Unbelievable pricing on a five year old game. That said, less bugs and better graphics than the new pokemon games.

    • +7

I'm playing through Scarlet now. It's truly spectacular how janky it looks in some parts.

    • +2

A horrible frame rate though, which I consider to be tied to graphic quality.

Great game, but I don't think I'll be able to do another Zelda at 30fps and less like this one was.

[Edit] Who am I kidding, I'll probably still play a new Zelda with a crappy frame rate. I'll love it a lot more if they release it on new hardware at 60fps though.

      • The bugs and frame rates is what gives it character.

        • -2

And what gives you hemorrhoids !

  • +6

Yessss I have been wanting to pick it up to finally play this masterpiece. Great price considering it almost never on sale

  • +5

5 years old, still almost full price. Madness.

    • +33

      Worth it, it's a masterpiece.

    • +7

      It's the Nintendo way

      • +2

        It's the Nintendo way

Yep. You should see what Nintendo online store is charging for not-that-popular games from 2011: https://ec.nintendo.com/AU/en/titles/70010000001280

At least BOTW is still one of the best games available in 2022. I think there's really no disputing it's still in the top ten games you can play today.

        • +4

          $90 for LA Noire, WTF

          • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: The only reason I’d consider it here is that my steam copy no longer even runs on modern windows…
            But I wouldn’t pay more than $15 or $20

          • @GandalfTheCheap: Nintendo doesn't set the prices for third party games 🤦‍♂️

        • +3

BOTW is probably in my top 3 of all time. It's such a gem. Considering buying a Switch just to play the sequel when it comes out.

          • @Hurg: How'd you play BOTW originally?

            • +1

@mafmouf: BOTW was on WiiU as well

            • +2

@mafmouf: Originally on the WiiU. Though a couple years later I borrowed a Switch off someone to replay it and 100% the temples.

    • +9

I think it's a smart way to do it for Nintendo. Make a quality product and then don't completely tank its value after 3 months. If I feel like if I want a Nintendo game I just buy it because I know it's not gonna be 80% off the next week. If a game isn't brand new on Xbox or Playstation then I'm never going to buy it at full price, because their system trains me to know the games are not worth that.

      • exactly, seems like AAA titles price tanks after 6months after release. yet you find with nintendo AAA titles hold their price

      • +4

Yeah it's a way of psychologically manipulating consumers called "price anchoring".

If you never ever do really big discounts, you miss out on loads of extra sales, but you also create a perception that your products are premium goods that are worth more.

Studies have shown it works on a deeply subconscious level; it even works on subjects who know what's happening, to some extent.

I suspect in 2022 it costs Nintendo more than it gains them. (Deep online discounts on steam etc have been proven to sell so well that a game often makes more total money in a day at $10 than in it's whole life at full price).

But I may well be wrong, for the reasons you've given. Nintendo is playing the long game here.

        • +2

I think you're confused on the meaning of price anchoring. Having a high list price just to contrast a lower frequent sale price is price anchoring. Having a high list price and rarely discounting it has nothing to do with price anchoring. Steam, not Nintendo, is the one that uses price anchoring (quite masterfully I would say).

          • +1

@NoshTwin: Oh sorry, I thought you were saying that this sale is an example of Nintendo's price anchoring, but I think that's not actually what you meant.

        • That theory doesn't account for the 2nd hand market.

You can keep the retail price of a physical game as high as you like, but it's not going to hold up if 2nd hand copies of the game rapidly saturates the market and makes it impossible to sell new copies of the game at anywhere near full price (#cough# TLOU2 #cough#).

The relatively few total stinkers on Nintendo platforms also tends to absolutely collapse in price (#cough# Metroid OM #cough#), though even those sometimes climb back up in price simply due to Nintendo cutting off production vs growing collectors' demand.

          • @pj1351: But those 2nd hand market doesn’t work with Nintendo first party unlike PlayStation. Even now no matter where you look you CANNOT get Zelda breath of the wild under 55-60 in any 2nd hand shop/website. Same with Luigi’s Mansion 3, Mario etc etc. I think this actually incentivises Nintendo to keep their prices high unlike PlayStation where they are routinely sold on 2nd hand way lower than their store price/buy new price. So PlayStation drops it as low as it can to get some sales/money rather than 0 money from 2nd hand sales. Ghost of Tsushima is the only game I saw which wasn’t put in bargain bin even to this day, even in 2nd hand market. Unlike TLOU II. So I guess PlayStation will change its approach going forward looking at the stability of Ghost of Tsushima in gamers.

            • +1

@kedireturns: I have got 6 Switch games (all first party) in the last couple of weeks.

Cash Converters , Breath of the Wild $54 delivered. Bowsers Fury $43 delivered. Captain Toad $40 delivered. Tennis Aces was $37 delivered

Over on Gumtree got Donkey Kong tropical Freeze for $39 delivered.

On Amazon got Mario Golf for $28.99 delivered.

Overall you are correct in what you say but bargains can be had if you are diligent :-)

            • +1

@kedireturns: That's… kind of my point.

If sellers can't sell for their asking price (or at least close to it), they'd eventually have to keep lowering their prices until it goes low enough that can get rid of it. And when you're competing with hundreds or thousands of other sellers, why would someone buy the same item from you for even $1 more than they can from someone else?

