you can check local store stock at the add cart section

      • Oooo thanks for the tip! Looks like they're in stock too! Only downside is that it's not USB 3.0.

Got excited. Then USB 2.0 :-(

could always just crack that baby open and put the HDD in a USB 3.0 or eSata enclosure or just directly connect it.

IMO, its a good time to wait for that new hard drive. Prices are really coming down fast, especially with SSD's. You'll be picking up a 4Tb+ drive in about 12 months time.

    • But if you're going to to that, may as well just buy an internal WD Green 3TB from MSY or something for $10 more.

At least that way your warranty is intact.

But you're right…. hard drive prices are finally falling. I'm looking to pick up a few 3TB drives but gunna wait a few more months if I can.

  • I got the 2TB version of this a year or so ago and have been very happy with it so far.
I do agree with the second part of Claggs's comment above though if you can wait.

  • How easy are these ones to crack open safely, and do they have a good drive for a htpc inside them?

    • About 50/50. There aren't any screws on the bottom so you'll have to pop the case, just run something around the inside of the bottom rim. There is a small risk of damaging the case doing it but it won't be much and it won't effect the HDD in any way either.
This is what the bottom looks like.

Is it a green drive with that dodgey head parking? I have 3 and i did this and they no longer lag after periods of non use, as well as longer life. It's a tool from WD that allows you to change the time of or remove the idle function.

why is this a bargain while lots of 3TB external drive(most USB 3.0) being around $150 or so?

    • Oh really… "lots" of 3TB drives that are USB3, available locally, and for $150?

Please share…. as I havent noticed your post telling us all here on OzBargain where such a deal is available from ;).

    • Since I could do with a new one, I'd really like to know as well.
If you can provide this information, that is.

      • there was just this http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/73422
for about a day before it expired.

I'm in the queue for when they re-stock, no promise what the price will be then, certainly a long way from "lots"
