"the bird is freed" Elon Musk and Twitter

Elon Musk has seemingly been undecisive on whether he is wants to buy Twitter, but it now looks like that dilemma is over.
To avoid a trial, a judge ruled that Elon Musk had until October 28 to close his acquisition of Twitter. He has done so and is now the Chief Twit. He explains why he bought Twitter

Basically he says he wants to help humanity but doesn't want Twitter to be a "free-for-all hellscape" I guess there's Gab for that 😂

I wonder if this part of the reason why Paypal will start charging users(at least in the US) a USD $2,500 fee per violation of its Acceptable Use Policy which includes misinformation?

No account reinstatements yet, but is there any account that OzBargainers are looking forward to be reinstated?

Title is a quote from the Chief Twit's twitter.

This is going to cause an existential crisis for some nutters. On one hand, Lord Musk will let them have hate free speech on Twitter but on the other hand he makes EVs.

    • +2

Sure there can be a bad apple from any groups but valid arguments are not hate speech.

  • -1

Twitter will need to abide by EU regulation. Twitter is also the preferred platform for celebrities so Twitter will have to appease those celebrities to an extent. Would Musk support a guy like Trump during the next coup attempt though?

  • +6

Twitter was the type of place that will ban you for "misgendering" but not for promoting genocide, making terroristic !NUCLEAR! threats or committing genocide (e.g Putin, Medvedev, members of the Russian government and Russian propagandists all are allowed to have accounts!!!!!).
Musk can not realistically make it any worse!

    • -1

How bad must your life choices be to get banned for misgendering people. Especially given all the vaccine misinformation and conspiracy theories that go unchecked.

Lots of Nazi’s trying to push the limits now but still getting banned. But yes, Twitter was already shit and full of shit people. Banning one or two of them total never changed that.

      • +2

        >How bad must your life choices be to get banned for misgendering people.

How bad must a platform be to get banned for misgendering people.

Musk will try increase the profitability of Twitter and flip it.

Anyone who thinks this is a peak pivotal point in human history needs to get off the internet and get some fresh air.

Enjoy it while it lasts then.

Who is buying for more than he already overpaid?

      • Not sure about more than he paid, but he’ll probably sell to the richest man in the world….

  • +3

Don't care, the platform was a ****hole as it is and will probably continue to be. Social media is a cancer on society.

Regardless, I think Twitter is in such a peculiar spot after the elections that Elon Musk is not someone who is smart enough, or well-tempered enough, to make it work. His takes on Ukraine and Taiwan show a) he is terrible with nuance, and b) terrible at knowing when he doesn't know what he's talking about

    • +1

The problem with the rich/powerful etc is the dictator trap. They start out surrounded by people who tell them when they’re wrong, who they believe and they use that to make better/successful decisions, eventually their power leads them to be surrounded by people that agree with them no matter how bad the idea and they begin to believe their ideas are all good. That leads to them confidently making bad decisions to hasten their own downfall.

Elon seemed to try and stop this by actually asking people to disagree with him, but given he basically fired people who did, he still seems to have fallen into the trap.

  • +6

"His takes on Ukraine and Taiwan show a) he is terrible with nuance, and b) terrible at knowing when he doesn't know what he's talking about."

You mean like getting submarines into narrow passageways and tunnels?

    • +3

Lol another great example. Shame on him for that too - after watching The Rescue (good documentary about Thai cave rescue) I had an even bigger appreciation for how much of an idiot Elon is sticking his ignorant opinions out

  • +3

Twitter had potential to be used for good to begin with, but ended up being mostly abused by people in 1st world countries to bitch and moan about trivial matters, police people over language, cultural appropriation..etc just to virtue signal and start online witch hunts. It is essentially a platform for smug (profanity)wits that think their shitty opinions matter (both on the left AND right side of politics).

Is Elon buying it to do good? No, not initially atleast. This was probably another marketing/attention generating ploy like every one of his usual shenanigans, that's what he does best. His main complaint was that twitter had many fake users, but so do most social apps. He's is not naive and wanted to back out after he got the attention he wanted. People keep forgetting that this is the same man that said dogecoin was the future.
He was forced to buy it in the end, so there's a chance he may double down on his promises. Firing top execs was a good start atleast.

  • The funny thing is that if they went to school together, Trump the bully would have beaten Musk the bully victim up, and got him to do all his homework.

    • +2

Trump would have been the rich kid with tiny hands. Elon the awkward nerd. They'd both get beat up in most public schools.

  • +3

    LOL @ Paypal's attempt at a $2500 "Wrong Think" fine…?

What on earth were they thinking. They wiped out a chunk of their entire company value because of that decision. Utter morons.

  • +1

Social media heavily influences the outcome of elections, especially in the US. Anything affects the US affects the world, unfortunately. When all the social media tilts one direction it's never a good thing. I think Musk buying twitter makes the scale to balance a bit better. So the left or right doesn't go extreme operating in their own eco chamber. Hoping for a good natural equilibrium of policies and laws where people are safe, comfortable and the quality of life increases.

