  • Not being facetious, this is an honest question. What's the difference between an air fryer and an oven, other than size?

    • +8

      Heats up way faster

    • No. air fryer heat up fast is because the fan is big compare to its chamber.

      • +3

        So, heats up way faster

    • +8

An air fryer is a smaller fan-forced oven.
Because the chamber is much smaller in a AF (normally < 6L) it not only heats up faster, vs a conventional oven which normally requires 5-10 min heat up time
The heat is also disturbed more evenly
Also, the heat circulates better in a smaller round chamber

A proper wall oven also circulates the air properly and has even heat distribution - but you couldn't expect that from a landlord deluxe oven.

Airfryers also usually have a fair amount of (intentional) air leakage out the back - this reduces the air humidity inside, which can be different to normal ovens. To counterbalance that - a big oven with the same amount of food in it, just has more air to mix with the moisture coming off the food.

An airfryer usually has a lot more airflow, directly at the food. This also changes the way things cook a bit.

      • Thanks for response that makes sense.

    • Not much if you have a modern oven with a powerful fan. But for those who don't, the powerful fan in the air fryer helps it get food extra crispy

In addition to the other responses, if the question is why do people buy air fryers, one reason is the portability. If you are cooking something particularly smelly, you can bring it out of the house and cook it there. Also, if you are going out (friend's place, airbnb, parks with outlets, etc), then you can use it there as well. In summary, we use it because it is more convenient than a conventional oven (quicker, more even cook) and it gives us flexibility on the way we cook

      • Oh true. I bought a portable induction stovetop for this reason. Don't wanna stink up the house.

        • Yeah that's a good idea. I probably should get one as well as we only use the side burner of our grill but the flame is not as good as the normal stove. I don't think I can cook steak on it

I think Amazon is trying to match the kogan price.

    • +1

Thanks, it expired at Amazon but Kogan still got it at this price. :)

  • Can this be considered loosely as a air fryer and a George Foreman in one?

  • Can this fit a whole chook?

    • +2

      Only if it is butterflied.

      • Thanks!

Had one for about 4 months.. love it. It is quicker at air-frying than my old kogan cheapy and cooking steak with the thermometer makes it a set-and-forget experience

  • +4

Bit annoying about the non-stick, as mentioned in Amazon reviews that after a week the non-stick coating is chipping off. Shame there's no uncoated trays for it.

    • 30day returns.

    • +3

Sounds like the non-stick coating is of poor quality. I hate to think that some of it may end up in the food

  • It is all good until you are struggling with cleaning the sticky oil marks on the plates

  • Price has gone back up $352.70

  • back to 352

  • There is one left on Ebay for $240.

  • +1

Using it for about 7 months and everyone loves it - Air Fryer, Bake, Grill are commonly used. You will need to keep items for a shorter duration than recommended in cooking recepies as it heats up quick.
I had a Ninja blender free with my purchase which was also on sale many months ago for a similar price.

  • How would something like this compare to their AF300 air fryer? Are standalone air fryers typically better quality?

Want airfryer for the convenience/ease factor mostly.

  • +1

i purchased through Kogan at 229… got it for 219 with a trial of their Kogan First trial…. but they popped delivery on top (despite saying free delivery).

In the end, about 233 so not too bad.

i would prefer purchase from Amazon, but should be no reason for Kogan one not to be sufficent …. i hope
