Heat Pump Hot Water Systems - Steibel Eltron

I've been researching hot water systems for my new house and have been reading up on the environmentally friendly and efficient "heat pump" units. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with these units in their homes. The allure of getting off gas and reducing energy bills are enticing but I also wanted to make sure that the units are reliable and I can ensure I always have a hot shower - otherwise the wife will kill me.

I've come across these Steibel Eltron units that look quite pretty good: https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/stiebel-eltron-w…

Since starting my research I've also triggered all of the google and instagram ad bots and am getting inundated with lots of $0 install hot water units thanks to government rebates - I did my research on those units (Eco Alliance?) and looks like those aren't as…..reliable.

Hoping there are some other Ozbargainers who have also gone through this recently, would love to chat!

Thanks

  • My biggest concern is the warranty. One year seems not enough for such an expensive how water system.

    • i wouldn't worry about warranty, under consumer law they are still liable to fix it even after warranty. if the consensis is that a hot water tank should last 8 years they are basically liable to fix it for that time.

All very well in theory but good luck with 8 years 'warranty' from a Heat Pump HWS.

If it was that reliable, they would be offering at least 3 years.

They are much more complex than a simple gas or electric HWS.

They are much more complex than a simple gas or electric HWS

True, but they are only equally as complex as your fridge or freezer.

          • @Switchblade88: fridges and freezer have been around for over 100 years, heat pump HWS less so..

Just look at the number of complaints online about them.

  • mine has been good so far, only had it for about 2 months though

  • I wanted the Steibel but the builder wouldn't put it in.

Ended up with the Midea/Chromagen 280L system and am happy with it.

Their paint on the rain shield isn't the best but it's been working fine for 3 years now, set it's timer up so it only heats during the day using solar :)

    • Same same :)

Same model cuz of builder limitations, been 3 yrs, on timer using solar.

  • Check out the reviews, especially the current ones and before you buy ring up the plumber you want to use and ask them if they will install it and what they think and would they buy it or a different one for their house.

Steibel Eltron units that look quite pretty good

Honestly these are pretty crappy units. They are loud and often breakdown outside of warranty requiring costly repairs which are not covered by the maker even under consumer rights. Steibel Eltron fights these out of warranty repairs to the death.

Buy another brand. Jump on to fangbook and have a read of the posts on My Efficient Electric Home (MEEH) group about different types of units.

If you want the best, Reclaim or Sanden heat pump hot water are the top picks.

    • Wow thank you for sharing this group!

  • I have a Steibel that's been going strong since I inherited in 2019. Was installed in ~2014; don't know if the previous owner ever had issues. Sounds like it could be a case that newer models have been value engineered to point where they are designed to work better taking up space in a landfill than to do what they were designed for.

  • There is one system with a Japanese compressor using CO2 as a medium. Long warranty, a soluton to last!

    • Are you able to share the brand?

Sanden or Reclaim, there could be more. Just google.
Upgrade to a stainless steel tank costs a bit but lasts!

We had a Hydrotherm DYNAMIC/X8 installed a few months ago, has a 6 year warranty. Was around $2500 supply and install in western Sydney.

    • thank you!

    • Which supplier / installer please??

      • We used Hot H2o, no issues with the install & would use them again.

  • I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced both gas instantaneous and heat pump and noticed any major differences?

  • We have a Stiebel-Eltron, around 6 years old and so far no problems - they are German after all. Had a Quantum heat pump - Chinese built unit, it lasted 3 years before the tank rusted out …Terminal!. Just make sure to have the anode saver checked from time to time.

  • Best bang for buck is Hydrotherm x8, $1650 supply and install, in Victoria. 6 years parts and LABOUR (expensive) warranty.

Obviously Sanden and Reclaim is the best overall, but at $5k supply and install, its x3 as expensive but not x3 better and hence bad value compared to hydrotherm.

Stay away from stiebel, its garbage.

    • That sounds like good pricing. Supplied and installed by whom?

      • Gavin, from Melbourne heat pumps. Price of the units have increased by a few hundred since then. Better get in quick!