  • +2

Ill subscribe to OF before i have a twitter account. Aat least you get to watch something on OF… twitter is like listening to everyones opinion on things that i dont give a crap about.

  • I have to think what perfect timing it is for Musk to finally be in the position to give Trump back what he always wanted, his Twitter account, at the same time Nancy Pelosi's husband is almost killed by someone who is almost certainly a fanatical Trump supporter who was undoubtably trying to murder Nancy. Trump saying something stupid and probably illegal about this on Twitter is just the kind of thing that should get Trump banned. The best case scenario for Musk and Trump is for Musk to give Trump his account back and Trump having the willpower to never use it and stick to his Truth platform instead. Probably what will happen is Trump does use it because he thinks it'll give him the reach needed to become President again, despite most men his age already being so old that they are dead (if you look at the life expectancy at birth for the year Trump was born). We're just lucky that Trump isn't rich enough to influence Musk, though if Trump became President again then I'm sure he would be able to help make Musk billions, maybe more than the 10 billion he just lost from buying Twitter.

The real world is insane. It's like Game of Thrones level of implausibility and chaos.

    • Life expectancy at birth is the sort of thing people use to spread vaccine misinformation. It’s meaningless, once you’ve outlasted all those who died young you can be expected to live much longer than average. Trump’s wealth probably gives him a higher life expectancy again (and his position probably saved him from Covid), but his weight less so.

Cognitive decline however is clearly on display, for both of the last election’s candidates.

      • +1

I think Elon is a fairly principled guy at heart, and he really does want to make the world a better place.

He's not perfect, nobody is, but I can't think of anyone better to buy out twitter.

The censorship on twitter, and other social media in general, is waaaay out of control.

I read a tweet from Snowden which I think sums it up perfectly…

    https://twitter.com/Snowden/status/1585956054680363008

Any decision must be made in the end by either a human or a machine. We know machines do a bad job, so we're stuck with humans. The question then is which human decides what you are allowed to read: an unaccountable suit, or you?

Conclusion from that point is straightforward.

Which human decides what you are allowed to read? - just think about that…

If Elon can follow through, like I know he will, this could be a real turning point.

    • -1

Let’s take it a little slow. I don’t wanna wake up pregnant.

    • -5

There should be censorship, you shouldnt be able to spew out hate into any void, even a shitty one like twitter

If you think otherwise, youre probably part of the problem….

      • +1

Who is the arbiter of hate though. Which human decides what you are allowed to read?

Your pro-censorship view above could easily be construed as quite hateful and offensive to some people. Should you also be deleted then?

        • -1

How is arguing for protection against hate, spreading hate, i see your logic and its failing you badly….

You seem to like the idea of America, and their "freedom chanting"….

          • You do realise America is a failed democracy

            • -1

@trapper: so you hate censorship but want to ban anyone who doesnt agree with you?

i think you need to visit a dictionary

Still who needs twitter when its obvious theres trolls alive and well on here, and some very Trumpist ones at that. Please immediately go and live in that failed democracy you seem to have a hunger for…

              • -1

@[Deactivated]: I'll add the /s now in case the sarcasm wasn't immediately obvious…

                /s

                There you go.

    • -3

"The question then is which human decides what you are allowed to read: an unaccountable suit, or you?"

That's an easy question to answer in your case comrade Snowden - Putin decides.

    • -1

How about no ‘which human’ how about a jury of your peers, the same as the entire basis for society to exist at all?

There’s a difference between not being allowed to read something and having it amplified anonymously. Once upon a time people had free speech but also we knew who they were and spreading misinformation was harder and less profitable, and with consequences for your reputation.

If you want free speech, people need to put their reputation on the line. If it’s that important to not be censored, you’d better believe what you say.

Ultimately people are bad at making decisions, but we let people make most of them anyway, but what when you make bad decisions that hurt others? That’s why individuals have never been able to alway do what they want.

Twitter has its purpose although its very small and limited.

It is still one of the best ways to get a quick concise overview of the happenings happening around a company or website.

Discord has slowly taken over that recently with having a news channel or follow feed now but you still have to know the discord server to get that.

Twitter has obviously got a lot of controversy and garbage on the platform but hopefully it can be cleaned up and used for the good it was meant to be used for like live news feeds of world events around the world.

Currently only YouTube and news websites are good at that but Twitter has potential to be used for just important information again and not mindless discussions among real life trolls.. We still have 4chan for that.

So yeah I hope Elon Musk steers Twitter to some good and do a good in house clean up and set up auto moderator bots to keep the platform useful and clean.

It is still one of the best ways to get a quick overview of surface level events of a company or product or project or whatever and like I said already world news and events.

No other platforms can really achieve that besides YouTube and some Facebook pages.

You (profanity) up real good, kiddo.

Twitter is a disaster clown car company that is successful despite itself, and there is no possible way to grow users and revenue without making a series of enormous compromises that will ultimately destroy your reputation and possibly cause grievous damage to your other companies.

    • +4

Press barons and media moguls of the past and present are no different.

      • Most of them didn’t overpay so much for a poisoned chalice basically. They were unashamedly in it for themselves, this is definitely not in his interest and won’t be in the interests of people who think it’s in theirs either.

