HDHomeRun Flex Quatro HDFX-4DT (DVB-T/T2/C) US$199.99 (~A$300) Delivered @ Silicondust

Hey All!

I've been looking to get a HDHomeRun for a while now but prices on eBay/Amazon have been very inflated, but it looks like SiliconDust have them back in stock!

I know this isn't a "BARGAIN", but they are very rare to find in stock, so I'd though I'll share for those who are also looking.

It also looks like this may be their new Flex model, as they also have refurb available for the Connect Quadro and Duo.

Nothing on free to air is worth that much to watch.

    • And some of us think the opposite. There's nothing you have to pay for that's worth what you have to pay for it. Most of what the big American media companies turn out is just rubbish.

Wouldn't the opposite be "everything on free to air is worth that much to watch"?

  • I thought the US ones don't work properly with AU signal? At least that's how it use to be

    • I also recall there being some kind of issue for AU users when I looked into these the last couple of times.

I can't recall what the exact problem was anymore, just that it wasn't a feasible option.

      • I've been using a Connect Quattro for years without any problems with the HDHomeRun device itself, but major issues relating to continuing to use Microsoft Windows Media Center long after Microsoft decided to discontinue support for it. Right now as I do this I have ABC Weekend Breakfast running in a window in the top right corner of computer screen using Silicon Dust's own TV software.

The difference with the Flex Quattro is that its not just a LAN connected 4-tuner tuner, you can connect local storage and record on it so its a DVR, which the product description infers requires some sort of ongoing software subscription. I don't know anything about that.

I have to say I've rarely seen software that works as well as Silicon Dust's. And Windows Media Center was just as good. Until Microsoft switched from wanting Windows users to use it, to doing everything it could to stop them.

Still rocking wmc on win 11. Quadro works well when you find something on FTA to watch and or record

          • @Pixie13: I kept running Windows 7 for my "TV" because every new half yearly major update to Windows 10 sabotaged my WMC installation. I had to keep uninstalling and re-installing it to get it working properly again. Now that Microsoft has moved on to Windows 11, I'm moving to Windows 10. Do Windows 11 updates stuff up WMC?

        • So, you're not using yours as a DVR, just live TV?
Bit of pain to have pay ongoing fees.

          • @RecklessMonkeys: The Flex Quattro can store the recorded content on its own attached hard disk. It stays running all the time, and when you want to view the recorded material you connect to it. Windows Media Center just uses any model HDHomeRun as a tuner, and stores the recorded content on its hard disk. It wakes up the PC when the program is due to start, records the program, then you view it when you want, and delete it when you don't want it any longer.

Since I do the latter on my "TV" PC (and don't have a Flex Quattro) I don't have to pay a subscription fee, but recorded programs are only accessible on that PC they were recorded on. And on this "work" PC I just watch live, but you can rewind and pause, and fast forward after pausing, which is handy when there are interruptions and other things to do.

What's great about Quattro is having 4 tuners. It doesn't matter if two or three or even four FTA TV programs conflict. Or if you're not sure a program is worth spending time watching to see if it is. Like the news. You just record 'em, and watch them later, and fast forward through, or delete, what isn't.

These are DVB models, so work fine here. The ATSC won’t work though (but aren’t linked above)

Why not just use the FTA streams directly and save yourself $300?

    https://www.matthuisman.nz/search/label/IPTV?m=1

    • I like to record via wmc.

      • You can also use TVHeadEnd

        • Thanks for that, I'll look into it 🙂 always great to learn new things

      • I was a diehard WMC user for nearly a decade but with everything basically available on catchup and the fact that FTA in Aus in just filled with Love Island shit type shows, hard to justify anymore..
My old WMC just sits in the garage now…

    • Not all content is streamed. Particularly sport.

Because you can channel surf on these without changing apps and also watch FTA where digital apps aren’t allowed to transmit due to digital rights.

Why not just use the FTA streams directly and save yourself $300?

Because these unofficial workarounds inevitably stop working at some point. And then you have to futz around finding the new workaround.

    • This is not dependant on the internet for streaming

  • Nice piece of kit, still a little pricier than I’m willing to pay for broadcast tv accessories considering we hardly use it… but if you run TVHeadEnd it works very nicely

  • What backend are you guys using these days, anything with any good ad skipping detection. Years ago I used to use mythTv.

Still wmc with win11. Still have the remote, so 30 sec at a times skip, works well

I've tested with Plex, Channels, and the HDHomerun DVR service itself, and found Plex was the best experience / bang for buck.

Saying that, I haven't hooked up my HDHomerun since moving house 6 months ago - I've been using Matts Kodi Freeview add-on with EPG, which has been excellent (and yes, you could watch the AFL grand final live):

These have been out of stock for a long time.

I still use MythTV, and watch via Kodi.

I will look into moving to Plex soon, anyone know what the situation is with the AU TV guide for Plex now?

TVMosaic is okay for recording in Windows.

  • Thanks for this OP, I grabbed a four-tuner model and I'll sell my two-tuner HDHR.
