Telstra 4G/5G Internet Data Plan for Mobile Broadband Devices 400GB/Month for $75/Month @ Telstra

150

I was looking for a mobile broadband plan as I won't have NBN for 1-2 months, and so require a temporary solutions to get decent internet. I stumbled on the 400GB Telstra plan with $10 off (normally 400GB for $85)

No lock-in contract.

You need a mobile broadband device as it works from a SIM card.

Currently from my location I get 227Mbps download and 59Mbps upload (but speeds will varies depending on your location)

I’m using JB data plan, 5G available, 400gb data $69/month, 24 months plan with $500 gift card.

    • I looked at JB's plans but I didn't want to be locked into a contract.

But yeah if you need 12 or 24 months of mobile internet then the JB plans are pretty good!

    • Looks like the current offer is only 200gb data, unless I have the wrong link?

It’s 200 now, not worth it

That $75 price from Telstra is only for 12 months, then it goes up to $85.

Belong's normal price for the same, on the same network, Telstra's, is $70/month. Its capped at 250 Mb/s on 5G and 180 Mb/s on 4G.

    • Good price but not the same network. Belong uses part of the Telstra network; in my experience you won't get the same speed or coverage as Telstra themselves. Boost is the only reseller that seems to provide the full network.

Telstra's retail network covers 99.5% of the Australian population. Its wholesale network covers 98.8%. You've got to be in a pretty remote part of Australia to be in that 0.7%.

You've got to be in a pretty remote part of Australia to be in that 0.7%.

Don't confuse remoteness with population density. All the above means is that if you're in a major city you're covered; go outside a major city (e.g. to many significant WA wheatbelt towns) and you're on your own, unless you're with Telstra. I learned this the hard way. Dalwallinu and Trayning are 2 examples.

          • @cobberboy: I have it on good authority that Telstra are upgrading the wholesale network in WA from 3G to 4G before 2024 so could be a little way off yet. Most other areas are basically the same if your on either retail or wholesale. Optus have better coverage in a lot of regional areas then Telstra and faster speed as well. Its generally only in really remote areas such as the middle of the bush where you notice a difference.
Telstra is generally better in remote areas.
But in highly populated areas Optus shines.
Telstra is slow and congested half the time.

Now where can i get a cheap NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 pro for this plan?

  • You should just get the 5G Home Internet plan, it's 1TB for the same price.

    • Not available at my address :(
Does it fall back to 4GX using Telstra's provided modem?

      • I had same issue - 5G Home Internet wasn't available for me in the area so you can't even appy for it.

Yes, and as per the other thread, just use an address near a tower and set the delivery address as yours.

5g home broadband 1 TB is better

    • I tried to get this but wasn't available in my area - though 5g via SIM was - confused how this is so

      • They want to limit the number of people using it per tower so they can claim a faster average speed compared to their competition

        • If you're not eligible for 5G home broadband at an address it is because there isn't sufficient backhaul, or capacity, to serve numerous 5G home broadband customers from that site, even if you have a great 5G signal. The 2 reasons for being ineligible are: 1 the site has never been released for home broadband or 2 it has been upgraded at some time but is now fully subscribed. Either way you have to wait for a future update. Optus and Vodafone have a miserly maximum speed cap on their 5G plans so not worth bothering with. I can't comment on Telstra as I also live at an ineligible address, which has never been available according to Telstra, and no timeframe available. Hopefully they don't go down the same path as O&V, would be a big mistake

  • Any ideas if you can just use a mobile phone with this?

    • Should be fine. It states you can bring your own tablet or mobile broadband device. Just click the deal and have a read.

    • Yes you can use it in a mobile phone. Can you hotspot from the phone? Most carriers are limiting the amount of data you can hotspot and the T&C don't specify so you should check. I doubt you would use this data plan in a mobile phone to make calls and SMS as the costs would soon mount up so just buy a 4G modem that can handle 200Mb/s or more and you'll be fine. Plug it into your wifi router or buy a wifi modem. A 5G wifi modem will cost significantly more obviously and not really worth it, the 4G speed should be more than adequate

  • Price may increase in July due to CPI.

    • JB Hi-fi deal, when available, $69/month for 400Gb for as long as you stay on it. I stayed on the $69/month with 300Gb until more data was available then just took out a new plan and cancelled the old one. I'll be on this plan until more data becomes available. You can also cancel your plan if the incentives are there. I got a free 5G wifi modem first time around and then $350 GC. Just have to keep it a year but I'll always want internet so no problem. First year cost was effectively around $300 after modem price taken into consideration, second year $500 after GC. NBN can't touch this, especially considering I'm getting over 400Mb/s

  • My NBN router and modem collectively use 22 watts, 22w x 24 hours= 528Wh, our house uses just under 6kWh per day,
so these 2 devices use almost 10% of our daily electricity use. I have a 4G (not 5G though) mobile modem, it only uses 2 watts.
Also you could take this Telstra mobile broadband modem with you on holidays, camping, hotels, or plugged into the cars cigarette lighter etc.
It's an interesting alternative to the NBN, though I wonder what the ping would be like, for gaming and other online activities?

  • Ping is fine on Mobile broadband generally get between 20 and 40 MS its a lot better then Skymuster and the like.
Sometimes the Telstra routing isn't fantastic to other overseas locations though depending on who the other provider has transit agreements with.
