I love M43 cameras, I own two of them, think they're amazing.

Don't buy one. The platform is dead, lenses are overpriced and hard to find, and other formats have eclipsed it technically.

    • Spot on, they’re fun.. but then so is the RX100 which has similar IQ to the most common kits.

    • What are the alternatives for something portable with good IQ?

      • Leica CL (APSC) is very compact and simple to use, but they don't make them anymore… you might find them on the secondhand market but they hold values well and usually sell as soon as someone post them.

      • +1

        The Fujifilm range is fantastic.

      • +2

        Ricoh GrIII
I prefer something bigger but still compact like the X-T30 (A tiny bit smaller than the E-M10 IV).
No Image stabilisation though, and you can technically get sharper photos with the E-M10.
I prefer the colour accuracy that the Fuji cameras provides without the need to edit RAWs. (Also APS-C sensor instead)
Quite a few photographers would argue that colour doesn’t really matter and that it can edited, but I’m not going to spend time editing 1000 raws for accuracy.

I’ve heard some good reviews about the Olympus platform from people who really care about sharper photos on a budget particularly with Burst and Nature photography.

Why you said lens are hard to find? How many lens do you need?

I not a pro user, I have 7-14F2.8, 12-40 F2.8, 75F1.8, 40-150F2.8. that's pretty much cover all. From landscape/ architectural to sports photos for my kids. I have been using M43 from the first EM1, like 10+ years. Every year they have new lens, they are high quality and not expensive.

      • +4

When was the last time you saw a bargain listed on here for an m43 lens?

Meanwhile there's a Sony lens every other week on sale.

If you already have like 3 grand worth of m43 lenses like you and I do, then sure it's great, but if I was starting over now it wouldn't be m43.

        • +1

I have not got around to list them yet but there are good deals on the M1 III and M5 III right now stack with the Olympus VISA card promotion, just started this month.

        • +1

Second hand prices of lenses are very reasonable. I bought several lenses 2nd hand costing from $150-$250 (kit zooms and primes). Brand new the prices are ok too, generally a bit cheaper than for other ILC systems, although it will vary a lot of course based on the quality / features of the lens.

        • +1

I don’t think you need to buy a brand new camera and lens for it to be considered a deal.
But I would agree with the fact that M43 cameras and Olympus cameras aren’t that popular in Australia compared to Asia and that they’re difficult to buy for a bargain new. Therefore there’s a significantly smaller second hand market.
But if you go to a second hand camera store in Hong Kong or FB marketplace in Asia then you can find some genuinely good deals for them.
M43 is alive and well particularly with outdoor photography.

        • +1

It must be admitted that the olympus camera is rarely mentioned, so it is rarely mentioned in ozbargain. But that doesn't mean the M4/3 platform is dead and you can't find good discounts, a few months ago I saw $6xx panasonic leica 12mm f/1.4 and $9xx panasonic G9 on Amazon au, and in the last six months I bought a panasonic 20mm f1.7 for $25x and a genuine new olympus hld-7 battery grip for $99.

    • +1

One of the big positives is the huge range of good, cheap lenses available

    • +6

The platform is dead, lenses are overpriced and hard to find

Wrong. M43 lenses are cheap and OM System are still coming out with new cameras and lenses. I have owned various brands of M43, APSC and full frame cameras over the years so well aware of their prices and pros/cons, 'just ordered a medium frame to experience (my recent deal). Horses for courses. When travelling or going on long walks, I often take my M1 and F2.8 zoom lenses.

    • +7

      Strong disagree.

M43 has its niche which is for people who want good to take shots with good glass in a small portable package. While other formats are technically better it wont be noticeable 95% of the time and the compact nature of M43 means you are more likely to take it with you.

OM systems recently said that the OM1 has outperformed their forecasts due to a strong interest from the bird-watching market who want smaller lenses and very good IS.

And if you say that the format is really dead then it's a great time to jump as plenty of lenses should be flooding the second-hand market, right?

    • You are right, I had EM5ii and EM1ii, and a range of "pro" lenses, 12-40/2.8, 40-150/2.8, 12-100/4, 25/1.2. But have since moved on from M43.

They were way ahead of the game 10 years ago with many niche features, but other mirrorless systems have caught up.

I think the form factor is still appealing to wildlife photographers,

  • +1

    Rather get a ZV-E10.

  • Just get a Ricoh GR.

  • -6

See this at the top of beginner-friendly still-focused travel camera picks in several roundups. Good in-body IBIS stabiliser? Also is 20.1 megapixels long in the tooth what with the iPhone 14 Max Pro having 48 megapixels now.

    • +8

The sensor size is more important than megapickles

  • FFS! Just bought a E-M5 Mark III during Black Friday sales.

    • +2

The E-M5 III has phase-detect autofocus, which is a huge performance improvement. Also weather sealing, mic port, high-res mode, 120fps video, fully articulating screen etc.

You got the much better camera.

      • +2

Oh absolutely! I'm just salty missing out on the $200 VISA card.

