Any good deal for Laptop Ram?

My 1 year old laptop recently becomes slow. I reinstalled the system one week ago, but still slow. I am planning to upgrade the slow HD to SSD, meanwhile i also want to add 4 gb ram into it and make the total ram 8gb.

the question is where i can find the good deal for 4 gb laptop ram?

  • As usual, MSY.

if there is no particular good deal around, i may check out the ultimo shop.

  • Why is it slow i wonder? maybe save a few dollars, do a backup and reload the system from the recovery cd's

Other things to do, run a virus scan. Update widows and do a defrag. Check you have free space on the hard drive it may be slow because there is little space left.

    • i did. my guess is hd issue. or maybe the laptop is dying….

      • what brand laptop?, some have diagnostics at boot up that can test the hard drive for you.

        • Toshiba.
i used CrystalDiskInfo to check the hd. it shows that there was only a issue of "reallocated sectors count". i googled it and found out it was not a real issue at this stage.

        • A reload is always recommended then if its still slow, upgrade hdd

        • Run a little program called SpinRite, that will give you detailed info about the HDD, and can repair a pretty wide range of issues.

        • thanks, i will try.

  • +3

There is no need to upgrade the RAM IMO.

Unless you use some really memory intensive applications, going beyond 4GB is not going to make any difference in terms of performance.

The SSD however will make a tremendous difference, and it's cheap as chips nowadays.

    • thanks. i am waiting for good deal for 240-256gb ssd ;P

    • Can you provide any document to back your statement as I am deciding whether i need to buy a 2gb or 4gb ddr3 1333 for my hp dm1 4108au? thanks

  • Staticice.com.au is a great shopping comparison site for PC bits. I just built a PC from bits bought mostly from mwave.com.au but I also found quite a few bits were cheaper from Amazon in the US as their international postage was very reasonable.

I also recommend trying Advanced System Care from Iobit to try out some diagnostics. There is a basic version with most of the functionality for free.

  • As others have said, RAM may not be your bottleneck.
If you go ahead with RAM upgrade make sure you have a 64-bit OS, and check your current RAM config (it may be 2 x 2GB instead of 1 x 4GB).
