Building My First Gaming Computer (Budget $1500)

I'm having a go at making my first gaming computer. I'm going to play first person shooters like CS:GO and TF2. I am wanting to find out if it all fits together physically before purchasing.
The specs are as follows:

CPU - AMD RYZEN 5 5600G $169

MB - MSI MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI Micro ATX AM4 $219

RAM - Kingston FURY Beast 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 $79

SSD - Western Digital Black SN750 SE 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME $132

HDD - Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive $69

GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12G GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB $579

CASE - Thermaltake S100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case $89

PSU - Silverstone DA650 Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX $119

OS - Microsoft Windows 10 Home Retail - Download 32/64-bit $189

Thanks!

Looks good, i would check that case and make sure each part physically fits, especially the GPU. Windows 10 can be found cheaper online, they steal all your data anyway and sell it to the highest bidder. You've put together a good list for a budget build!

    • There's something on github that can activate Windows for free.

    • Yeah thanks a lot for that. I've starting looking into potentially more suitable cases. Also if you had any recommendations for windows that would be greatly appreciated.

You could get away playing those games, maxed out, on a build 1/3 the price

    • I'm keeping price in mind but I want a strong build that's going to last me a few years before thoughts of upgrading it at all.

  • +1

If you want, you can get OS keys for alot cheaper online than getting retail, completely up to you though!

    • On a related question, I got a new Asus laptop that came with Windows 11 Home, is it possible to download a Windows 10 copy and use the same key that came with the laptop? Dislike the new Windows 11 layout/start button.

      • A licence should be automatically linked and recgonised to your Microsoft account.

        • Thanks, actually on this note I went with a local account not Microsoft account registration on Win 11 setup because I didn't want my folders to be my Outlook email name. Is the Windows key tied to the laptop? What if I upgrade my SSD/RAM in the laptop in future?

    • yeah thanks for the input. I'd really love, if you any ideas for sites for cheaper windows keys, as $189 is a hefty price.

  • Looks good to me. Just be aware you'll most likely need to do a BIOS flash of the motherboard for it to be able to support the CPU. Easy enough to do with a USB drive.

Only thing I would possibly change is the case as it has pretty poor airflow. It only has one 120mm fan in the rear as stock. The front of the case is also not designed with airflow in mind. Ways to work around it - maybe two extra fans on the top as exhaust for a negative pressure set-up. But then that'll add costs and could put other cases for in for consideration.

Then again, this set-up won't be creating too much heat so it's not a big deal.

  • seems not bad! just remember if its your first one, dont go all out, you dont want to be spending all this money on a rig and all you do is look at ozb and facebook. and if it does work out and you love it, upgrade parts.

    • Yeah that's fair but I'm pretty keen on getting a reliable setup that will last me a couple of years. The pricing is actually pretty reasonable; I expected I'd be paying much higher prices for what I had my sights set on.

  • Are you playing any more intensive titles or just those?

  • Why the 5600G with an integrated GPU if you're going to put a GPU in it?

    I also thought that the 5600G doesnt support PCIe 4 - but a 5600 or 5600X will

PCIe 4 is for 4k++, way beyond a 3060, 5600G has the GPU backup which is useful for fault finding if its not a large price increase. Im not sure but i don't think 5600/x is much more and might offer some better performance.

Future proofing a budget build isn't really possible, you will replace everything next upgrade anyway.

    • Yeah it does seem a bit strange of a choice but the pricing for the 5600G is much better than the 5600 and the 5600x. I spent a bit of time looking into saving on these models of CPU and they all have a fairly similar price whereas the 5600G has a good deal, that's all.

$1455 (without OS) is a bit steep for that build.

You could get something similar prebuilt for $979 or a decent 1440p machine for $1298.
You can request the parts be shipped in their boxes if you want to build it yourself.

  • Hi guys on a related question, I got a new Asus Flow X16 (with 3060) laptop and am thinking of getting a second 2TB SSD for the second SSD slot.

Is the Western Digital Black SN750 PCIe 4.0 a good brand? I see that its sequential read speeds up to 3,600MB/s, but my Asus X16 existing SSD and most gaming websites recommended SSDs are sequential read speeds 5000-6000MB/s? Hence I was looking to get the Crucial P5 Plus 2TB for $326 or Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 for $379 on Amazon now. I game CSGO/COD/Battlefield. Thoughts? Thanks.

For an O/S drive it would be different, but for just a secondary/game drive, I don't think you would notice much difference between the cheapest and most expensive drives out there.

I would just go for the cheapest name brand drive in the size you need.

change the cpu to a 5600.

    • allkeyshop has windows keys for $2

Get a 2TB SSD instead and ditch the HDD
