Basic Laptop Recommendations - Budget $400

Laptop recommendations for around the $400 +/- $200 mark?

My laptop broke yesterday, I only use it for zoom calls and browsing the internet. I don't game so don't need anything like that but definitely need to be able to install Word and have more than 4gb RAM, in case i start studying again. I tend to fill up the download folder with files but that's really it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Considered a tablet instead for that use and budget?

Either a tablet or a ChromeBook sounds ideal for this kind of price / use scenario and run office 365 without problems.
If you are happy to go used then you can get something like an Thinkpad X1 with an 8th gen intel quad core for about the $400 mark on eBay.
The biggest things to look out for with anything new in this price range is display (1366 panels still curse this segment!) and/or really terrible CPU / RAM configs.

      • +1 for Chromebook if you are happy to run 365 in a browser. (Microsoft block you from running the native android versions of their apps on a chromebook because evil megacorps are evil.)

You will get better overall hardware quality (keyboard, screen, speakers) than a windows laptop at a similar price point.

I would look at a refurb for that price range, not many great options out there if you buy brand new. Fuse Tech AU and some other reps commonly post deals on here, wait around for a post or check their stores.

  • If you are on a budget would you consider a secondhand/refurbished one?
There are a few sites around that do them I purchased one 2 years ago, had a very small dent on 1 side but working strong to today not slowing down and my wife has like 30 tabs open at one time.
My work is selling internally old laptops I7 / 8gb ram / 128gb ssd for $150 for an example, yes a couple of years old now but for what you would use it for would go strong for a few more years easy.

Personally would go for a slightly older one with an I5 or I7 processor instead of a newer $400-$600 one with an I3.

    • Agree, dodge the i3 processor. Even for "basic use" I wouldn't go below i5 (or AMD equivalent).
