There are multiple offers on various gift cards in the latest BIG W catalogue, and I’m having a hard time writing up a deal title that will work…

Please note that variable denominations appear to be excluded, and promotional periods vary between different gift cards.

Gift Card Discount/Earn Rate Applicable Denominations Purchase Limit Promotional Period
Roblox 10% off $10, $25 N/A 01 Dec - 07 Dec
Uber 20x EDR points $50 10 per member 01 Dec - 07 Dec
Activ Visa Gaming 10x EDR points $50 3 per member 01 Dec - 07 Dec
Activ Visa Prepaid (Green) 10x EDR points $50, $100, $200 3 per member 01 Dec - 07 Dec
Apple 20x EDR points $30, $50, $100, $200 10 per member 08 Dec - 14 Dec

For anyone wondering, the Everyday Rewards bonus points offers are equivalent to:

  • 10% of the Uber and Apple gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Everyday Rewards points, and

  • 5% of the Activ gift card’s face value returned to you in the form of Everyday Rewards points.1

The Activ Visa gift cards also have a $5.95 purchase fee (for the $50 and $100 denominations) or a $7.95 purchase fee (for the $200 denomination). The $200 Activ Visa Prepaid (Green) gift card is the pick of the bunch out of the Activ Visa gift cards in this offer, as the value of the bonus points you will earn through this promotion will actually be greater than the purchase fee.

Additional notes

  • This deal requires an Everyday Rewards account (except for the Roblox gift cards). If you do not have an Everyday Rewards account, use this link from Woolworths or this link from BIG W to get 1,500 bonus points as a sign-up bonus. The sign-up bonus points can take up to 30 business days to be credited to your account.

  • As a reminder, 2,000 Everyday Rewards points is equivalent to:

  • $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars, or
  • 1,000 Qantas points.
  • There have been at least one previous report that the 10 gift cards per member limit is not enforced if you go to a different BIG W store and purchase different denominations of gift cards.

If you have a question regarding this gift card deal, check out the FAQs.

  1. The 10% calculation assumes you opt to redeem your Everyday Rewards points for Everyday Rewards Dollars (either through Money Off Shopping or Bank For Christmas).

  • Thanks wookimonster. I searched the FAQ but couldn't find the answer: are there restrictions on where the Activ Visa (Green) gift card can be used? Akin to the recent ATO block with the Coles MasterCards

    • +1

Well I guess we'll find out soon but here is what the website says…..

Where can my Activ™ Prepaid Gift card be used?
Activ™ Gift Cards can be used where Visa prepaid gift cards are accepted in-store and online. Please note that some merchants may choose not to accept prepaid gift cards, this includes both online and in-store merchants. This is the right of the merchant to make the choice about which cards they do and do not accept. Some online merchants that require 3D Secure verification (3DS) will not process the transaction as Visa prepaid gift cards do not support 3DS.

    • +1

You cannot use Activ Visa gift cards to send payments to the ATO. The gift card issuer has blocked it.

You cannot use Activ Visa gift cards at Woolworths to purchase the following gift cards, as this is blocked by Woolworths themselves:

      • Activ Visa gift cards
      • The Perfect EFTPOS gift card
      • OnlyONE Visa gift card
      • Westfield EFTPOS gift card (possibly - I’m not entirely sure, but other prepaid gift cards sold at Woolworths cannot be used to purchase Westfield EFTPOS gift cards)

I’m not sure as to whether BIG W applies the same restrictions as Woolworths re: the usage of Activ Visa gift cards, as I have not had much of an excuse to test it out.

      • Woolworths I also had issues purchasing ultimate gift cards (the same brand as Activ), also at aldi.

        • I had no issues using Activ Visa gift cards to purchase Ultimate gift cards at BIG W and Woolworths last week. What kind of issues did you have?

I wouldn’t know about ALDI, because I didn't bother checking ALDI during their last gift card deal…

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Woolworths said payment not allowed or something, same error as when you try to purchase visa ones

Aldi said declined by issuer even though I was buying $300 with a $500 card

      • Wasn't clear on this via the FAQ, but can Activ Visa cards be used at BigW and/or Woolies to purchase Apple GCs? Wondering if the Apple GC bonus points can effectively be stacked with the Activ Visa bonus points? Apologies if this has been covered previously.

        • +2

Probably? This is something I have not tested before myself.

