Deliveroo AU Has Been Placed into Voluntary Administration, Is Exiting Australian Market and Not Refunding Credits/Gift Cards

Just got this email from Deliveroo:

We have today made the sad announcement that we are leaving Australia. This has been a difficult decision to make. We have enjoyed serving you the amazing food that Australia is known for, working with thousands of brilliant restaurants and riders.

Deliveroo, like all other companies, is now doing business in challenging economic conditions, which requires us to take difficult decisions. We always aim to deliver the best possible service for our consumers wherever we operate, and if we cannot do that we will be prepared to review our position.

In Australia, we have concluded that achieving a sustainable position of leadership in the market is not possible without a disproportionate level of investment which would have highly uncertain returns.

On the basis of this decision, Deliveroo Australia has been placed into administration. The director of Deliveroo Australia has appointed Michael Korda, Andrew Knight and Craig Shepard of KordaMentha as voluntary administrators. To find out more, including information for creditors, please visit click here. You will receive further communications from the Administrators shortly.

What this means for you

Deliveroo Australia has ceased operations, meaning you can no longer place orders on Deliveroo in Australia.

You will still be able to access your customer account for up to 6 months from this date onwards. After this period your customer account will be closed. Within this period while your account is open, you can download your customer information.

Thank you for ordering with Deliveroo.

For any further information, please visit the administrators’ website at: https://kordamentha.com/creditors

Notably, Deliveroo is not refunding anyone with account credits or gift cards, and if you have these you are now an unsecured creditor:

https://kordamentha.com/getmedia/282f335e-a43a-4c7c-8162-c8a…

19. I have a credit on my customer account. Will it be refunded?
Customers with credits on their accounts will not be refunded for this amount. Such customers are deemed to be unsecured creditors in the Administration and should submit a Proof of Debt form. Further information on how to lodge a Proof of Debt form will be provided in due course.

26. Will gift cards be honoured?
As the Company ceased trading immediately, gift cards cannot be honoured or refunded. Customers with unexpired/unused gift cards are deemed to be unsecured creditors in the Administration and should submit a Proof of Debt form. Further information on how to lodge a Proof of Debt form will be provided in due course.

I note that Deliveroo plc (the UK-based parent company of Deliveroo Australia Pty Ltd) gave customers from The Netherlands 42 days notice before ending their operations: https://corporate.deliveroo.co.uk/media/deliveroo-announces-…
Seems pretty disgraceful to rug-pull all their Australian customers, employees, contractors and restaurant partners like this when clearly they didn't have to for NL. They should probably take "roo" out of their name..

  • I guess the business model of losing money on every sale, but making up for it in volume never took off.

    Good.

It's about time we expected companies to (shock) make money and have sustainable business models. That sweet sweet pool of dumb venture capital money has dried up, and we're now seeing who is left floundering.

_18. I have pre-paid for an order that wasn’t delivered. Will it be refunded?
No, any pre-paid orders that have not been delivered at the date of the Administration will rank as an unsecured claim
against the Company and be deemed to be an unsecured creditor. Customers should submit a Proof of Debt form.
Further information on how to lodge a Proof of Debt form will be provided in due course.

_20. Do I need to pay the Company for a delivery received now that it is in Administration?
Yes, you are still required to pay for goods delivered/service provided to you by the Company from prior to the
appointment of Administrators. We will issue separate communications to the Company’s debtors with payment
    instructions in this regard.

Typical capitalist scum environment we are in.

Rights have been given away in the name of greed.

  • So their drivers all just lost their jobs overnight?

    • +2

Drivers all work on multiple delivery platforms so they just have 1 less delivery service to operate on.

      • business-wise werent there some "deliveroo-exclusive" shops also? i know some are "ubereats-only"

  • Does that mean menulog will stop with its offers as now there is less competition?

  • Everyone that bought the gift cards just place a charge back request on your credit card.

