Gaming PC for Nephew - Budget edit $800-900

Looking for a budget gaming PC for 2x nephews 10 yrs old. Looking at a budget around $600 if possible.

Can be without case unless can price one in. But would probably need a PSU unless a basic 400w generic one would suffice.

Doesn't need keyboard mouse or monitor. I can also put a 2Tb HDD for storage.

Any prebuilt or what parts would you guys recommend?

Something like this I think would be ok if could knock something off to about $650-$700 max? Happy to build it if I can get it all for about $600

Cheers

    • OP just missed this deal : AMD Ryzen 5 5500 $111.51, Ryzen 5 5600G $147.11, Ryzen 5 5600 $164.91, Ryzen 7 5700X $270.93

I think 5600 would be better than 3600 in the long run.

      32 GB RAM is $111 = https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/736676

      • Agreed, go for the 5600, might have to wait till blackfriday tho. In terms of motherboard, you may have to get a more current one, or update the bios instore to ensure support

No point spending more on 32 GB with that proposed build.

Please do not subject your nephew to a mechanical 2Tb - even if free. SSD you should consider mandatory.

Wouldn't the 2TB drive be good for storing all his downloaded linux distros?

For storage. Definately an ssd for os and a few games.

IMO Buy a refurb SFF and put a low profile video card in.
    6th Gen i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, etc, are like $200, then $250ish on a lot profile GTX1650.

Gives you $100+ left over to potentially upgrade RAM/Storage/etc. Or maybe get something like RGB Keyboard and Mouse so it looks pretty. 10 y/os love RGB.

    • Yeah guess it has some decent specs will look into it

  • Xbox / Playstation probably far better at that budget point …

    • Exactly.

A One X or Series S with two years of Gamepass is still way cheaper, and will have more co-op options for two players than PC.

they can play NFS2 split screen with GLide though :D
Anyway, I think a PC would be better as they can do anything they want (ex: learn to code etc)

    • Yeah i don't know just got asked about a pc. Id prefer to game on a pc….They have a Nintendo switch.

Problem is that this far down the budget scale, you're always going to have problems and compromises. Even if it's okay now, in a couple of years they won't be playing any modern games as you won't have enough capacity to do so.

Just because they might want a PC doesn't make it the best choice

      • A PC at this budget won't even play that well on anything but a 1080p screen, and even at 1080p the settings will need to be reduced in some titles :/

What resolution is their monitor / TV they plan to play this PC on?

  • At this budget, if you have the ability I would purchase a gaming PC second hand of Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree etc. You need to ensure that you're getting a good deal and not being ripped off, but if you can do that you can find a bargain. Alternatively if you can't find something, an ex business small form factor with a low profile graphics card is a good option as another user recommended.

I recently purchase this off Facebook Markeplace for reference for just $400.00. I then swapped to a newer looking case and all up it owes me around $450.00.
    Intel i5 9400F, GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 80+ PSU, Case.

  • Yeah cheers. I had looked at second hand on market place nothing around that value near me.

  • XSX

  • AM4 platform has good discounts atm. Don’t buy second hand. It’s my mantra. Could be fine, but a lot of time people are selling you their trash

  • Ok so after some discussions and family going to put some money in. The budget is 800-900 for a complete case.
What's the best deal. I can build it but have been out of the loop since about 2013 when i built my pc so no idea what's what.
With the increased budget is the i3 or 3600 still the better choice or would a 5600 be the go?

  • Nothing to contribute, but just want to let you know you're a good uncle.
