Topping DX1 Desktop DAC/Amp $126.65 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

80

From what I can tell it's the cheapest price on this new device. I haven't tried it yet but it's getting good reviews.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2022

  • There isn't much on AudioScienceReview but i suspect decent enough for budget price range product. Not enough features or power for my tastes.

    • Its powered via the usb when you connect it to a computer.
You wont be able to power anything heavy for sure.
But yeah, its a good budget desktop DAC/AMP

Will this be good for a sennheiser HD599? It's currently plugged straight into PC mobo. I guess I'm wondering if it will benefit from this or not, if anybody has any experience with something like this…

Your mobo should be enough to power the HD599. I don't think this will provide a difference to justify its costs, unless your mobo is actually bad with its rated impedance. Do your HD599s sound loud and clear already? If so, I feel you won't benefit from this DAC/Amp

      • They sound okay, and can be loud enough using the gain switch on the realtek software, but sometimes it sounds a little muddled, especially when listening to music.

Keep in mind I'm no expert and have not tried the device myself, but according to the guy in this reddit thread the Sennheiser 6xx/650 work well with the Topping DX1, which might be a bit harder to drive than the 599 model… can any experts back me up on that? You can also toggle between high and low gain on the DX1 to get better range. https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/xnzt1x/topping_…

I'm hoping that it's going to work well with my headphones — based on other comments in that thread on similar headphones I THINK they will work and hopefully will sound better than plugged straight into my laptop (fingers crossed)

Correct. Impedence on the 600/6xx/650 is 300 ohm vs. 50 ohm on the 599 so the 6-series need a lot more power to drive. 599s should sound better using DX1 than your PC, assuming it doesn't have any special audio chips.

        • I have a MAG X570S TOMAHAWK, which uses ALC4080 audio processor. Are you able to advise whether it would be worth the jump? Thank you.

@tony2shanks: Educated guessing, since the DX1 is not externally powered, I wouldn't expect a dramatic difference unless you have a very good ear. On PC take a look at Peace which uses Equalizer APO and allows you to tweak to your headphones (using oratory1990 data). Bit messy to setup but noticeable differences once done.
