Isn’t this the same price as Amazon?

      • +4

Can you use your perks there?

        • No, just wanted to clarify it’s the same model.
If you’ve still got perks great.

  • Thanks OP, Perks would have been gone in 2 days.

Found this article about the echo dots, wonder if they are trying to clear before killing off…

    https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/the-failure-of-amaz…

    • Might be the case

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/11/amazon-alexa-is-a-co… - basically they handed out the devices like candy but never actually found a way to monetise it. Now Amazon has a new CEO and Bezos is less involved, they'll probably kill off quite a few money burning projects to keep shareholders happy.

I really hope Prime video doesn't go too though, although I can't imagine how it possibly makes money.

      • Yeah agree, I love the perks of Prime membership.

    • Killing off meaning it'll stop working? i didnt read all of the article but didnt seem to mention this

      • I seem to still have Cortana in Windows 10. It's however not some thing which i ever use.

If they stop working can they be returned for refund under Australian Consumer Law?

        • -6

You mean the Australian Karens Law. “I paid $9, and all I got was a Bluetooth speaker!!??”

        • Amazon could rightfully argue that they didnt stop working, they simply stopped supporting an older tech product. The same way your phone gets updated for roughly 3-4 years before it'll no longer receive software updates. Works the same with any device thats connected to the internet. These things still needs servers to run at the end of the day and that all costs a tonne of money for next to no return on the whole Alexa lineup.
My thought is that the ACL wont be siding with consumers in this case as Amazon never sold these on the promise that they would be supported for life.

The original WSJ article suggests scaling back, not killing. Right now they’re losing billions, investing in robots, integrations and new functionality that no one uses, trying to find that killer usage that generates income.

Likely we’ll see less devices that cost more, rather than the old approach of trying to get a device into every home by basically giving them away.

Same discounted prices for past couple of years.
If they wanted to kill it off, I wouldn't have thought they'd manufacture and release the 5th Gen.
They've also done next to nothing to clear the bigger ticket items. I paid $179 for the Studio this time last year.

      • Unless the 5th gen is the last gen there will be.

    • I wouldn’t say that just based on this price: got a couple of these Echo Dots for $19 at different times in the past couple of years, so it’s not that unusual.

If the reports are true though, we may see a phase out of these older models, or maybe a lack of any new features being rolled out across the line. Axing Alexa entirely might be counterproductive and annoy too many customers.

      • They won’t kill Alexa. I mean, she wasn’t alive to begin with. She’ll be outsourced, and her name will change to Alexle, or possibly Gooxa. Either way, it will be harder to say

    • While Amazon didn't respond to Insider's questions about the health of its devices and voice-assistant business, Amazon's senior vice president for devices and services, David Limp, said in a statement, "We are as committed as ever to Echo and Alexa, and will continue to invest heavily in them."

I think this is directly as a result of wfh the past few years. Companies like Twitter have realised that 90% of tech employees are sitting at home doing not much at all. This is just a healthy refactoring towards employee accountability

Echo Show 5. Least favorite echo device.

Bugs galore including won’t dim automatically at night most nights, fades to black every few minutes. Doesn’t show alarm in night mode. Continuous adds for skills even though disabled.

Have had 4 and all are the same.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me four times…

      • Well it just ain't gonna happen

      • I cope with the bugs (was hopeful replacements would fix it) as I have no option. I am all in with Alexa.

    • My echo spot is holding well though

They price matched Office Works $18 for me today in Adelaide

  • These seem to be the the older models. The Echo Dot is now Gen 5 and the Amazon Eco is Gen 4. I think there are new commands in the newer versions, and of course better speakers and newer technology all round. The Echo Shiw 5 I think is still current as is the Echo Show 8. But the speakers have been updated.

  • Amazons 10 billion a year blackhole.

    • It’s a great tax deduction

  • Ordered it yesterday and got an email saying "sorry we will refund you in a few days since we oversold it - order canceled". Shame!
