Solar Quotes Advice - SA

Hi All,

Looking at getting solar installed but not sure which road to go down re inverters and price.

It's a townhouse with an existing system, so quotes seem to be a bit more due to the lift and removal.

Quote 1 - 8.8k :

Sungrow Residential SG8K-D
Jinko Solar Tiger Pro JKM415M-54HL4 (415W) × 25
Sungrow Consumption Meter

Company been around 10 years, 4.8 100+ reviews on solar quotes and 5/5 on Google. In house installers.

Quote 2 8.5k :

Risen 415w Mono Perc (RIS-RSM40-8-415M) × 24
Growatt MIN 8000TL-X 8kw
Growatt Smart Meter SDM120CT- MA

4.5 78 reviews on solar quotes, 4.8 google, 10 years doing solar. In house installers.

I've had other quotes for better spec stuff but all around 11 - 13k, out of budget. We don't plan on living here over 5 - 6 years, so we aren't too stressed with longevity.

I'm leaning towards quote 1, from what I can understand the panels and inverter are slightly higher quality/brand - keen to know too if the prices seem good.

Thanks!

Q1 seems good in the current environment (and townhouse installation) with respectable panels and invertor.

it'll take 5-6 years for you to break even on the initial capital

    • hopefully because we both work from home, majority of solar will be consumed and reduce the break even time (hoping)

As soon as you understand the panel / inverter and are happy with what you want, get multiple quotes from different installers. Then pick one with good reviews / quality installation and show them a cheaper quote you received to knock off further $$$. For a 6.6kW system my chosen installer reduced the original quote by $1000 (was already competitive before that).

Avoid Growatt, they are cheap and nasty. You can read about bad (long term) experiences online. My friend's Growatt just died after 4 years. Good luck!

  • All the same. Its following the basics thats important. Put the panels in full sun (all of them, if one is shaded..they are all shaded). Give the inverter no sun. Heat kills electronics.

I have Qcell panels with an SMA inverter. Also have Leepton panels with a Growatt inveter.

The Qcells failed ("German quality" as they say) . The membrane underneath fell apart. Both inverters working perfect. I added PC fans to the heatsink on both, using a small $10 solar panel from ebay to power them. If the sun is bright, they run fast …and cool more. When there is no sun, they stop..simple!

    • all should be in full sun and inverter in the garage :) thank you

  • Hi gamblor80,
can you please put the links for the companies? because I am looking to install solar panels but am not sure which company I need to go with

I went with Goliath Electrical. They did a really awesome job, reasonably priced. They use a range of inverters and solar panels. Worth a quote.

      • Thanks :)

  • I would be asking for more quotes. Quotes seem quite high for a budget inverter with those brand panels you mentioned.

    DQ electrical https://www.dqelectrical.com.au/ managed to beat a quote I got from another electrical company of $8450 to which they ended up beating it by $100 which bought the final price down to $8350 (which I have accepted and paid a deposit for) for the following;

26 x TSM-390DE09.08 390 Watt Panels (Trina Solar Co., Ltd.)
    1 x Primo 8.2-1 (Fronius)

    https://www.solarquotes.com.au/installer-review/dq-electrica…

They got very good reviews from many happy customers

  • Solar is obviously popular. There’s been a post like this near everydaysince the budget

  • RAA solar quoted me -

16 x Trina TSM-415NEG9.28, Trina Vertex S+ TSM-415NEG9.28 solar panels rated at 6.64 kW DC output
1 x SolaX X1-5.0-T-D/N solar inverter rated at 5 kW AC output
Installed with mounting system and protection devices
    Energy monitoring system
    $5,999.

I ended up getting from a different company. Ausgem dual glass 16 x 415 Watt Panels (AG-OS-108N-415) 30% extra power gain vs ordinary panels, Fronius Primo Gen24 5kw inverter with PV point and Fronius smart meter. I’ll have 3kw of power during blackout as long as sun is shining. $6700 installed, cash. Payment plans available but will cost a bit more.
