Possibly?
I finished the first one which was very good, and the story implied it was going to continue
The sequel is intended to get you up to speed on the story if you haven’t played the first game, but I see that opinions seem to differ on how successful it is.
I bought the bundle and played them sequentially, things in 2 made a lot more sense.
Is this as good as Half Life Alyx?
Nothing beats Alyx.
Thanks Doc!
purchased - thanks.
I played the first one, definitely the best graphics I've seen on the Quest 2. It was fun as well although I was hoping the playing time could be longer.Slightly off-topic but where's the best place to get hardware these days? Are there still supply issues? Asking for a friend.
Amazon, no supply issue as far as I know of, at least there wasn't when I bought mine a few months ago.
If you're talking about the Quest 2, anywhere It's normally sold (Amazon was giving $150 credit over BF).
There was never any supply issues really, just that sales were temporarily paused a while back.
Cool, thanks for the replies. It’s actually for work-related reasons, believe it or not. It seems VR meetings are all the rage these days and beats a webcam in Teams. I wanted to see (literally!) what all the fuss was about.
VR meeting? Working from Meta. Gimmick? Wonder if it will take off.
Microsoft have some cool-looking VR meeting tools that some of our staff have been trying. At present it really does smell like a gimmick, but I can see some potential as the technology matures.
@Chazzozz: Yeah, in time for the next pandemic.
With the current pandemic almost over, I doubt companies will want their staff working from home much longer.
Just picked up a Quest 2 on the weekend through Amazon promotion. Is Red Matter 2 one of the top VR must have experiences and do I need to play the first one? I got Beat Saber for free and bought les mills body combat, synth rider and Pistol Whip to start. I guess this would be something different.
I played around 1hr of red matter and got a bit bored. The puzzles aren't very challenging and it seems to mainly hold your hand throughout.
I would recommend looking into Wanderer if you want some vr puzzles and maybe The Room dark quest.
Half life Alyx is a must-play if you're into first person shooters even in the slightest. It is an experience!!
Yeh The Room is good. If you like actual puzzles, Puzzling Places is good too.
Agree with the above, especially Alyx and The Room.
I'll add A Fisherman's Tale as a puzzle game that you can only really experience in VR. It's short, but fun.
And if you're new to VR, make sure to try out the free experiences.
- The Lab is basically a series of VR experiments.
- Google Earth VR was quite fun to play around with during lockdown.
- Water Bears VR is some simple puzzling, but a few hours of fun.
Is google earth vr available on quest 2? Can't see it there … :/
@polarq: Oh, I should have been clearer. Those three I mentioned aren't on Oculus store, they're PC VR (like Alyx). You'll need a PC with VR-capable specs, then use Oculus Air Link.
Also, I was wrong about Water Bears VR being free…I got it for free, but must have been a limited time offer.
@TimeOrMoney: ah I see thanks
Highly recommend Super Hot as the first entrance into room-scale VR.
Recent reviews of super hot seem pretty negative, apparently they took out a bunch of the story?
They removed one scene where your character had to shoot themself in the head, that's all
@McFodder: Fair enough, I wasn't aware of how much content was removed. There are some incredibly passionate articles and reviews that don't consider it to be "one scene, that's all" however.
@Domingo: I forgot about another scene where you had to jump off a building, but all up it's maybe 15 seconds of content removed. Still a top tier VR game
@McFodder: The consensus seems to be less about the volume, and more about the importance of what was removed to the storyline.
Like removing the mouth from the Mona Lisa is just a small thing, but would largely change the effect of the artwork.
@Domingo: Part of the issue was that there was already an option to disable those scenes long before they were removed, and they could’ve just changed the default if they’d wanted. Also they continue selling the original non-VR SUPERHOT complete with suicide plot, and the “mind is software, bodies are disposable” tagline remains in the VR game. While those scenes were only a tiny part of the gameplay, they made up a majority of the VR version’s limited clues to the implications of the games’ Uncanny Valley-style setting.
While I disagree with removing scenes from old games without the purchaser’s permission, though, I still recommend SUPERHOT VR as one of the most innovative shooters I've played in years.
People who are salty that they removed 2 "killing yourself" scenes via patches (literally about 10 seconds of "gameplay"). There's actually pretty good reasons that they did it (look up suicide contagion if you're interested) and honestly I was pretty uncomfortable with those scenes.
Honestly though, nobody has ever really played superhot for the plot, it's all in the gameplay.
Incidentally, may i suggest vader immortal (for the dojo) and until you fall?
@Ezuku: Those scenes were edgy—heck, the whole plot tried really hard to be edgy—but ultimately, the innovative gameplay is what you're getting SUPERHOT for. Oh, and watching the funny fails when people play it for the first time!
@TimeOrMoney: Oh yes, and in the sequel (pancake) they decided to build in an 8 hour wait time bar to finish the game. The designer was rather protective over this until he finally relented and reduced the wait time to a mere 2.5 hours.
