This is the Cherry MX version, which retails more than the regular mechanical switches

  • Good for gaming.

  • +9

my experience with cheap/small brand keyboards that come with good switches: (years ago with some MX red keyboards, and recently with a TTC gold pink)

Most are quite bad in some ways:

    1. super plasticy base
    2. ABS keycap which will look super oily after few month of usage.
    3. bigger key (shift/enter/space) felt a lot more mushy than the average sized keys
    4. the switch can feel scratchy when pressed on a slight angle.
    5. inconsistency force pressing the keys
    • +4

From a gamer pov (with the 3yo brown version)
      1. Base is solid metal
      2. Still looks new
      3. Agree on the spacebar, the rest are fine - but I smash the spacebar anyway.
      4. Nope
      5. Nope

like the idea of the removable cover, should make cleaning easier ….

can't fault them for the price but do expect at least one of your keys to have inconsistent key presses. maybe you'll be lucky and it's a key you don't use much…it's really a lucky dip

    • I have had some luck with electronics cleaning spray to bring back keys that are inconsistent. I wouldn't trust them with my life (and be careful entering passwords) but it is something. I would hope the cherry switches beat the outemu for reliability.

      • This is what I used.

You want one that doesn't have oil. The can I have has lasted me for years. I bought it when I was into flying r/c aircraft and I haven't done that in maybe 7 or 8 years now..

      • yep, tried contact cleaner before and no joy. that said, i only blasted the switches from the top. i didn't bother opening up the keyboard but i suspect it's dodgy soldering.

        • Cleaning out all the muck, pressing down hard on the key and using contact cleaner brought back the number 4 key on my numpad and it seems reliable for now. This on a Kogan red outemu switch keyboard. It's different from the one in this deal.

The one in this deal uses software to configure whereas the one I revived uses key combinations to program. Both types have advantages and disadvantages so I ordered some of these to see how they'd compare. If I go through one a year it's still cheap.

  • Both boards on that listing list Outemu switches, which while not the worst thing ever, make these boards basically on par with a cheapie from Kmart and the like. Not really worth picking this up. Apologies if they updated the listings or something and it previously did say Cherry MX switches, but yeah, Cherry and Outemu switches really aren't comparable.

It still says Cherry MX for me using Kogan app

I won't recommend at all. The quality and durability…..should be cheaper.

  • +3

I’ve got this and can recommend it

I've gone through a few Kogan Mechanicals. They feel fine & perform ok, but they do seem to develop issues at the 6-12 month mark

    • +1

I've rage smashed my 3yo brown board and after picking some keys off the floor after a round of warzone it's still fine

    • i have had the same experience. no more

    • Do you still have it? Try cleaning it out and applying some of this to the switch after removing the keycap.

  • 11.99 shipping, sign:(

I am using my Kogan Cherry MX Brown bought in 2014. Not sure if it is the same nowdays.

    • A friend helped to place an order, with free shipping!!

  • Just got one, hopeful it is cherry as stated. I have first (free with my credit card) and a bit of credit backed up so it was only $23 delivered.

I have one of their non cherry keyboards and I'm quite happy with it. It's over 2 years old and no issues.

Thanks for the reminder, just submitted a warranty claim for a similar keyboard purchased from Kogan from earlier this year, Right Shift and A key gone faulty and pretty much don't work. Replaced with the Corsair K70 deal from earlier this week which isn't even in the same league.

I am still using Kogan one not sure what key it is.

  • Being cherry switched, does this mean the switches are removable?

    • +2

Depends on your definition of removable. I know very little about keyboards, but I assume what you mean by removable is the ability to hotswap switches. That is, remove and insert switches without any soldering simply by pulling out the switch and inserting a new one with compatible pins.

If that is the case, I do not believe this provides that feature.

I think generally whether a keyboard supports hotswapping switches or not is more of a function of the rest of the keyboard than the switches themselves. So from my understanding, you can have keyboards with cherry switches that can be hotswappable, and those using the same switches but are not hotswappable.

But then again, what do I know of keyboards.

      • Yeah, I bought a cheap mech keyboard awhile ago and the non-cherry switches are soldered to the board.
I was hoping this one might have swappable ones

        • +1

kogan boards aren't hot swappable. they're made to a price point.

        • Usually hotswappable keyboards are $100+

          • @cheng2008: Depends where you get them from and the overall quality of the product, but you can easily find a hotswap-capable board off AliExpress for ~$40.

    • +1

Cherry is just a brand that manufactures switches, switches themselves do not determine whether a keyboard will be hotswappable (Removable). The PCB's switch sockets determines if the switches can be removed or not. And lastly hotswappable means that switches can be removed/replaced easily by only a switch puller, whereas if it is not hotswappable you'd need to desolder and solder the switches to replace them.

Buy use for 3 - 6 months then get a refund when it inevitably breaks, repeat
ad nauseam. That's my Kogan mechanical keybaord experience, I dont regret it cause cheap but know what to expect.

  • Shipping kills it for me.
    $13
If I add two to cart, then shipping is $20!
    Rubbish!

  • +2

    Just received mine.
    TLDR; solid buy for $30.

    Cons:
    - Keyboard is super plasticky and is very light.
    - Keycaps feel like they will shine pretty quick.

    Pros:
    - Real cherry switches, which are a step up over the outemus and other cheap chinese switches that usually come in this price bracket.
    - The switches are consistent though quite scratchy (in other words, exactly how a cherry mx red feels)
    - Key rollover is good enough to never hinder you during use
    - RGB backlight is pretty ok.
    - Detachable USB-C cable (Corsair, Razer, and everyone else, take notes)

Considering the price, i'd say it's a solid buy but don't expect to wow keyboard enthusiasts with it.
Edit: after typing in this comment I realize the keycaps show fingerprints really easily. They also wipe off pretty easily though.
