Buying Used - Serial Number on TV and Receipt

I'm potentially viewing a used TV today which was apparently purchased quite recently. It no longer has the box however. The seller says they have the receipt and the TV is still covered by a 3 year warranty and it happy to give me the receipt (purchased from JB Hi-Fi).

Is it possible to check if the TV serial number matches to the receipt or any other way of verifying the TV and receipt match (without a box) to see if the warranty is valid?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • You could ask for the serial number prior to and call the company to confirm with them directly and they'll be able to confirm when made and whether still under warranty. Serial numbers generally can indicate the date on manufacure as well, if you know how to read it.

    • In this case would you ask for the serial number from the TV and then call JB Hi FI to check its in warranty or check with the TV manufacturer? Thank you!

  • Hi,

It probably won't have the Serial Number of the TV on the Receipt.
That said, maybe the Seller has the Warranty Card, TV Manual and Remote are essential.
If the Warranty is Registered Online, can it be transferred to you?
Is the 3YR Warranty a JB In-House Extended Warranty and can it be transferred to you?

    • That's helpful thank you.
I will get the serial number and make some calls to JB Hi Fi and enquire I think.

I don't think they will help but worth a crack.

        • Fair enough, you're probably right.

It's second hand so pay second hand prices.

    Safest to assume no warranty.

If the tv fails try your luck with a claim and if it gets accepted then you are winning.

    Not all warranties are transferable.

    • It's a good price for second hand but as described above I'm still slightly hesitant. Will go visit in person and see if anything seems amiss.

2nd hand goods are buyer beware.

  • This is normal.

JB isn't going to check if a TV they previously sold is in warranty or not. They won't have a record of it.

If the seller can provide an original receipt that's good enough for me.

I'd just check that the TV manufacture date is within reason, i.e. less than one year before the sales date.

  • Unlike cars, generally tv warranties aren't transferrable - if the original purchaser's details are on the receipt you may be SOOL.

If not then you should be good.

If you're really desperate for a warranty buy brand new.

    • generally tv warranties aren't transferrable

Are you sure? In regards to the ACL the manufacturer is warranting the product will work/function (called the 'consumer guarantee' as per the ACCC) and therefore are not linked to whomever actually owns the item/presents the receipt to claim in case of fault.

If I pay cash to JB Hifi for a TV, they have no record of my details on the receipt therefore have no possible way to confirm or deny if someone else returns the same TV and the same receipt for a repair claim.

      • See here

consumer guarantees will not apply to one-off private sales between individuals where the seller does not obtain an income from regular selling activities.

This means that the ACL doesn't apply to the 'current owner' of the TV having to guarantee quality to the OP. Same as any other Facebook Marketplace sale or whatever with no receipts provided, yeah.

The OP has no recourse to the current seller if the TV fails.

It does not mean that the original manufacturer no longer has liability in regards to the ACL. Especially where correct proof of purchase is available. The OP can still present the receipt to JB in case of fault.

  • Did you buy the TV?

    • yes all went really well so far and when I checked with JB Hi Fi they said the warranty is valid. Thanks to everyone for their advice.

      • Thanks for the update. Enjoy your new TV.