I would normally say it would be fine to use Activ Visa gift cards to purchase Apple gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W, as Woolworths and BIG W only restrict you from using cash-equivalent gift cards sold in their stores (e.g. Activ Visa, Perfect EFTPOS) to purchase cash-equivalent gift cards sold in their stores (e.g. Activ Visa, Perfect EFTPOS). However, considering there is a recent report stating that you apparently cannot use Activ Visa to purchase an Ultimate gift card at Woolworths now, I’m not sure whether Woolworths or BIG W have made it so you cannot use an Activ Visa gift card to purchase any gift card sold in their stores now.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks mate, appreciate the reply. I know you're knowledge is always in demand on these sorts of deals :-)

    • Since when has the ATO stopped accepting the Coles MasterCard? I put through payments during and after the last 10% off sale and they all went through fine

      • +3

It was blocked on November 2, but it was reversed after an OzBargainer complained to AFCA.

        • +1

Thanks! Glad to know it still works then :)

          • @tightdesibanda: … but there is nothing stopping the ATO from being blocked again!

            • @WookieMonster: If the prepaid card issuers blocked their cards to pay ATO (or any merchants) it may be in breach of the wordings in their T&C. It is because most (or all) have the T&C something like 'The merchant has the right to accept or refuse the prepaid cards' .

If the issuer elected to block the card to pay ATO, then it is not the ATO's decision to block the card. The T&C should state 'it is issuer's right of refusal to pay ATO'

$5.95 and $7.95 purchase fee is ridiculous.

    • +4

      So you'd pay $207.95 for a total value of $210, i.e. a saving of 0.9762% ?

Much worse than previous colesmastercard deals.

  • -1

coles do 20x points promos for their MasterCards every now and then, wouldn't that be a better deal?
although these are better in that you can add them to your Apple/Google wallet.

    • Yes if it's on

  • oooh thanks for sharing op!

  • Any idea if Activ Visa Prepaid can be used on Shopback, giftcards.com.au and Woolies gift card website to buy gift cards?

Some prepaid Visa / master gets declined even if you add to PayPal for gift card payment

  • Is it 10x on activ visa load including fee or on load amount only?

    • Load amount only, and it is only applicable for $50, $100 and $200 denominations.

  • What do the discount rates work out to be?

  • I have 2 questions about the payment in Big W. Is the 10% discount code from everyday extra still valid? Can Big W gift cards or wish gift cards be purchased at Big W gift cards?

  • Is Roblox free? What payments are required for Roblox?

    • It's free to play mostly, but it has skins/costumes and other things you can buy

  • +2

Don't forget to stack with Citibank 5% cashback:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734658

    • Good idea, actually makes the deal appealing.

  • +2

So I understand this to be a profit of $2.05 per $200 VISA Green gift card bought? I wonder if the total profit ($6) will be worth the time to find a card in store and end up being dissapointed with OOS.

  • -1

Btw, isn't the new catalogue supposed to to start from Wednesday?

    • BIG W catalogues (including the one I sourced these gift card offers from) usually start on Thursdays, not Wednesdays.

  • Where are the Roblox details? I don't see it on the link?

    • The right-hand side of page 33

      • +1

Just seen the discount only applies between 1 Dec to 7 Dec only. (as ^ symbol is being shown next to Roblox card and the text in bottom)

  • lol $10 points back on $200 card plus $7.95 card fee = 1% discount

  • +1

Easy way to always get 10% off any Apple products. I always keep $2k loaded in my Apple account balance from these deals.

    • +1

I used to think like you but given current interest rates/opportunity cost of cash, unless you plan to buy from Apple Store (or EPP/Edu store) in the next few months (such as for a launch device which will have limited availability and no discounts) then you need to consider whether it's worthwhile.

      • +1

Yes things have changed recently in that regard, you definitely need to do the sums to see if its still worth keeping an account balance ready. I'm an Apple tragic though so it works out for me.

  • It is ashamed that the denomination for roblox is so low, only $10 and $25… hope they have multiple in stock…

    • +1

Might be best to just call Officeworks on 1300 633 423 tomorrow to price match over the phone and save a further 5%, that way you don't have to worry about trying to find them in Big W and also save some more.

You just need to say that it's in the Big W catalogue (page 33) at 10% off and they'll price beat by 5% on top of that for a total of 14.5% off.

      • Thanks mate. Got some from ow store this morning. Max is 5.

  • Do we have to purchase in store? I cant find a way to purchase online.

    • +1

Yes, this deal is instore only.

  • Please note that variable denominations appear to be excluded

    FML.

Zero points on an Uber variable.

  • It looks like apple GC related ERC bonus point is run almost every month. But coles flybuys bonus point is every 3 months? I am not super keen on this as i read so much about people having to chase up the point or points got stolen. Is it just a small number of people having issue? i bought some apple GCs through Coles last time.