    • You watch shopback try and reject every single chargeback claim. They'll weasel out of it, absolutely consider boycotting shopback if that's the case

      • Shopback have provided $25 cashback for $100 deliveroo GC, which means you only paid $75 for the gift card. If you then claim a chargeback, you are literally making a profit of $25, which shopback will need to take the hit for.

And what is stopping someone who has already used the gift card and claim chargeback? Triple dipping into everything?

        • +1

This is why it takes months for you to be able to withdraw. They know the cut off dates for chargebacks and wait until that passes.

          • @Mr BoMBAStiG: My $25 is already confirmed. Gift cards are usually really fast.

            • @CodeXD: Confirmed but withdrawal subject to approval.

    • u may apparently risk ban from shopback if do that? just bear in mind

Their scooter riders scare me !

On the app, go to Payment Methods>Edit>Delete your CC. You shouls get an error prompt "this is associated with your delivery plus subscription". On the same screen, click on 'Manage Subscription' This will take you to the Delivery Plus part. Click Cancel Subscription.
As an added measure, go back to Payment Methods and remove CC.

    • +1

what platform are you, iOS, Android or PC?
I am iOS I could not do it.

      • What about on PC?

        https://deliveroo.com.au/account

I removed my payment methods from account page.

        • I could not do it from my iPhone. You need to use Android phone. I have successfully deleted my Credit Card. I borrowed my son Android phone, install the Deliveroo App, login, go to Payment method, delete credit card details, Manage subscription pop up, click on it, direct me to Deliveroo plus, and go from there. Hope this help you all.

        • it wont let me delete on PC

  • As much as I had bad experiences with Deliveroo, less competition in the food delivery market isn't good news

it may stop the others from failing, though

Bought deliveroo gift cards from Prezzee a while back. Chargeback filed with Amex yesterday evening. This morning already closed and decided in my favour.

"As a result of our investigation, we have credited your account. This adjustment can be found on your next statement."

    • +1

      ya Amex got the dosh

how long did it take you to file the chargeback?

also how much was the amount?

    • Would appreciate more details on the process if possible please!

  • Terrible. Very sorry for all who bought gift cards

  • +1

    Hahahaha!!! Byebye!!

  • -7

here's an idea. Call up your local, make an order and go pick it up and bring it home. Cut the middle man and save on the higher prices these apps have, service fees, delivery fees. Also less chance of food being cold if you pickup.

    • +3

You're missing the whole point of food delivery services

      • -5

        Feeding drunks?

Beyond that, I'm not seeing much of a market.

        • -7

Downvote me all you like. I didn't downvote anyone. Don't neg me and not reply.

What's the point of food delivery services?

If I can get in my car and get fresher food cheaper and quicker, why would I pay extra to get worse food and have it take longer?

      • -3

I replied to myself deliberately to not point any fingers.

But it's obvious you negged me with nothing to say.

Why don't you respond? Just say something if you think you have a point.

        • +3

Relax man, I didn't neg you… Even if I did why are you so triggered. The point of food delivery services is so I dont have to leave the house. What if I dont have a car? Broke my leg? Have a baby at home? Or just for convenience sake, I just want to be lazy after working all day… All valid reasons to use food delivery.

          • @umoddbro: Have Covid.

          • -1

@umoddbro: Triggered? Because I asked why failing businesses are failing? That's what you call "triggered"? Ok. I've sucked you in as well. It's a great argument. You responded so you are now triggered too.

There are many valid reasons to use food delivery services. I guess there just ain't enough people with broken legs to make them profitable.

My family has been involved in volunteer food deliveries such as meals on wheels.

Pile on the neg votes people. I'm really enjoying basking in your sanctimonious ignorance. Keep them coming.

            • @the wiz: Here's an idea, take your car and drive yourself to the nearest psychotherapist and show them this conversation

              • @liongalahad: Right back at you.

I've said nothing wrong. Ask your shrink why you were so desperate to join an attack that doesn't even make sense.

I just asked how food delivery services can make a profit.

