Please Recommend Me a Washing Machine (and Maybe a Dryer Too)

Hi Ozbargain, I'm in the market for a washing machine and looking at options is giving me major choice anxiety. We are a household of 2 adults and a cat and I'm guessing that we maybe need something 7-8 kg. My partner is a tradie ands gets filthy and the cat is a cat and puts fur everywhere. I mostly want something that will get tradie clothes clean and that is big enough to wash our couch cover so I don't need to take it to the laundromat. Being gentle on delicates is a plus, but I'm happy to hand wash some things.

I'd also like a dryer at some point since Melbourne weather is unpredictable and I won't be able to always line dry things outside. I'm not sure if the combo washer/dryers are any good and something I should consider or if I need to plan my purchases so that the washing machine and dryer are compatible to stack. Our current laundry has enough space that they won't need to stack, but it's a rental and we probably won't be here forever.

Can anyone suggest machines or brands that are good or anything I should 100% avoid. My sister bought a cheap cold water only machine and it's been awful so I'm hoping I can avoid the same experience. It's a big purchase and I desperately don't want to buy a dud.

    Bosch
    Bosch
    or
    Bosch

I've owned a Miele and an AKSO and the only one that's laster >5 years is the Bosch.

    • I've just ordered another Bosch, the old one is 17 years strong.
Had it's second failure since we bought it last weekend when a part of the frame that one of the drum support springs hangs from gave way from corrosion. Fixed it with a cut down M8 masonry bolt and a couple of tek screws.
min size is 8kg these days, but our 6.5 has gotten our family of five through quite comfortably. our children were 3, 1 and a newborn when we bought it
      .

    • I just brought a Bosch Washing machine & Dryer, I did my research but glad to hear someone else had a good experience with them. :P

Washing machines won't remove cat hair, just so you know. Water makes it stick even harder. And the hair will get entrenched in your machine so even clothes that you never touched the cat while wearing will get an even coverage of hair. Invest in sticky rollers, brush your cat regularly and vacuum regularly.

  • For a dryer, I've had an Esatto one for a couple of years now, used to dry all our clothes (none done outside), been fantastic. Also saw a massive cut in power bills after switching from the old style. On sale for about $600 at the moment too - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739085

Washing machine - Bosch, like everyone else. I had a Samsung before and the entire back plate cracked and broke at about 4-5 years old. I've never bought a large Samsung item that didn't fail surprisingly early, the gamble was whether during warranty or after.

  • I've owned Fisher and Paykel and Asko. One is on year 19 the other is a piece of crap.
The Asko 8kg has been a fantastic investment and I've had also owned their heat pump dryer which I gave to family when their tumble dryer broke down. The washing machine can handle wool, delicates, hand wash etc and had max spin of 1400rpm or lower 800rpm if needed. Admittedly, the new machines may be quite different to the older Askos.

I've not had the pleasure of Bosch, but recommend check out https://www.productreview.com.au/c/washing-machines.
Looks like Speed Queen is highly rated too.

  • My washing is a 12 y.o 7kg LG and it's still going strong.
Dryer is an Esatto heat pump one that has been ok for 4 years now. The only issue is if I put it on auto, I have to run it twice to completely dry the clothes.

For washing machines assuming you are talking about front loaders, a lot of brands only offer cold water only these days and heat up the water internally, if you want one with a hot water inlet only LG (on some models), Samsung, Fisher and Paykel, Asko (higher end models) and Miele (higher end models) have them.

For dryers you want to go with a heat pump dryer, they are more energy efficient but takes longer to dry and are more expensive. The most important thing is to select one with reverse tumble otherwise your laundry will ball up and may not dry evenly. I'd go with an Electrolux dryer it has reverse tumble and good drying according to online forums, but other brands that have reverse tumble heat pumps are F&P and Miele.
