Will this be good for my MacBook pro 2017 ?

  • +2

Tempting but I'd prefer 2K at 144Hz and above. But still not a bad deal for 4K at 28" on an IPS panel.

    • Why?

      • +9

Because refresh rate is more important if gaming?

4k optimally is 32' imo. 28 a bit small for native text unless scaling imo.

        • Thanks for the explanation.

I am after a new monitor but not sure what to get. I think I'll wait for the black Friday sales.

          • +2

            @Korban Dallas: For non-gaming I would prefer 4K.
            I have 3x27" at home: 4K 60Hz, 2K 144Hz, and 2K 60Hz. Couldn't see any difference between the latter two.
With the 4K one, MacOS gives me a lot more estate.
            Maybe Windows will be different

          • +1

@Korban Dallas: 144Hz is much smoother for gaming than having 4k at 27". I've got both.

4K is also much better at 27" as the scaling is better, way too small at 27", but the resolution is nice if you don't like seeing pixels.

If for gaming if you can get 2k144hz at 32" which is what I use mainly, but it's not nice for desktop work as text is a bit blurry due to less pixels.

        • Exactly right. Also it helps squeezing a bit more out of my RTX3060 in my Acer Nitro 5 due to not having MUX Switch.

I personally had these for about a year. Got them for $500 at that time of purchase. Really recommended at this price point. Solid build quality with sharp display quality.

    • +1

Solid build quality with sharp display quality.

But Sam sung that it wasn't a Sharp display

    • I've had 2 of these for just over 18 months, bought with an eBay Afterpay special for $303 each. No complaints from my end.

    • +4

Because you haven’t provided any explanation of why we shouldn’t?

      • Lol i love this comment

        • +2

some people dislike the 'top brands' since they think the price and name isnt worth the quality

to my way of thinking if you have a samsung at $350 and you have competing lesser brands at $350 like aoc or dahua (LOL) then really… go with samsung

and this is from someone who has a dahua 32

          • @tonyjzx: facts! samsung owns a lot of top teir quality teach and computer parts.

Yeah I believe most are just salty, sometimes top brands do suck but in this instance samsung is pretty solid imo

          • +1

@tonyjzx: AOC have been making fantastic quality screens for a very long time, they are in no way a lesser brand than samsung in the monitor space in anything other than public perception.

            • @lordezekiel: i get that… that's why i run a dahua

but i dont pretend that people think its anywhere near a like samsung

as the marketing people would say, perception is everything

if you care about resale, dahua and aoc has none… samsung has it most

This or wait for Dell to have a good sale again? Need 2 monitors to hook up to MacBook Pro (2021) for home office and struggling to work out what to go with.

    • +6

      The struggle is real.

      • I really don't know what to do haha I like the convenience of the USB C ones but also this seems like a very good deal for 4k with a decent brand

        • +5

Easily wait for a deal on the S2722QC and get two of those. USB-C in that setup scenario is a way better proposition.

          • @bargaineer: I thought this too but like USB-c to HDMI cables are relatively cheap so in a sense what's the difference?

            • @djthornton: i doubt you can daisy chain usbc to hdmi but then… bit of an edge case feature

            • +1

@djthornton: USB-C charges the MacBook, so no need to have a charger plugged in and getting tangled up under you desk.

USB-C gives you a USB hub on the bottom of the monitor, which means you can plug a webcam in and mount it on top of the monitor very cleanly.

Plus no more dongles, you can plug everything else into the USB ports on each of the monitors.

The feeling of getting back to your desk and plugging in 1 (or in your case 2) USB-C cables and everything just working + having a clean slick desktop free of cables and dongles is awesome.

              • @bargaineer: Also I forgot, you also avoid all the stupid compatibility issues with 4K 60hz and HDMI that goes with that territory too.

Even if you go USB-C to DisplayPort, you still hit weird quirks where sometimes things don’t work or fallback to 30hz instead of 60hz.

USB-C is just well sorted and seemless.

                • @bargaineer: This is super helpful, thank you! I'll wait for the s2722qc's!