Nintendo games are desirable enough that on the 2nd hand market, even with games that sold as many copies as BOTW, new players are still willing to pay decent amount for a copy years down the track.

This means that Nintendo has no need to drastically undercut the prices of their games stay ahead of the 2nd hand market, nor for the 2nd hand market to likewise crater their prices to compete with new copies.

The good thing for us as consumers is that (unless it's an absolute stinker) you can buy a new release Switch game, with a safe bet that if you didn't like it as much as you expected, you can always offload it on the 2nd hand market for a decent price even more than a year down the line.

Meanwhile, if you buy a new release PlayStation game, you can generally expect that the game will be worth peanuts on the 2nd hand market within a year.

      • +3

They keep this price of old games that weren't even that high quality on release.

  • +1

Tempted to stuff in the collection but I did play right through it on the Wii U…great game

    • +6

Skip the Switch version and play the superior "remastered version" (the Wii U version at 4k @60FPS using Cemu on a gaming pc).

      • +2

Yep just did this - Plus you can cheat and give yourself inifinite stamina so you stop falling off freaking cliff faces!

      • +1

So good. I'm going through at 1080 90fps. Occasional bug but so pretty.

      • +2

Interesting… this "remastered version" just the original rom running on the Cemu?

        • +3

          Yup with the graphics enhancements.

          • +2

@Caped Baldy: Quick look and Cemu looks pretty impressive, will be sure to give it a shot

          • @Caped Baldy: Is it a mod or is it just some settings in cemu?

            • +3

              @dajackal: Both.

Technically mods, but you just hit the "download graphics packs" button in Cemu and then there's a new screen in Cemu settings where you can choose 1080p, 4k, etc for higher res, and 60FPS, 120FPS, etc for smoother framerates.

      • +2

Wow ok I did not know about this but certainly I have the PC for it. Thanks so much!

      • +2

100% do this. Maybe buy it so it's all above board, then set it aside and run it on your PC in Cemu. 4k @60fps + huge draw distance plus other graphical enhancements. It actually makes me pretty mad that such a wonderful game is experienced by so many in a sub-par way on the Switch & Wii U. It's honestly glorious played on a PC like this.

  • +1

Because of its perfection BOTW2 is taking its sweet time to be released.

    • Gamefreak need to take notes

      • +2

Gamefreak make the most garbage games. Just selling on the IP

        • +2

Yea they don't care too much about reception and feedback they care about sales which keep on coming regardless.

      • +1

Gamefreak need more than 100 staff for their games.

        • +1

Staff probably isn’t the problem. It’s that plus scheduling and management. They don’t give their devs time to make their games anymore

    • yeah I am hoping for a MMORPG so we can see other players in the world.

  • +1

I need a deal for the console… Kids Christmas present. Tempted to buy the game already though :D

    • There are decent deals pretty often on eBay, and no doubt there'll be a killer deal come Friday on Amazon/Big W.

      • That's what I'm banking on. Don't need oled so hoping for a good price on the standard switch model!

  • +3

I bought it for $49 on Nov 2020 during Black Friday deal.

  • +1

    Best game ever

  • +1

    Best game ever

  • +5

I'll check back in another five years and see if it manages to go down another $10.

    • +3

Try JB price match with sign up $10 perk coupon

    • +1

will never happen. Nintendo games made by nintendo only go up in value never down, and if you have played the game you would know this game is worth the cost.

      • +1

they only go down if the console is discounted. When the wii u was dropped JBHIFI had titles for $5-$10

  • +2

its a very old game but even I am still playing it now definatlly a must have on the switch.

    • +1

      300 + hours here

      • I Bought the offical guide and still haven't finished it lol.

  • +1

Tried to replay this a few months ago on my launch model switch and boy things have changed. I only remember poor performance in the Deku forest area on my original play through (didn't get to the end however), but this time there was really low frame rate and stutter all over the place. I eventually just put it down. Such a shame Nintendo seems to have no interest in doing a Switch Pro or something with a bit more power.

    • Since the current Switch models are still selling well, why would Nintendo bother releasing a better one?

That being said, I'd buy a Switch Pro in an instant. I love playing handheld, but some games are really starting to show the hardware's age now.

    • +1

It's crazy, but the truth is, PC has played Breath of the Wild better than the Switch for years now.

Not even pricy hardcore gaming PCs: my kids old PC from 2011 beats the Switch easily: 1080p AND smooth 30FPS. The Cemu emulator supports 4k, 120FPS, etc.

Laptops with fairly weak graphics work well too.

Buy the game and shelve it if you don't want to pirate, that's what I did. But if you want to play Nintendo's best current game in it's best form, you need a PC.

    • +1

Well they've definitely lost me as a customer (for now). I remember one of the main reasons I bought the Switch was for Metroid Prime 4 - but even if that came out now, without a hardware boost I'd still give it a miss as there's no way it wouldn't have issues.

  • One of the best games on the Switch. I paid $49 for an all but new copy from Cash Converters and it's definitely worth the $59.

  • -3

Have you guys heard of Facebook marketplace? Why the hell would you buy switch games new unless it's a great price… BOTW $45 comes up all the time.

  • It shows as $69 for me just now. Has the price gone up or am I missing something?
