Europe Holiday (How to Avoid Conversion Fees?)

Evening community,

I am heading overseas next year on a holiday and also to get married/elope.

I am reaching out to see what other users have used or if such a thing exists.

When purchasing say Airfare tickets and transport costs that are in Euros from an Australian bank account, is there a way to avoid the conversion fee that banks charge?

If no such thing is out there, what do you use to soften the blow in that regard?

Thanks in advance

  • Credit card with no transaction fees?

    • I have had a look but I am confused about the "conversion fee" vs the "transaction fee" or are they the exact same thing?

    • I had no idea about that link! Thanks:)

OZB should start a separate forum for how to avoid exorbitant band FX conversion fees/rates. Seems to be at least the same question asked every day.

    • As opposed to every other forum question that is also asked everyday?

        Not at all.
The FX conversion question is the most repetitious question asked and yet the person asking the question never seems to be capable (lazy?) to do their own basic research.

        • I have done my research, but why not use this forum as an outlet for more advice in case I am missing something?

I am also asking to be educated, but if you feel the need to spend time complaining about other users forum posts, have a look at your own posts that you have made which I am sure has been at one point or another repetitious yourself:)

Have a good night and thanks for no input whatsoever.

  • We just signed up to UP bank for an NZ trip next year :)

    Debit account so pretty low-fuss

    • So when you bought some things from Aus to NZ, what was the fee UP charged to convert?
(If you have made any purchases as yet)

      • Haven't yet (stupidly didn't do it until after booking one hotel who took 1 night's accom as deposit and commbank took a healthy amount as the fee)

        Free $10 tho

        • Yeah I have only booked hotels through Expedia which has been no payment required until the day.
So just thought I would ask before I purchased anything else that actually requires a payment now πŸ˜‚

No fee to convert, used it for two transactions for usd. Transaction rate was pretty spot on

Is it an arranged marriage you are flying over for?

      Thanks jv:)
πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Only took someone 4hrs and 52 mins.

No, no arranged marriage. We are just choosing to escape Melbourne for our day.

28d gives me a rate that's very close to the rates on Google (like if I search $1us to $1aud), it'll be less than a few dollars difference. None of that buy/sell stuff at the converters. Think it also gives some form of lounge access if your flight gets delayed and some crappy wifi service lol.

Used it all over Europe and citibank debit plus when I needed to withdraw some cash, also very similar to the google rates. Both are free cards

  • Yep.. 28 degrees credit card for purchases.. citibank plus debit card for purchases/atm withdrawals

  • I have a CC from Westpac who charge international fees and saving account from Comm bank who didn't. So i think its up to your bank!
