I wouldn't be surprised if cancelling it with gopro is what caused it to be charged immediately.

If you are cancelling they would want to settle any outstanding amounts prior to removing your card data/paypal approval from the system.

        • Canceled on PayPal before subscription was charged.

          Fingers crossed.

          Many thanks

    • Thanks definitely gonna do this

      • Did it work for you? Mixed comments above

        • nah not yet. still deciding if i want to go for 10 or 11 instead but will give it a shot and report back

    • +1

Just tried this! It worked :D

  • Good work on the research OP! @Maglia Nera

  • Get it for $370 with unidays discount

    • -1

Do yiu have a code ? Thanks

    • -4

      $309.96 + $69.99 (for the subscription) = $379.95

      • +3

Unidays discount takes off another $10

  • I was 2.5 weeks out of warranty with my old Go Pro 4 back in the day and it had a bleeding LCD. Common fault when googled. Denied a repair/replacement.

    • +2

That was probably around 2014? Back when our consumer protections weren’t as good

      • +1

Spot on, maybe 2015 from memory the warranty claim.

      • +2

No not really. ACL started already by then. It was just a dodgy company to deal with. Although i have an old go pro, i hate companies like this.

        • +3

I was working electronics retail then and it changed massively around then. Lots of meetings and policy changes in response etc. There were protections but it was very much a grey area and so unclear that manufacturers just said too bad so sad almost all the time, then it changed and it was very common for things to get fixed up due to "reasonable time"

          • +4

@MindGrenadius: Doesn't matter whatsoever. If you refuse your customer after sales support on a genuine issue because of a matter of days, then you're not a company worth dealing with. I hate buying anything samsung to this day because of this.

          • +3

@MindGrenadius: Yes, I remember trying to deal with JB around 2014 and they were horrible to deal with. Now they’re probably the best at enforcing ACL (at least in my experience)

            • @giventofly: I agree! It's the only brick and mortar i visit for tech now. They have a solid break down of expectations vs price and time. I really appreciate the company having gone through this and set it out in black in white what their interpretation of the vague "reasonable time" is.

              https://support.jbhifi.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/360053005194…

            • @giventofly: JB was actually where I worked. Before then it was pretty clear cut (internally) that if it were a day over, sorry, too bad so sad. After that internal policy dramatically shifted and it was a very grey area albeit certainly erring more on the side of fix it.

What actually led to me leaving was that they were basically forcing us to lie about extended warranties to push them (they had aggressive store targets for extended warranties as they were such high margin add-ons) when they weren't needed. At times they were an OK product, but most of the time it wasn't needed (at least in the way they wanted us to push) due to the policy changes.

I piped up one too many times to the wrong people about not lying to customers and it was all downhill from there. Got all the bad shifts and essentially forced out of the door. Manager at the time not long after ironically got fired for fraud lol

    • They honoured my water damage claim 1 month after the warranty expired on my HERO 9 Black.

  • +1

Can get the gopro 11 with sub for $545 ($530 unidays)

Or the 11 with accessories pack and sub with free 32gb SD for $613 ($597 with unidays)

Pretty good deals if you need an action cam.

    • The 11 non-bundle deal with the subscription hack is $476…

      • -1

        $475.97 exact

        • +2

          Right… $545.96 minus the $69.99 subscription…

I'd be inclined to spend the extra for the 11 if your budget can stretch that far, a much better camera…

    • +1

Would you say it’s worth paying for the difference in specs? I saw the comparison between 9 and 10 and thought that was worth. Also looking to get into cinematic fpv

    • $633.07 for the 11 plus accessories pack and upgrade to 64gb SD, very tempting! Does anyone know how long this deal is on for? EDIT: "Available from Friday, 12/9/22 9‌:0‌0 a‌.‌m. PST and will continue until GoPro terminates the program in its sole discretion."

Showing estimated delivery as 19th Dec but not sure I believe that, would be nice to get it before Chrissy though.

  • -4

Cant i just use my phone???

    • +12

I wasn't able to make calls with my GoPro, you might have more luck than me.

    • +3

Goodluck strapping that phone to a motorbike helmet or taking it diving…

  • Purchased for my partner, though I note PayPal charge doesn't match up with cart charge (Paypal was less). Odd.
Will be keen to see what arrives.

    • Hmnnn… Interesting. If I may ask was the charge $309?

      • +1

from what I can see, it looks like I have paid for everything in the cart except for the subscription

    • +2

You won't be charged for the subscription straight away.. For the hack cancel Paypal automatic payments to Go Pro and then they won't be able to take the payment for the subscription…

  • +1

Why don’t you buy the DJI action camera for 188 the other day?

