So you've seen Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite, maybe dabbled in Squid Game and are thinking to yourself:
"Hmm… This sure is different to Marvel and the 'hero's journey' narrative I've been conditioned into thinking is the fundamental rule of TV and cinema. I am curious to watch more films from the great nation of South Korea to expand my cinematic horizons!"

We've all been there!

THIS is the deal for you and the place to start!

Park Chan-Wook's 2003 masterpiece 'Oldboy' put Korean Cinema on the map and paved the way for Parasite to win the nation's first Oscar 16 years later.

While you're at it, you may notice this collection is included in Amazon UK's 'Buy 2, Save 11%' promotion.

Why not bundle it with the Bong Joon-Ho Collection featuring:

  • Barking Dogs Never Bite
  • Memories of Murder
  • The Host
  • Mother
  • Snowpiercer
  • Parasite
  • Parasite (Black & White)

    Good write up.

      Thanks, I try

  • +7

Oldboy is in my top five favourite movies really love it

    • +2

      It's a masterpiece.
      Have you seen Handmaiden? ✂️👀

    • +2

Still think about Oldboy and it's ending all these years. What a fantastic movie.

  • +3

Great price for an Arrow boxset

    • I was stoked when I got it for ~$50 around February.

Until now it's been somewhat consistently around $70+

  • +2

Excellent deal, loved Oldboy and Lady Vengeance (didn't like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance though)

The Handmaiden is also a gem from Park Chan-Wook

    • +1

I loved Sympathy because it reminded me about how shit life is ❤️

It's also a great conversation piece when discussing the bleakest films of all time!

  • +4

Oldboy is a all time top ten fave, potentially #1. EPIC revenge film.

    • +2

If you're into vengeance films (perhaps outside of this boxset) I'd suggest I Saw The Devil if you've not already seen it.

      • +1

Second this. Great film. Introduced this and OldBoy to wife when we started dating and she thought I was a bit nuts cause one was a mindfk and the other was too with some crazy good violence thrown in the mix

        • +1

That was a pretty bold move. But she stuck around, so it must have paid off!

          • @Faro: She trusted my taste in movies after I introduced her Pixar’s Wall-E lol. Then she wasn’t so sure after those Korean ones.

I’m back in the good books with some old gems. Meet Joe Black, Bicentennial Man and some other random ones. Think it was Legend of the Fall.

      • Great film, tough journey

  • +1

+1 for the write up! Any recommendations on which films to start with after watching (and loving) Parasite and The Host? Am little concerned that Oldboy might be a little too extreme based on the reviews.

    • +1

      Deliver Us from Evil.

    • +2

My individual journey was something like:
      Parasite
      Oldboy
      Memories of Murder
      Lady Vengeance
      The Host
      I Saw The Devil
      Etc.

If you loved the Host and Parasite I'd say you'll be safe with any Bong Joon-Ho film (Barking Dogs is the only I wouldn't immediately recommend. Just kinda weak in comparison to his other stuff).

In terms of Park Chan-Wook, you'll probably find more enjoyment in The Handmaiden, JSA or Decision to Leave (might still be in select cinemas currently).

In terms of other Korean films I can also recommend:
      Train To Busan
      Burning
      The Age of Shadows

If you're not keen on extreme, then avoid:
      I Saw The Devil
      Sympathy For Mr Vengeance
      The Wailing
      The Yellow Sea
      Bedevilled

I personally find that Oldboy is just such a masterpiece that I'd recommend at least trying it to see how you go with it. It is more extreme than your average western film and I do personally know some people who had a bit of a shaky experience with it, however.

      • +1

        Good recommendations.
Oldboy has became such a classic, so the extreme part has been forgiven is some way, I reckon.
Snowpiercer has that wtf moment as well.
Train to Busan is bit over-rated and Burning is definitely under-rated.

        • I haven't seen a huge amount of them, but Train To Busan is definitely my favourite Zombie movie I've seen. It's just a lot of fun imo

          • @Faro: can't argue with you there that it's a great zombie movie.