    • +1

Wait for Dell USB-C monitor discounts which save you a hundred dollar for the high quality docking station.

    • The Sammy is certainly a very good price for the display, but I really like my Dell U2723QE.

It has a really good dock with multiple ports, better connectivity choices (90W charging USBc, two DP, and HDMI) and of course as u series the IPS display is factory colour calibrated, it’s much brighter (400 nits), the blacks are better etc. and the KVM features are quite easy to set up.
I think the display is actually the latest LG and has this feature called black technology that supposed to make the blacks, well blacker.

On the downside, it is also RRP $918 though, but I was able to get 20% student discount through daughter.

There is an 4K S series that is cheaper, but it has less power via USBc and isn’t calibrated, no DisplayPort other than the USBc, screen is more typical 4K screen brightness, and the software to manage KVM won’t work on a Mac.

I think you need G series for higher refresh rates and 4K.

60hz refresh rate? I'm no refresh rate fanboy, but do yourselves a favor any buy something a little faster if you value future resale.

    • +2

the problem will be unless you go with gaming units you arent gonna get 4k at 75hz for anything like $350…

    • +4

For 4K monitors like those, you're looking towards the $1000 mark not $350.

And those monitors don't have amazing resale value when they face competition from HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz TVs

You can fairly easily sell a 4K 60Hz monitor on FB Marketplace for $250 a year after you've bought it. If you've bought a $1400 4K 144Hz Gaming monitor, you'll be lucky to see $900 out of it 12 months later.

  • Any 4K 120/144/165Hz deals? Need a 4K monitor with high refresh rate to go with the 4090.

    • +9

      Get a fire extinguisher too

      • +4

        damn son what a humblebrag

also take out fire and theft cover

        • Took out a home loan to afford a 4090, dont think I'd have enough for a fire extinguisher of any sorts after I blow the rest of my savings on a monitor to go with it.

Heads up for anyone wanting to use this with a VESA mount - take a look at the circular cut-out on the back. Most VESA plates won't fit inside there. You can look online about all the 3rd party hacks people have had to do to mount this monitor. Completely unnecessarily stupid design ruining an otherwise decent budget 4k monitor. Samsung just placed the VESA holes with no thought and marketed it as a VESA compatible monitor

    • Yep I had to use offsets on my vesa mount to fit mine.

    • You saved me making an expensive mistake as I wanted to buy these and mount them.

      • I was able to mount it with the North Bayou mounts listed on ozb previously. It wasn't flush with the back, but its held up well for years. In summary, you'll probably be fine

  • IPS or VA panel for gaming?

    • A few years ago it would be VA for refresh rates and IPS for colour but IPS are faster now. Go for an IPS I say, make sure it's good quality though and depends on your budget and the type of games.

  • +1

I have a 27" 4K Dell. I set the resolution scale to 175% so things aren't too small and holy hell, things look absolutely beautiful.

  • I have one of these, had it since the start of the year. It’s a good monitor with a very good picture. But I haven’t used any other 4K monitors. I use it daily for wfh.

I was a little disappointed by the quality/feel of the monitor case, it creaks a bit and feels slightly cheap. But it is cheap so. And the user interface lacks a bit, the single joystick control isn’t great. The LCD panel seems good though and I’m happy with it for that. It’s really clear, bright, dark blacks and good contrast. I use scaling (125% maybe? Or 150%). Text looks great, smooth and rounded.

I don’t think you can go wrong for the price. I would love a 75Hz 4K though.

  • Is this good enough for gaming maybe with a PS5 ?

    • No hdmi 2.1

    • The cheapest 4k 120hz monitor is Dell g3223q. But this isn't a bad deal if you want 4k60, and for that you don't need hdmi 2.1 anyway

      • Dell g3223q

That's what I'm looking at. It's either this or the Gigabyte M32U. Hope they drop to ~$800 during black friday.

    • Good enough - yes: It is 4k and 60hz.

Is it the best - no. But it will be a good option if you're not after HDR and 120hz.

  • I've got this, but my laptop only goes to 30hz refresh. Is this normal?

I've got a AMD Radeon TM graphics card (internal DAC 400HMZ)