I suspect I'm dealing with trolls now.

Edit: As I said, we've been involved in charitable food delivery organizations. Does this impact your bullshit food delivery scooter business? Is that why you want to shut me up?

    • its gonna be cold if i have to sprint 5kms to get to the store

  • (profanity) DELIVEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I guess i'm not the only one that got stunned with the Shopback one last hoorah Deliveroo gift card discount

  • You can still deactivate your account, get in and delete quick!

    • +3

will that do much? possibly retained for a while if weve learnt anything from optus/medibank ..

  • It seems every time these gift cards go on special, the vendor folds shortly thereafter

  • +1

I feel sorry for the food businesses and drivers and whether they have been paid for their recent work and food orders.

  • +2

I hope we start to order food directly with the businesses now.

    • it's still convenient to have a singular "marketplace" app that has all restos listed

  • +2

Filed a chargeback claim last night with CommBank. I just got a reply that they will refund me the full amount of the gift cards I got (which I’ve loaded into my Deliveroo account but unused). But now it gets interesting because I already got the cashback from ShopBack buying those gift cards before this circus started. Does that mean I’m double dipping?

    • Would love to know what you put as the reason/explanation please :)

      • +1

I just put something like "Deliveroo collapsed, gift card purchase", even though the description on the bank statement says ShopBack. They seem to have understood what I meant.

    • You win sir

    Shopback response:
    Hi there,

Yesterday, and much like the rest of you, we were surprised to learn that Deliveroo had gone into voluntary administration.

ShopBack was not aware of Deliveroo's intention to exit Australia and we are equally frustrated by the lack of communication.

That said, we are committed to finding a resolution for our customers, and have teams working round-the-clock to determine the best course of action.
In the meantime, we thank you for your patience.

We ask for your kind patience with our customer support team as they continue to work tirelessly to help address your concerns.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] if you have any further inquiries, we would gladly be of assistance.

    Best Regards,
    Team ShopBack

    • Yep, i got this same response too

    • If I have redeemed the voucher into deliveroo account, can Shopback still assist in this case? Havent used the credit

  • +1

Anyone paid with Coles MasterCard GC and filed a charge back or know how and whether it is possible to file a charge back?

    • +1

I did, called them, explained, filled and signed form. Will take a while.

      • +1

Thanks mate. Are you able to share the link to the form?

        • In same boat. Please share details.

        • Form is unique as it has prefilled details.

          • @tajid: Sorry, didn't get what you meant. Did they send you a form with prefilled details? Who did you contact InComm?

  • Anyone paid with cryptocom card?
lol can't find chargeback option, or is it via livechat only?

    • Livechat only

  • (profanity)'em after my KFC order was missing 3 pieces of chicken, a dropped potato and gravy and arrived stone cold after 2 hours. I tried followed it up 3 times and was ghosted. Deliveroo can burn.

  • Shame, they were my primary food delivery service. They charged me $12.99 5 days ago for Deliveroo Plus. I don't expect to get that back but I can't even remove my existing payment details since it says it's attached to a Plus membership but I can't cancel the Plus membership since it just redirects to the no longer operating in Australia page.

    • If you have android , remove the credit card info which will leads to manage subscription page . Cancel the subscription and then delete the payment. It’s works android but not an iOS. Give a try

      • I'm on iOS, so there was no cancel subscription button. I was able to remove the card from ApplePay and delete my deliveroo account, so should be good. I opened a credit card dispute for my $12.99 but I guess there is no money to refund.

  • +6

I bought $300 worth of Deliveroo gift cards last week when I participated in the Shopback Deliveroo promo. Deliveroo just defrauded customers and pulled out of Australia. I will lodge a complaint with ACCC and follow up with the voluntary administrators.

  • +3

I have lodged a complaint with ACCC. Name and Shame it

  • -4

    Poor fatties

  • I bought this with the coles master giftcards
Any advice on if I can get a refund, if shopback doesn't step up?