So acting like the developer has some sort of amazing vision that cannot be challenged or changed even by themselves seems a little strange. At least this one is for a good cause (protecting vulnerable people).
Just let me play it for the gameplay and skip the edgelord plot.
It’s possibly the top graphical experience on Quest 2 (not counting PCVR games). There’s a range of opinions on the other aspects of the game, from excellent to boring.
Try Moss. It's rather special. You won't believe me until you play it (try log in right now it's free to play for 12 hours, and it only takes 6 hours to finish and 8 hours to 100% it.. maybe it will even keep running after 12 hours if you don't turn the quest off?)
Do not buy Rez. It's awful.
Agree re: Moss.
The original Rez is a great game. Not sure about the VR version — I could imagine it causing motion sickness if nothing else. There’s a free trial available if anyone wants to see for themselves.
No motion sickness. Its just a short trip through dullsville
Highly recommend Walkabout Mini Golf. Chill game that you can play solo or with other people. There's a decent number of courses in the base game and then more DLC if you want more.
For new Quest-ers with PCVR capability, the Humble Bundle VR pack is still running with Superhot, Fisherman's Tale, I Expect You to Die and others.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/738056Cheers buddy still available I think for another 6 days.
o sh$% they have a sequal for red matter didnt' even know they did.
Cheers mate,
Been waiting for 40% off thisThis or RE4VR? I like Half Life Alyx very much.
This is a puzzle/adventure game with combat as kind of an afterthought. RE4VR has more action-based gameplay and is significantly longer with more content if that matters to you.
Red Matter 2 has better visuals and more designed-for-VR mechanics, though they did a better job with the RE4 port than most VR ports.
Also check out Saints & Sinners if you haven’t already.
The only Half Life Alyx I could find its on a Steam 60% of sale, is this the one people recommend playing? I have the Oculus Quest 2 and would love to try Half-Life out, still a little new to it, can we play our Steam Library?
You need a capable mid-tier gaming PC + Virtual Desktop Quest app if you want ease of access and to play via airlink(wireless)
Also possible to play via the free Oculus Link (wired) or Air Link (wireless) rather than Virtual Desktop, but Virtual Desktop has advantages.
I'm in luck, the gaming rig I built for CP2077 release is probably now a mid-tier :)
Gaming rig has an AMD 3900X, RTX2080 Super, and 64GB RAM. The media PC is newer but it's only got a AMD 5600, RTX3060, 32GB RAM.
I can find 2 Virtual Desktop apps, one on the Oculus site and the other on Steam, does it matter which I use?
The Steam one will only work with Rift so be sure to get the one from Oculus store (purchase via Canadian VPN to get it a little cheaper (CA$19.99 around AU$22). Don't need VPN to use)
There's also the free ALVR which I haven't tried but heard is working quite well these days though will require setting up a developer account so you can sideload the app.
As mentioned above Oculus has its own Air Link now so could always give that a try first
@bamzero: Thanks mate, appreciate the advice.
@bamzero: I went through the CA store using a VPN however I used the quick pay system thru paypal and the damn thing charged me in USD, my own fault for rushing, USD20 ended up about AUD32.
Have been using the Air Link as I've only just worked out that we must download Virtual Desktop from the Dev's website once purchased, Air Link actually has a very good connection and tons of free stuff, am messing with all my games in Steam while waiting for Half Life Alyx to download, will try Virtual Desktop soon.
Though I bought my Quest 2 Xmas 2021 I got a game called Beat Sabre free through some deal they're running atm, buy a VR set now and get some free stuff, seems it takes device registration as the purchase date.
Tested the Quest 2 on both my machines, runs very well. Overall I wanted to thank everyone who posted here as it gave me the push I needed to break out the VR unit and do some solid testing while the kids spent some of their 50/50 time with my ex-wife.@Ebany: Bugger. If you can be bothered and it's still within the timeframe, Oculus store refund policy is 14 days if used less than 2 hours so you might be able to undo it. You'll lose access to the app while you wait for the refund though, not sure how long it takes or if you can repurchase while waiting.
Double check what price it's showing via VPN too. I had a look and although was connected to a Canadian endpoint (Montreal in Windscribe) it was showing US$ on the button (and the confirmation page doesn't specify which currency.) Changed to Vancouver and got CA$ on the button and confirms C$ on the confirmation page.
@bamzero: I'll give this a go as I've not used Virtual Desktop yet, just Air Link and Steam VR. Must say I'm addicted, just discovered the YouTube VR …… unbelievable!
This is a fantastic game for anyone fence sitting, the graphics and game art are phenomenal (considering you're on a wireless standalone VR headset), and the lighting is outstanding. Definitely a bargain at this price. Is it the most challenging & complex game? No, but the story is terrific and the experience really immersive (and creepy too, on occasion). My favourite Q2 game thus far.
~$24 if you buy it from the Canadian Store (vpn required)
Do I need to play the first one?
