How Much Do DoorDash Drivers Get Paid?

I've seen that in the US, when people order, they have to nominate a tip up front.
Then the Dasher can reject the order if the tip is low…

But in Australia, I don't think there is the option to tip, so I think it works differently here.

When I order things, it might show the Delivery fee of $8.99 + Service fee of $3.30.
I'm just wondering how much the driver actually gets?

Shopping orders, like Coles, seem a bit more difficult as the Dasher has to go to the store and pick the items out.

** Do drivers get paid the same regardless of time/distance? Some places might be 8km from me, but then other places are only a few km.

What did they say when you asked them?

    as little as possible?

I did some delivering with DoorDash when I was staying in the city for a few weeks, I worked around Footscray - Williamstown in Melbourne primarily.
Generally during peak times at night, from 5 PM - 9 PM. This was about a month or two ago.

I averaged $28 - $31 per hour or less most times. Minus fuel and other expenses from that.
I spent a lot of time waiting on restaurants that were running behind, but I did get free food often surprisingly.
Never got any tips from any customers, I was always on time, as instructed, etc. Honestly don't know if DoorDash has this functionality or not. I know Uber Eats does.

Here is an example of a couple of Dashs that I completed.

Friday - Started at 5:33PM and finished at 10:07PM
Actively delivered for 4 hours, 9 minutes. Spent 4 hours, 34 minutes total. 11 deliveries. I earnt a total of $109.38.

Wednesday - Started at 7:01PM and finished at 8:22PM
Actively delivered for 1 hour, 19 minutes. Spent 1 hour, 21 minutes total. 5 delivers. I earnt a total of $41.85.

    • free food? how?

Happened on a couple of occasions, I would generally be stuck waiting on a customers order and I'd ask to purchase a drink/chips/etc and they just gave it to me for free. Not sure why, maybe it was because I wasn't being rude and inpatient?

    • So you get about $8 to $10 for a delivery?

      • Just did some math over a bunch of deliveries as I was interested,

Average Hourly Rate actively doing deliveries: $28.77
Average Hourly Rate spent doing deliveries/waiting for deliveries: $25.87

        Min Delivery: $5.32
        Max Delivery: $17.57
        Average Delivery: $8.90

So saying $8 - $10 a delivery is about smack on, I did most of my deliveries when they were paying a bonus of $1.50, $2.00, $3.00 per delivery so that is worth noting.
I wish I kept track of the kilometers I traveled and time per job, that would be really fun.

It's also worth noting that during peak times I never had to really wait around for orders, the majority of wait time was because I was scheduled to work until 9/10PM and orders slowed down later into the night. I would start heading home, and that's included in the wait time because I couldn't clock off. From now on, if anyone asks me how much I earned my response will be about $28.00 per hour, probably more if you schedule in peak times better.

        • I wish I kept track of the kilometers I traveled and time per job, that would be really fun.

Try use google time line ?

      • Delivery income is proportionate to the distance that a driver has to travel to complete that drop off…

    • How much did you have to pay for petrol do you think? I would imagine 4 hours of petrol (although assume you didn't have the engine running for the whole time) would cost about $20 depending on your car?

Good question, and I honestly do not know how much fuel I was burning. I was driving a small Toyota Echo that averages about 5.5L/100KM, I think it would be pretty fair to estimate around $5.00 per hour for car expenses. Engine was running most of the time, usually a few minutes to pickup an order, and a minute or so once you drop off. It's all pretty fast paced, or at least meant to be.

You can't Tip on doordash Australia based on my extensive usage of the app.

The restaurant should charge the drivers a fee for loitering at the counter in the way of everyone else trying to get their food. Or another fee for them getting pissy when the food is not immediately ready for them to collect.

Its like they forget non delivery customers exist.

      I agree dude.

Visit Macca's at 10pm on a Friday and the majority of the store is filled with impatient and easily irritated food delivery dudes on their phones waiting to pick up their orders. Half are talking on their phones having to yell over the top of each other. Lord knows who they are calling at that hour.

I just want to grab my $2 big Mac and $1 large frozen coke and free chips from rewards and GTFO.

Well on the flip side most restaurants mismanage the order status on their tabs, they click on ‘order ready’ or forget to delay the pickup time for the delivery drivers.
Basically causing drivers to be promoted to pickup orders that haven’t even started cooking yet…
These drivers already work on the finer margins (okay) but having to wait needlessly like that would get anyone ‘irritated’.
It’s important to understand things from all possible angles..

      • +1

I can't say that I ever got angry while waiting on an order, but I can totally understand why someone would or feel irritated. I remember doing a $7.60 dollar delivery and having to wait over 45 minutes while the order was prepared. Something that should have been a ten minute job, took closer to an hour.

        • +1

Maybe that restaurant was rightly prioritising meals for those that were seated in the restaurant.

          • +2

@MS Paint: Do you not understand how order status works ?

As I have just explained above…Restaurants can and are supposed to alter the pickup times for drivers to show up and collect their orders.
Failure to do so is the restaurant’s fault and no one else’s…

          • +3

@MS Paint: Why is it rightly? People getting delivery are customers too and they're not paying a very high fee to be treated as second class customers

            • @ankti231: It’s alright
The man “just wants to grab my $2 big Mac and $1 large frozen coke and free chips from rewards and GTFO”

Mcdonalds should be rolling out the red carpet for him… F the drivers that have already been waiting there for half an hour.

            • +1

@ankti231: Because they made the effort to go out and enjoy the restaurants core business - Feeding seated customers.

              • @MS Paint:

                enjoy the restaurants core business
                Feeding seated customers.

It’s actually takeaway/pickup orders that customers place directly at the restaurants…
Coz it costs restaurants way more to entertain seated customers plus all their dramas/complaints etc

But don’t let me stop you from keep going and incorrectly telling us on how restaurants/delivery orders actually operate.

        • +1

It’s great that you didn’t but that makes you an exception to the general human nature and not the norm.. Coz as you have just said, a driver having to wait for that long just because of the restaurant’s incompetence is plain infuriating and then you have customers ^^ that can’t help but judge you..

What adds to this problem is the fact that these drivers can’t even cancel such delivery orders as the app reprimands you for having more than a couple of cancellations.

    • +1

      lol.. it's a lose/lose for everyone there.

The drivers should charge the restaurant for having to loiter at the counter.

You make it sound like the drivers like to wait around unpaid.

  • I've seen that in the US, when people order, they have to nominate a tip up front.

I know their tipping culture but why would they need a tip?

They are getting paid a prescribed amount for the delivery.

    • +2

I have no idea.. maybe in the US the prescribed amount is very low.

      • Yeah they get requests that pay as low as $2 for a delivery over there.
