  • I'm boycotting bigW since they introduced their shifty $15 lay-by fee…

    https://www.bigw.com.au/payment/layby/layby-terms-and-condit…

    • I didn't know anyone still did lay-by. Why not just use Afterpay or something?

      • -1

my partner used it for xmas presents for heaps of the family's kids when shit goes on special, aint worth it now with the fees.

Beside the point anyway, should be a free service..

          Tough audience

What is it that makes you believe it should be a free service?

It clearly has a significant cost to their business.

People put stuff they can't afford on layby (often when it's on special). That process in itself takes more staff time than a different customer purchasing it.

Then, the store has to store the stuff.

Then, more staff time is used when the customer makes payments off their layby. Seemingly (based on my time stuck in queues behind them) often without having brought their identification or receipt or just trying to wangle not making the repayments. Or even getting the staff to go and get the items so they can check which ones they want to keep and which ones to cancel.

Then, they often just want to cancel it and the staff have to put it back on the shop floor. Only problem is it's been x months and they no longer stock that item so it just has to go on a random clearance location.

Either the customers using the service have to pay for it or we all do.

@chewbot: Tell me you’re young without saying so.

@FredAstair: 45 and becoming more and more of a "grumpy old man" every day!

              • @chewbot: Ah.So it’s just the grumpy man syndrome shining through.
                That makes sense now.

          • @chewbot: Because lay away is designed to make people spend more that they have.
            Simple marketing trick.

Big W's way of saying "Welcome to the 20s… The 2020s that is!"
As already mentioned, there's plenty of other options available across the retail sector for consumers nowadays. (Payment services, loan services, credit card services. Worst case, there's even that centuries old method called savings!)
You can't blame retailers for wanting to minimise losses or not carry unnecessary debt. How many of you would be happy selling something new on eBay or Marketplace and having to hold it for a few months?

@Snoop: Things like afterpay and zip pay can get people in a lot of trouble with debt.
Sure laybuy might seem redundant these days but personally if I was advising a person that has trouble with money I would tell them to stay clear of after pay lenders.

            • @treeman: I'd just advise a person that has trouble with money to stay clear of unnecessary purchases altogether. ;)

              • @Snoop: Not all laybuy purchases would be unnecessary.

Just because you personally don’t know anyone who does, doesnt mean a lot of people don’t tbh.
