Having bought many software based audio packs when I was more into music production, I’d say, use other means to get software if you aren’t actually making money with your music. Or buy hardware.
You generally can’t resell software at all, so if you lose interest, all that money goes down the drain. Hardware at least you can sell.

I couldn't agree more.
But you can resell Ableton Live and also you can do lots with just stock plugins. You don't need to buy plugins and samples.
Also if you can't justify Ableton's price, there are other options from free to cheap.
Dang doesn't stack with educational discount :P