  • Shopback should use Paypal for their gift cards. Paypal could probably have provided the financial protection against voluntary administrations.

    • They don't make a lot of margin on the gift cards, so PayPal fees would kill the deal.

  • I love deliveroo

  • Wonder if ShopBack will take action against those who ChargeBack

    • They should. People who charged back received the $100 back and $25 cashback from that purchase.

      • Agreed. I decided not to withdraw the $25 and happy for them to take them back.

        • If you're going to chargeback against Shopback, I suggest you withdraw all the balance you can and stop using Shopback. It's likely they'll recoup the losses from the chargeback on your Shopback balance.

  • +5

Menulog will honour deliveroo gift card up to $75

    • +1

That's the link for Menulog voucher
      https://www.menulog.com.au/campaign/deliveroo-vouchers

    • now downgraded to $50

      • I still see it as $75. Opened in incognito, says $50. Refresh - $75.

      • I applied after you posted this, just got a $75 Menulog voucher. They asked if I wanted 1x$75 voucher or 3x$25 vouchers.

Very happy with this, I'm still out a bit of $ but after a shopback cashback and Menulog I'm only out about $30 now.

        • Yup still a lot out… I spent $1,100 on vouchers….. this does not even touch the sides…

          • +2

@SpaceJudge: Did you already redeem all of it? You can split it up into different deliveroo accounts and claim up to $75 each.

  • +1

What about the unused gift cards :(

  • +3

I got a heap of scam texts and phone calls pretending to be Deliveroo the other day so I guess they sold all our contact data online to make some money back before shutting down.

  • +4

Good reminder for me to not buy GC just bc it's a good deal. I only have woolies and Amazon currently, I feel fairly safe with them

  • +2

Just a received an email with the subject from Deliveroo "There's still time to let us know how it's going" and asking me how likely I would recommend Deliveroo to a friend or family member out of 1-10.

Not likely dipshits! The fact these emails still come through, wouldn't be surprised if a charge pops up in the coming months for Deliveroo Plus

  • What does it take to push for a law that makes gift card holder a secured creditor?

    • Never going to happen, the very nature of a gift card under consumer law makes it an unsecured debt.

if it was secured then they would need to provide you something of equal value even if you use the credit which you must return on the credits use. Just doesn't make sense at all.

      • The law is whatever the legislators write and agree to. Either they fix the priority (gift card holders go to the very top of the creditors) or banned them all. Otherwise, it is just a legalised scam..

  • This is really weird. I signed up to get a free Deliveroo Plus membership through Commbank only a week ago.

  • -1

I feel for businesses in Australia. Hard for any businesses to stay afloat apart from the corporate ones.

  • Email from ShopBack:
"Thank you so much for your patience so far.

We are happy to be able to provide some more updated information on this for you. Our teams are continuing to investigate tirelessly to find the best possible solutions and gather all the relevant info to be able to exact those solutions, including clarity on each ShopBack users' pending Deliveroo Gift Card balances.

As ShopBack cannot identify the remaining balance of the gift cards ourselves, we will need to contact either the Administrating company KordaMentha or Deliveroo AU personnel for further assistance, which may take a short while.

For now, as we are working hard to be able to provide our own solutions, we ask that chargebacks for the pending amounts are avoided, as this might further complicate this issue whilst we are investigating.

We will continue to update you on our progress in resolving this, and we can't thank you enough for your patience with us here at ShopBack."

    • +1

Of course they do not want you to do a chargeback, then they are left holding the bag instead of you.

    • +2

      From consumer affairs site:
There are time limits on making a chargeback claim that vary from 45 to 120 days from the transaction date. Check your card provider's time limit and submit a claim as soon as possible.

Shopback has not been clear about whether they will refund anything if at all. Just we careful if they decide not to, you may have run out of time to charge back. They could drag this out to up to 120 days then say sorry we decided not to refund you.

      • Exactly. ShopBack need to give us a date they will resolve this by and make some guarantees if they want to avoid people making a claim.