  • -2

Much between the IQ of these and the latest iPhones? Guessing maybe just the flexibility to change lenses?

    • +3

lol… IQ of iphone is shit compare to MFT

    • No idea why I got negged for asking a legitimate question. (I own an em5ii I'm not a hater)

      • -1

Unless you're a geek the phone is fine. The best camera is the one you have on you when you want to take a photo.

  • I choose a7c

  • Only worth $500 max for the entry/mid level M43 camera with a kit lens.

    • Probably right. Hard to get them at that price these days though. The mark 3 is probably still $800

    • +3

So much wrong with everything you said lol. I won’t feed the troll though.

    • +3

Even a first gen MFT camera like the GF1 can outperform any phone, its usually the photographer that's the problem not the camera.

    • Hilarious

    • +1

I could be wrong, but I think phone cameras rely on software, so optically it can never match an actual camera.

But I don't know why they can't put the same software/processor in cameras, possibly due to cost.

    • +1

I think phone cameras will struggle to take a decent milky way photos.

    • +1

You think AI beats physics? Ok.

      • -2

Google, just as a single example, takes multiple images and stacks/aligns/median merges them to increase signal to noise far above what an MFT sensors will acheive in a single exposure.

You can do what google are doing, but you'll have to manually do all the stack/align/merge in post and it won't be as good as Google's efforts will from a single button press.

Google (just to keep using them as an example) now have infallible white balance, no MFT camera does, skin tones alway look off and need adjustment in post, again.

Google's (again) stabilisation is statistically superior.

Either go FF sensor or iPhone/Pixel/similar.
I don't like phones for imaging, I use an FF and MF sensored camera, but just stating facts, you can be as butt hurt from these as you lile it ain't going to change what's what.

For the neggers, good luck carrying a much bigger, much more expensive and heavier dedicated camera plus laptop to acheive similar results with much more dicking around 👍

  • Not bad. Is it worth upgrading my camera body? Panasonic GX7 here.

    • +1

      keep ur gx7

EM10 mk4 is only nice with upgraded sensor v GX7.. but that GX7 is sexier looking especially if u own LEICA lenses :)

  • +4

Olympus user for over a decade here.
The relatively smaller sensor is the only limitation (i.e. narrower dynamic range).
Lenses, OIS and SFF are great.

Rumours of the demise of m4/3 are greatly exaggerated. IMHO, the future of photography is tending towards the software wizardry that is currently being employed in flagship smartphones. It's inevitable that much of this software will be migrated to real cameras next. Should this happens, imagine what an m4/3 sensor and its quality glass could do compared to the tiny sensors and lenses on smartphones.

Anyone else get confused to hell by Olympus model numbers?

    • +1

      1, 5 and 10?

      • Anyone else get confused to hell by Olympus model numbers?

Not really, probably the simplest of the camera makers. Canon similarly has R10, 7, 6, 5, and 3 in ascending order of capability.
Fujifilm models, try to figure it out LOL.

        • I'm a Fujifilm guy so know all the models like the back of my hand haha. Most of them are the same or very similar camera with different form factor though.

      • There's only 3 models?

  • Any recommendations if wanting to do a little astro pics, some daytime still and motion pics, may be not many videos.

Going through past deals and comments but haven’t found a winner yet.

    A7iii
    A7C
    Nikon Z6 ii
Or any other brand / models?

Any model would be upgrade I guess but I want to spend where I can future proof it if I want to get more out of it.

    FYI, I own Nikon D3100

    • I use Panasonic G9 for astro (milkyway and DSO)

    • Olympus e-m1 iii has a starry sky AF mode, and a built in ND filter mode for that creamy waterfall look during day time. You can get that with a 12-40 f2.8 pro lens kit for around $1859 with the current cash back promo. The camera used to RRP around $2650 for the body alone.
The G9 is good too (I used to own one) but upgraded to the E-M1 as it have a few more features I like.

      • Would it be a good one for day to day general pics and events as well?

        • If you meant the E-M1 III, yes it has one of the fastest AF in the M43 world, also known to be suitable for bird watching and sports (moving objects).

          • @Buy2Much: Great, one more question, would I be better off buying 12-100mm or 12-40mm and any additional lens?

            • @ggmm2013123: I would start with 12-40 first, F2.8 would allow you to take low lighting photos like indoors. Don’t invest in more lens till you are happy the M43 system suits your style and expectation. If you like taking portraits then add a prime like M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.2 PRO. For myself I got a Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95.

              • +1

@Buy2Much: Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95 and Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f/0.95 are my two favourite..

I need a Voigtlander Nokton 10.5mm f/0.95 to complete the set..
I have a Kowa Prominar MFT 12mm f/1.8 in the mean time which is ok..

            • @ggmm2013123: I believe the new 12-40 is very compact. I wasn't a fan of the others on my em5 due to the bulkiness.

  • Showing as $879 in some places but $1099 in my cart.

    • Thanks, I've marked as expired.

      • Thanks for posting. I might email them this link and ask them to consider extending it. I'm sure their sales shot up from it.

        • sure the discount will be back for the boxing day
