Need New Tyres - Size 235/60R18

MyCar apparently didn't have any Pirellis in the size I was after, I went to Bob Jane and these two fall into my budget:

  • Dunlop Grandtrek PT3 235/60R18 107V - $269

  • Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 001 235/60R18 107V - $300

These are buy 3 get 1 free.

Should I be leaning towards a particular tyre? Does anyone have experience with either two?

The car is a Nissan Murano

    Nissan Murano

Just get the cheapest. I'm gathering, by the mere fact that you drive a Murano, that there is no spirited driving.

Should be able to get Kuhmo in that size (crugen) for a lot cheaper. Around $190 each at a guess and they will be fine.

    • The tyres I mentioned above are buy 3 get 1 free. The Kumho tyres you mentioned are more like $270 for the size I'm after

      • What's your nearest city I'll try find them cheaper for you.

Disagree. Considering the only thing in contact with your 1-2 tonne vehicle going 110km/h is 4 small patches of rubber, buy the best you can afford.

E.g I use Michelin Pilot Sport 5 - exceptional tyre and great longevity.

They are night and day compared to a low tier inferior tyre and even on a car not doing spirited driving you can feel the difference.

      • Personally i found kumho last longer, but i got Michelin as they were slightly softer tyer and less road noise. Plus i got them off Costco, bit cheaper.

Longer lasting tyres often have worse grip

Yes it sucks when you have to buy new tyres again soon, but its better than buying a new car or being seriously injured because you lost grip

Just to clarify I meant get the cheapest of the two options mentioned.

I totally agree to never get those $90 Chinese death traps on your rims.

        • Ahh copy! Gotcha :)

  • get quote from Costco first. You may save some

    $

Cheaper tyres not in good brand does not last long.

    • +1

More $$$ on a tyer not necessarily make them last longer either, but their are other benefits, good handling in wet conditions, less tyer noise etc.
Its all about blance in $$ / price / type / safty /brand etc.

107V rated tyres? You're joking, right?

    Just go with a 103T or 102/3H.

    I recommend tyresales.com.au

That's just my default when I get tyres. You can usually get a free wheel alignment (~$70-$80) which is a cost you might not have considered with the above prices.

    • Pretty nice that its free, but you don't actually need a wheel alignment every time you get tyres.

You only need one if you change something in your suspension setup, or if your car noticeably needs one. (Uneven tyre wear or not driving straight)

Tyre places just try and upsell one every time to make some money

Actually, you should always get a W/A when purchasing new tyres. You will find most setups will be out.

        • You need to hit less gutters and potholes then.

          • +1

@MS Paint: It does NOT need a gutter OR potholes to put W/A out( fact) they move over time.(fact yet again)Any one who says you do not need a W/A when purchasing new tyres is kidding themselves.W/A,correct pressures & rotation(front to back & vice a versa is the recipe for long tyre life.) Seems you know little about tyre life.

      • I will never not get a wheel alignment with new tyres. Made that mistake when I was a cheap teenager and it was noticeably out of whack. Not all tyres will be the same, even the same make and model of tyre. They're not perfect and that's why wheel balancing is a thing too after changing tyres.

        • +1

Wheel balancing is important yes, but what does tyre size, or any of those details of a tyre, have to do with a wheel alignment?

Yeah if your car is out of whack sure, but if you know its not, its just a waste of money, If you know the signs its easy to tell when you need an alignment

          • @Boioioioi: I'm talking about the imperfections in the manufacturing process and using wheel balancing as an example of tyres all being different. If they were the same, we wouldn't need wheel balancing when getting new tyres. It's a game of millimetres.

            • +1

@rad000: Yeah I agree with you. My point is, what does a wheel alignment have to do with that? They dont even measure anything on the tyres when doing an alignment…

              • +1

@Boioioioi: Because the way the tyre contacts the ground can change. The suspension bushings would have been wearing for the life of that tyre, say 30,000kms. That's 30,000kms of wear in a position that will now be changed with a new tyre.

Going from zero tread to full tread will change the height your suspension is sitting by a few mm. That will change your suspension geometry.

                • @rad000: Your suspension geometry would not change by the change of the tyre tread though. It would move the entire car up.

If you put a coaster under a cup, it doesn't change the geoemetry of the cup. It moves the entire cup up

                  • -2

@Boioioioi: puts coaster under cup on desk

Holy crap. Look at that. Bloody amazing. 😉

                  • -2

@Boioioioi: The control arm angle will change, will it not?

                    • @rad000: Sorry I've accidentally negged you and I cant figure out how to undo it. Not negging just because we disagree!

I don't think it would though, because the raise in height happens unanimously. All the corners of your car going up would mean the angles would stay the same. It would only change if the wheels stayed in the same spot, but the body was raised. E.g. changing springs or something

@Boioioioi: Look, I'm obviously not articulate enough to say what I want to say, but I definitely believe there is a noticeable effect and I will continue to get wheel alignments with new tyres. I think it's also obvious we are both not mechanics so let's leave it to the experts.

Back to my original comment - free wheel alignments with tyresales.com.au!

                        • @rad000: Totally agree.I have had over sixty cars in my lifetime, always get a W/A when purchasing new tyres.I have alway got very good mileage out of my tyres.