      • +1

Really appreciate the detailed and informative response! Glad that I'm safe with the other Bong Joon-Ho films. I'd heard so much about Park Chan-Wook that I figured I should start with at least one of his films. Might start with your recommendations and work up to Oldboy! Thank you!

      • I would 100% recommend A Bittersweet Life. I nearly like it more than Oldboy. Perfect Korean revenge film.

        • I quite enjoyed Bittersweet Life, but I understand it may be off-putting for some. A lot of Kim Jee-Woon's films veer towards silly over realistic in certain circumstances which can break immersion

    • +1

Oldboy is a little too extreme IMO. It's a masterfully crafted film but the ending is beyond disturbed - and without wanting to give too much away - not simply because of what's happened.

I'd stick with Bong for now, Memories of Murder, Mother, and Snowpiercer are all very good.

      • Hahaha, appreciate the heads up. Plenty of stuff to go through before considering Oldboy then.

    • +2

Try dabbling in some Japanese cinema too. Takashi Miike's Audition is really good. And Akira Kurosawa's films are legendary if you can handle some black and white.

      • +1

Thanks, have heard a lot about Kurosawa but not actually watched any of his films. Will put them on the list!

  • +1

Park's latest movie 'Decision to Leave' has been getting good reviews and apparently quite different to his previous movies.
'The Wailing' is another good korean movie if you don't mind bit of horror.

    • +2

Quite liked Decision To Leave. Saw it in cinema a month or so ago.

It is much more reserved than his previous stuff. Romantic detective suspense. Like Hitchcock stuff.

  • Fantastic revenge films with fantastic sound tracks. Oldboy had such a profound effect on me.

  • +2

    Upvote for the great description

    • +1

      Upvote for the supportive comment

  • Surprised no one has mentioned 2008's."The Chaser". Na Hong-Jin was the director, only a 2.6M budget according to Wikipedia which is also surprising

    • +1

I was gonna mention it in my long post. It just isn't the easiest to get a hold of (legally) in Australia. I found an old (somehow still sealed) DVD on eBay a couple months ago, but there's no easily accessible blu ray which is a shame.

Didn't know if it would be considered on the upper or middling part of the extreme spectrum 🤔

      • +1

Wow, just checked and there's no streamers in Australian and it would appear it's not been released on bluray. I guess I'm going to have to go the "alternate" route to getting this movie.

Cursory check says there are bluray rips available.

        • Oh and there's also this option

          • @Faro: 360p only

            • @Jackson: Didn't realise. There was a 720p option a couple months ago. I'll see if I can find it..

            • @Jackson: Must have been removed. However there are versions of My Sassy Girl, 3-Iron, Spring Summer Autumn Winter and Spring, and The Housemaid on YouTube with English subs

    • Na Hong-jin also directed The Yellow Sea & The Wailing.

  • Some great recommendations so far.
Most of these have been mentioned but you can't go wrong exploring the following directors and their films:
    - Park Chan-wook
    - Bong Joon-ho
    - Kim Jee-woon
    - Na Hong-jin
    - Yeon Sang-ho

    • +1

I haven't brought it up yet, but Tale of Two Sisters from Kim Jee-Woon is pretty top-tier

      • +2

Fun fact: Tale of two sisters, Old Boy, and memories of murder were all release in the same year (2003, almost 20 years ago)

        • +1

The USA was no slouch in 2003 either. That's when Tommy Wiseau's The Room dropped

          • @Faro: haha. only saw james franco version of it.

      • Yeah man, classics all over the place in this thread.

    • +3

You should add Lee Chang-dong to the list.

Oasis and peppermint candy are painfully beautiful to watch but never again

  • +1

Lady Vengeance was partially shot in Cooma, NSW

    • Wow that's awesome.

  • Whoever really thinks that "Marvel is the fundamental rule of cinema" and is older than 12, deserves to be excluded from society. Change my mind.

    • I often use Marvel as a low-hanging-fruit joke when talking about movies (mostly as an extension on the Scorecard comments a few years ago).

Even if your comment is a joke, the fact you put the whole "change my mind" thing at the end of your statement is a little… Uh… Cringey?
