Is it possible to switch my Xbox's region to another country (e.g. Argentina) and use a VPN to switch my IP and then purchase games on that country's regional Xbox store on my PAL console?
Would they be region locked?
Seems relatively easy, bar the obvious fees from paying international currency on an Australian card.

Goodluck. I've never tried honestly, I'm not even sure how to get the keys from Microsoft store (buy as gift maybe?). But you can certainly get them on sale from third party resellers. Keep in mind that some very popular games don't get discounted much or at all even in Argentina or similar.
There's no need to change your xbox region.
I buy Argentina games through G2A and Eneba. They provide the activation code which can only be activated in the region the game is set to.
I simply activate my VPN on PC to the relevant region, access redeem.microsoft.com, input xbox game code and done. The game gets attached to the microsoft account, not the xbox. At that point I can simply log into my norman xbox account and download the game (using my regular AU xbox profile/account).
Recommend not buying from g2a. A lot of their keys are purchased with stolen credit card information and you run the risk of an Xbox account ban when charge backs come through. Search about it online if you want.

Back in 2015 you could use a VPN to purchase games from foreign Microsoft stores on your xbox. You can purchase from other regions by gift cards or paypal (if you have account in that region).
I use this guy - super reliable and recommended - not sketch like g2a, also from Ukraine so that's nice.
When you change region you will lose access to those games is my understanding, it warns you of that when you do the region swap.
However, if you create a new account and use it to buy product keys in Argentina, then you can use a VPN on mobile or PC to activate them on your actual account (no region change required)
