Why Aren't Food Delivery Platforms Dead Yet?

They take 30% of revenue from small businesses, and they also charge a delivery fee to customers. They pay the workers shit. They advertise rubbish like 'deliveroo plus' and 'uber pass', where you pay a subscription for 'free delivery'. Then they add a 'service fee'.

Stop using these and enriching tools like Elon Musk (insert any tech billionaire twit).

    • My mother is 98, very handicapped, nearly blind, lives alone.
On Sunday afternoon she realised that she would run out of milk before my brother would visit the next day.
Menulog delivered 2 litres for $12 within an hour.
For myself, I would not use them, only using the cheaper local take away home delivery service sparingly.
However, as my brother was not available Sunday afternoon, and I was 2 hours drive away Menulog saved me.
I don't mind paying the fees charged as I believe they are not overly excessive considering that my mum could have a cuppa or two, and her breakfast the next day.

  • They are making money other ways. I saw the other day on JB Hi-Fi you can order a new iPhone delivered in less than 90 minutes via UBER (certain areas only of course). Hah.

    • You can get chemist warehouse orders delivered via Menulog drivers. Its a godsend.

  • These apps were never ever really that cheap. $25 for a hamburger, chips and a coke is highway robbery.

  • Cheeseburger $21
    Service fee $18
    Delivery fee $10

    Total: $313

  • people are lazy

  • They do provide a good amount of employment though.

  • +1

As far as I'm concerned, if I can't order online reliably from a takeaway place, it doesn't exist. Just like expedia lets me filter hotels, uber eats/deliveroo do as well, and make it easy to find options.

I have had so many issues with delivery though, that I've taken to checking deliveroo/eats for whats around, and then ordering directly through their website if they have one. Screw calling for takeaway.

I've also ordered delivery for a cafe 400m away when hungover or feeling unwell before.

It's probably not something we deserve.

  • Simple, they are not dead because there's a market for it
    - Customers: People buying
    - Labour Market: People working there (despite the complaints)

    No one's forcing participants …so that's it.

  • Some people who can afford it will pay for the convenience. This is especially true when very busy perhaps a couple times a week. Time is money sort of thing.

  • Just load up yuor freezer with easily re-heatable foods so when u r feeling lazy, its a quick and easy meal, compared to placing a $45 order for a simple burger + the 1 hour wait time (and cold food in the end)

A lot of international students work for it since they can't get normal job more than 20 hours due to visa restrictions?

    1. People still order despite being more expensive
    2. Drivers still accepting the jobs even pay is almost charity.

A lot of restaurants have priced their menu higher in the platform for customers to absorb the percentage that Uber gets from them.

  • I pay for uber pass! my work gives me a monthly uber eats credit so i use it basically every day for lunch or dinner. Sure, you pay a premium but depends what you value your time worth as

  • "ADHD tax"

  • Deliveroo has just announced they've been placed into administration and will no longer be taking any orders.

  • Wow this guy called it a bit over a week before it happened hah.

So they push massively discounted gift cards together with free membership to Deliveroo Plus to basically everyone and then exit scam us. Nice.

    • I have to give a positive mention to Menulog.
1 month ago I placed an order for my 98 year old mother who is heavily handicapped and lives alone.
I have had Menulog deliveries to her recently and it worked out OK.
This time the driver did not ring her, and left the hot food delivery at the bottom of the steps that she cannot negotiate without much pain due to her handicap.
He was supposed to ring her and hand the delivery to her when she opened the door.
She had to struggle alone for a long time to get down and back up the steps.
      The food rapidly became cold.
Over the next 2 weeks there was lots of argument between myself and Menulog head office.
Eventually, they gave a full refund after only wanting to give $10.
At least they finally admitted their error, and they made amends.

      • Not exactly a positive mention lol

  • Yeah, the reason most people pedal out for why they use food delivery apps is they "didnt feel like cooking" - if i feel like that, i just eat a bowl of cereal or some toast or something…