    • My thoughts exactly. Despite DJI has better (bigger) sensor (and all obvious advantages associated with larger sensor), the smaller size, better battery life, and, fantastic price, I suppose majority still prefers conventional design approach of GoPro (plus its own advantages - arguably better video processing, no heat issues, water proof out of the box etc).

      • +2

A bigger sensor doesn't mean it's better. The advantages you list for the gopro do make it seem better.

        • +1

lower cost and more availability of accessories and replacement parts if damaged are a big factor.

  • Big difference between the 7 and 9 black?

    • +1

From my understanding no, the next big jump is the 10/11 series

      7/9 are basically incremental updates.

5/6 to either is a huge jump.

      • Wasn’t the heat issues with some 8-9? In 4K mode?

        • All gopros have heat issues when stationary. The Gopro 11 can finally record permanently in 4k 60fps, but not in 120fps mode.

They are designed to have airflow over them.

  • -1

GoPro ships from Singapore, while it is a reputable brand, any issues you have to return it to Singapore: https://community.gopro.com/s/article/Warranty-Information

Also it does not qualify for TRS (in case you will be travelling and thinking about it), because their invoice does not have an ABN.

    • Are you sure, look up the top left, you "should" be able to claim the GST back…
      https://i.postimg.cc/Gp9G2RYH/2021-Gopro.jpg

And it's probably best to pay with Paypal so if there's any issues int he first 6 months you can use a Paypal dispute to force a refund…

      • For an Australian business, it's ABN is the GST registration number. For a foreign business authorised to collect GST, they have a GST registration number that is not an ABN.

TRS specifically requires an ABN on the invoice.

        • +1

That number comes up on an ABN search: https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?id=35131583413

          • @FLICKIT: Interesting, only just noticed that your invoice was issued by GoPro Inc, and that GST registration number is indeed also an ABN, which suggests that it is claimable.

Earlier invoices were issued by ModusLink Pte Ltd with a slightly different number, that one does not come up in ABN search.

Seems like they have changed the sales process. Thanks for pointing it out.

            • @browser: That invoice is from late 2021 when I purchased my 10…

    • "any issues you have to return it to Singapore".

This is complete garbage, by Australian Consumer Law. MSY's been slapped down for it a few times.

      • Gopro isn't an Aussie company so no ACL ;)

  • Bear in mind, despite the hype GoPros have pretty average reviews. My 7 black died and GoPro customer service was miserable

    https://www.productreview.com.au/c/digital-cameras/b/gopro

    • All the action cameras have their pros and cons though.

  • ooohh thanks for sharing op! definitely gonna be grabbing this one as I'm building a cinematic FPV

  • +2

Don’t forget to use a cc that doesn’t charge an international transaction fee.

  • GoPro has hit a plateau a few versions back, only incremental improvements since, and adding/removing things for the sake of a newer version.

That said it's still a solid and reliable action camera. But insta360 takes a lot more interesting footages.

    • +1

Every Gopro has been incremental, but its also yearly so skipping one generation means a lot more features.

Insta360 means a particular unprofessional FoV look (in my opinion) and a huge selfie stick is mandatory so its quite different to the footage that a gopro would produce.

      • Each to their own I guess, Insta360 has overheat issues, the videos are distorted due to super wide views, and takes a lot more time to edit. But it can be mounted without a selfie stick in motorsport applications, and still captures the main subject and surroundings.

Action camera is all about capturing the moment, than making production quality videos, so to me Insta360 is more appealing. But I already have a GoPro. :D

        • +1

The problem with the insta360 is that its very inferior when compared to a gopro in a standard mounted setup.

It might not seem like much, but compare the quality on a decent screen to the Gopro and its a huge difference. The Gopro can do 5.3k, 10bit, 180mbit bitrate video, as well as 4k 120fps.

The insta360 can only do 4k 30fps at 120mbit bitrate and also suffers a lot in low light.

Whats worse is that the 360 view is only 5.7k which is way too low, for double the view you need 8k so quality isn't reduced, as well as the downsides with the unrealistic looking FoV.

I really do like the Insta 360 though, I just like the X4 or X5 will probably be the sweet spot as the quality just isn't there yet.

  • Now des good del

  • Can someone confirm that I can pay with my credit card then cancel the subscription or does this have to be done through PayPal?

    • +1

Not sure if it worked using PayPal. i confirmed the order using PayPal then went back to gopro and cancelled the subscription , however i see that the payment for subscription has already been deducted from PayPal ( and to my credit card). So not sure even if the subscription is cancelled i will get refund for that first yearly payment. i tried to go to PayPal and cancel the subscription but its giving me errors.

      • So you mean they charged subscription fee straight away?

        • Yes looks like subscription fees have been charged straight away as it is reflecting on both my PayPal account and the credit card attached to PayPal account.