  • Sadly, I think I might live near one of the worst Big W stores (Cumberland Park, SA) in the country. Second and last time I try to buy any Apple Gift Cards from them during the EDR bonus period. Apologies in advance for this lengthy post, however I feel a need to vent.

First time I tried to purchase from them (early this year), the checkout staff member and her supervisor were adamant that the cards did not attract any EDR bonus at that time. They were so convincing that I went away without buying any, only to later find that I'd read OzBargain correctly, and the bonus did apply.

This time, the staff (different ones) were again adamant that there was no current EDR bonus. Again, they had no printed catalogues to reference. They went on to advise that the EDR points would in any case be redeemable only in Big W. After much persuading from me, the supervisor checked out the catalogue on her mobile phone, and accepted that the special was indeed current, however she commented (in their defence) that none of them had any time to read the catalogues or keep up with the promotions (!!!). They had no idea whether or not the variable value Apple Gift Cards were included, so we agreed to stick with the $200 cards (I was wanting to purchase several thousand dollars worth). Although we agreed that we would do it as an initial ten cards in one transaction, and then a final five cards in another, the checkout operator then insisted that she wanted to do it as 7 x cards, and then 8 x cards (wtf?). At this point the supervisor stepped back in to advise that, actually, they could process a total of only $500 worth of cards without approval from a 'manager'. I said fine, call a manager over. However, the supervisor didn't want to / wouldn't do that. The checkout operator then volunteered that she would do 2 x $200 cards per transaction, to which the supervisor agreed. So … 15 minutes have passed, and the first 2 x $200 cards are rung up. The checkout operator insists on stapling each printed receipt to each related Apple Gift Card. Another 2 x $200 cards are rung up. Then … my debit card declines the third transaction. Plenty of money in the account, and the card worked fine in the next shop, so - seemingly - some algorithm at the bank decided multiple transaction for the same amount in a short space of time was suspicious.

So … after some 20+ minutes I got $800 worth of Apple Gift cards - only about 25% of what I wanted.

During the EDR promotions at Woolworths Supermarkets, I have never had any similar problems at any of their various stores that I have used at those times. The Woolworths staff have been matter-of-fact, quick, efficient.

I've read that there are clouds hanging over the future of Big W in Australia. I can well understand why, given my experiences. Hopefully, never entering a Big W store again.

    • Whether or not they attract bonus EDR points is none of their concern. You could have been getting Apple Gift Cards outside of the promotion period. That shouldn't have been a reason to stop you. It's not like you can't buy them unless there's a deal. Although just from reading it I'm not sure if they actually stopped you from getting any?

Their defence about not keeping up to date with promotions is rather ridiculous; as they are or should be the first point of contact if a customer isn't sure if a product is having a deal or not.

If you are adamant that the deal is on which it is in this case, if I were you I wouldn't waste my time going back and forth with them over whether they are on sale, just get them, however many are allowed at that particular store (this is subject to store policy though and I think one store may let you get 5 the other 10, for example, irrespective of the limit stated in the catalogue which is frustrating). I mean, you were referring to the catalogue, and they ended up just doing the same thing anyway, so the catalogue (on whether or not there's a deal) is the final say. Deal with head office if needed later. What I'm trying to say is I'd rather trust the catalogue than a bunch of staff which don't know anything and ended up reading the same catalogue anyway.

I guess it's a but unfortunate in the sense that with these bonus EDR and bonus Flybuys points deals, there's no way to know on the spot if you're actually getting the deal. With actual 10/15% off gift card deals, you could just ask them to scan one through to see if the discount comes up. Even with EDR points deals you either wait for Woolworths to credit the EDR points to you usually rather instantly, having said that I had to chase mine up (fixed value Apple Gift Cards) over the phone with Woolworths last time. Not sure about how Big W does it, I suppose it's also supposed to be instant? Flybuys points as you may know are credited the next business day.

      • I found in the recent Woolies promo that each time I went to a Woolies, it showed the bonus points on the screen facing the customer once you scanned your EDR card. This assuaged my concerns greatly. I also had plenty of time to read the screen whilst waiting for the printer to finish printing all the confirmations :)

        • did u have to chase up the points? how many days does it take for u to see it being credited?

          • @koala123: instantaneous each time… within a couple of minutes of leaving store I already saw it in my Woolies EDR app, and then converted to QFF the next day.

            • +1

@jace88: Good to know…might take the chance this time given that there is no flybuys promo atm.

  • Does anyone know whether the 20-500 apple gift card type works for the 20X points if I load $200? Or is it just the regular denominations listed?

    • just the denominations. I got the $200…and @jace88 i was relieved to know that my points shown up soon after i left the store!

      • Thank you! That’s good what a relief
