Anaconda Black Friday Price Jacking

Has anyone else noticed Anaconda jacking their prices during their so called "Black Friday Sale"?

Have had my eye on the Dune 4WD Jumbo Premium mat which had a club price of $149, and now it is showing as $169.

The other one I've noticed is the Lifetime Sports Table, usually $99, now a whopping $159! Even Googling "Lifetime Sports Table" shows as $99 in the results but clicking the link lands you at $159 on their website.

Can they just remove their club price and advertise a higher "sale" price, and not get in trouble for it?

I'm sure they're not the only ones that do it, but it's the first time I've noticed it on specific items I've been tracking.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2022

    Dob them in.

I bought a tent there a few weeks ago for $499, it's now on sale for $599.

I'm glad I'm not just imagining it! Very dodgy

      Congratulations on your $100 profit.

Their black Friday sale starts on the 19th, today. Their catalogue, which included 40% off Dune for club, ended on the 18th Friday.

    • I still feel it's a bit dodgy to advertise a "sale" price higher than what was advertised yesterday. If it was back to normal pricing I'd say that's fine, but to replace a sale with another "sale" at a higher price isn't right.

      • +2

Catalogue sale prices change all the time mate…. If you bought it on Thurs and now it's $90, are you going to say it's dodgy too?

        • +4

That's not the same thing. Advertising an item as a sale when it is a higher price than what it was yesterday, is dodgy.

Buying an item today and the price dropping tomorrow is called bad luck.

Again, if the item had returned to its default RRP then I'd have no problem, the issue is they're misleading customers by claiming it's a black Friday sale when it was cheaper yesterday.

@mab5125: No it’s not dodgy. Yesterday there was a 40% off sale. That finished. It’s now on sale again but with a smaller discount. Stores do they all the time.

            • +2

              @dtc: ^This.

Nike does it all the time. A shoe might be 40% off one day, the next it's 25% as part of their "Member Days Sale".

I don't see it dodgy at all. Just track the prices like you have and know when it's a good price to buy.

You can of course report to the ACCC…but nothing will happen.

@dtxau: Exactly, the law doesn’t say once you reduce a price you can’t raise it, and discount by another amount.

What you can’t say is that it was one price and the discount is now off that was price when it wasn’t that price. Eg was $100 now 40% off - $60. If the last price wasn’t $100 but was $50.

If you say Discount is 40% off regular price or members price, then if you now offer it for 35% off thats not price jacking it’s just reducing the discount.

So magic is the wording used. Just like dtxau says track prices. If Amazon you can use Camelx3

No law either says the black Friday or any other type of sale has to be cheaper than previous sales. I bought a bike from Kogan that was half the price of their now Black Friday price for the same bike. However while I was smart on that buy, another item I bought a few days ago is now $5 cheaper on the Black Friday sale.

Yes I bought an item yesterday in store, it was ticketed at $19.99 member price but scanned up at $15.99. She mentioned the tickets were for a sale starting tomorrow. So obviously a bit of jacking going on..

Oh golly gosh I am shocked to hear that.

  • +1

Well, it's always the "one sale ending (so they put it back to RRP or whatever) and another sale starting now" excuse.

  • +2

    What is the RRP?
Sale, special and club prices can vary from time to time. It's the RRP that you need to track as this is the real price before any discounts and this is the one that matters.

  • I dunno about this store. I know someone who started shopping there and was always really hyped by it. Always saying when you go in store the discounts are amazing.

Seemed like to me they were doing some kind of deal where they buy stock for cheap from other stores or distributors during liquidation and then sell it cheaper than the original stores price, but higher than it should be for something that didn't sell and is discounted.
Also browsed their website a couple times to see what they had and recognized a lot of cheapie stuff mixed in that you can get on websites like Aliexpress except selling at huge markup.

Is it some kind of rare gem of a store filled with bargains? I don't think so. Can you occasionally find a genuine bargain? In my opinion yes but you have to sort through and recognize the misleading crap.

Most stuff at Anaconda is pretty low end and just rebranded Aliexpress stuff yes. Can be reasonably well priced when on sale if you want convenience/don't want to wait for shipping. The genuine bargains happen when they have clearance specials which vary from store to store, usually at least 50% extra off already reduced price for clothing. I've got North Face Goretex shoes for less than $20 each along with quality pants, shirts etc dirt cheap this way. Depends on the manager though, some stores are pretty stingey with the discounts. They have also had some amazing price errors in the past which they have honoured, of note this year was the Minelab metal detectors. So I quite like Anaconda overall, you just have to be wary of their never ending sales and changing prices to make sure you don't pay too much.

I should have been more clear with what I meant. I think Anaconda are sourcing a lot of their product range in bulk from wholesalers like Alibaba (are they still around?) so they must be able to get those items for very cheap. You could say they could be getting that stock for cheaper than smaller sellers on Aliexpress, but I guess with added fees etc such as for importing maybe it works out about the same. So I think we agree when I say Anaconda could be selling those products at a similar price to Aliexpress sellers.
And I can understand they add to the price to cover faulty products etc.

  • Standard practice now to manage 90% of ‘bargain hunters’.
The RRP set by distributor is ridiculously high - say $899. AnaSnowyBCF discount via a sale price to $599 in place every day. They then have a sale - with some semi-decent things to get you looking, but the $899 RRP item is now on sale for $699.
And they do quite well because folk that don’t put the time in are able to say they got it on ‘sale’.
The old line from the Marx Brothers comes to mind - ‘Never give a sucker an even break’.

Well their retail price for the Dune 4WD Jumbo Premium mat is $339.99. So I don't see how it's price jacking if a SALE price went from one sale $149.00 to a different sale of $169.99. It's a sale price. Still a lot cheaper than $339.99. Best you can do is ask them to match the previous sale but in no way is it price jacking when the RRP stays the same. Why would they get in trouble for it?

  • Just got the email about their Black Friday specials.

4WD Drive Deals are just some of what is available.

  • Have had my eye on the Dune 4WD Jumbo Premium mat which had a club price of $149, and now it is showing as $169.

Look like it is even cheaper $119-$169

  • I've seen this b4, on a tent, club price vs "fake real price"

  • Yeah with Anaconda you have to recognise that they are a 'constant sale' store. The RRP is just a stooge to make the real price (which is what the price will be most of the time but not all the time) seem like a bargain.

I like Anaconda, and have gotten some good stuff from there at a price I was very happy with, but I'm seasoned.

I did once buy a knife from there at 'gasp' RRP but I really wanted it that day for reasons I won't get into.

    …wait that didn't sound right.
