I was planning to visit Melbourne in Jan 2023 for three weeks roughly. I'm looking for reasonably good and affordable accommodation for an adult and two kids under 12. I did look into Air BnB but I would love to see if there are any good deals for hotels.
Do any folks have anything to share?

This will be the killer. In Melbourne CBD prices will push $3-350pn even for the usual cheap places.
Not a great time to spend 3 weeks there 😐
Booking.com etc ?
use booking.com as a guide, and then call up directly the hotel and see if they'll match it
Alternatively, try using a VPN to another country and see if the price changes on booking aggregate sites
Or even just try their site directly, even if it means creating a free member account etc. Most these days seem to offer members cheaper rates than the other sites, without having to call
Got a sweet deal on a nice place in Ballarat doing that.
Has using a VPN worked for you before? I've considered this but wouldn't know what country to look from.
I would have thought that the hotel rates would be the same regardless of where you book? Could be wrong.
Consider staying a bit further out than the CBD but close to a train station
Might consider close to a tram line as well.
I usually stay at the best western atlantis in southbank it's only a short walk from southern cross station and there's a tram stop just outside

LOL not happening…. Jan is school holidays + Australian Open is on. No 'cheap' deals around.
Shopback has 11% cashback on booking.com today. Better than paying full price.
Australian Open is the last 2 weeks of January. Not sure there will be too many deals at this time, a good deal might be an available place. Or might be better to book a couple of places and explore different areas.