    • I'm not saying this is right, but information, and propaganda, has always been disseminated by the very wealthy. Rupert, Zuckerberg, Bezos, Bloomberg, Buffet, Google owners, and now Elon. They're the ones who are telling us what's real and what isn't, what we can and can't say or think.

  • +4

Elon is in an interesting predicament.

He bought twitter at the valuation it had 7 months ago. Social media companies have been majorly devalued this year. Facebook stock has dropped 70% (around 600 billion) since the start of the year for example.

Reasons for this are many, but the biggest current obstacle which cant be removed is that iphone and android have stopped allowing apps to harvest users data willy nilly, meaning adverts cant be as targeted as well as they used to be, meaning way less revenue from advertisers. The golden age is over in that regard.

Then there are the advertisers them selves. They are extremely picky about who they spend their advertising dollars with. So if twitter stops moderating certain content like Musk has said it will, then Advertisers will stop advertising on twitter due to social pressure (look at how quickly Kanye is being dropped by his partners).

The next hurdle is that Europe are bringing in new social media laws (The DSA and DMA) relating to social media moderation, bullying, abuse, mis-information, elections etc.. with really heavy penalties (6% of the companies revenue) if companies break those laws. While the platform is majority US based, loosing the EU market just so you can have lax moderation tools means the platform is shrinking.

The idea that people will pay to be on twitter is a hard sell. Premium/paid social media accounts have been tried before without much success. You're basically paying for certain social media features and privacy.

So he has bought a platform where 90% of the income is from advertising, advertising revenue is dropping because of increasing phone security and reduced advert spending. He wants to stop moderation which is in direct conflict with how the platform makes money via advertising, and is also going to become the target of new European laws if it doesn't moderate responsibly. Subscription based social media is a hard sell.

No idea what the future holds but I dont think twitter is going to see much growth over the next year. It might gain more right leaning users and become some sort of foxnews like echo chamber, but most current users are left leaning, and will leave the platform if that happens.

He does have the power to do what he wants with the platform though. No longer beholden to preforming for the share-market, meaning he is free to take as many risks as he wants to build something new. Not sure why you would spend billions buying the twitter audience if you were going to completely change the platform though. Users hate change.

    • +1

Social media companies have been majorly devalued this year. Facebook stock has dropped 70% (around 600 billion) since the start of the year for example.

Yea, that's much more likely due the investment in the metaverse.

      • +1

While their metaverse is costing them dearly, they aren't the only social media stocks that are down more than the market.

        Match Group 67%
        Etsy 53%
        Pintrest 32%
        IAC 64%
        Bumble 27%
        Snapchat 78%

The nasdaq 100 is down 30% for the year, so most these companies are below average. Kinda hard to find social media companies that compare to FB as they do so much.

        • Heard about Snapchat. I didn't think those other one were considered social media. I do think he overpaid for it, unless he did it for other reasons than for purely just the money.

          • @ozhunter: He’s a sucker for punishment, he’s put himself in the firing line of governments that can make or break his other businesses. Once he realized he tried to get out of it, but it was too late hubris is basically his undoing.

If he did it for any other reason beyond tiring of having more money than anyone else he’s going to be frustrated and disappointed. Ultimately he’s going to have to give up his other businesses or censor more than Twitter was before.

    • Then there are the advertisers them selves. They are extremely picky about who they spend their advertising dollars with. So if twitter stops moderating certain content like Musk has said it will, then Advertisers will stop advertising on twitter due to social pressure (look at how quickly Kanye is being dropped by his partners).

There are technological solutions to all of this though.

As a simple example an advertiser could provide (or select from a list of premade options) a list of words/phrases/topics/users/whatever that they don't want to ever have their adds appear anywhere near. So someone says a naughty word and magically there will be no adds appearing from that advertiser ever again on that particular thread, or even on any other thread by that now auto blocked user.

The conversation initiator could also have a similar list of things that can't be said on his thread. Auto block if someone uses the n word or whatever.

Elon is a smart man, he will figure it out.

      • +1

Except advertisers don’t care to do this, they have proven time and time again they will abandon the whole platform rather than be associated with it, even if their ads didn’t run with the objectionable content. (YouTube has suffered several whole platform boycotts).

It’s also impossible to pre list every naughty word or offensive image, which means invariably one will sneak through, causing the same resulting backlash.

A smart man wouldn’t have bought Twitter. It’s a poisoned chalice. He couldn’t figure out how to get out of it when he finally realized this.

        • +1

A smart man wouldn’t have bought Twitter.

Depends why he bought it. He gave his reasons. It could be a lie, who knows. He could lose 99.9% of his wealth and I'm sure he'll be fine. Financially, I don't think it's a good investment decision, but then again he got quite a few investors to go with him on it. Maybe they all hate money.

If Musk allows people to talk about climate change, covid, vaccines, lgb and transgender issues I doubt there would be that many advertisers that would just not advertise on there, unless they too hate money. Might be some backlash for a few days, then it will just go back to normal.

          • @ozhunter: The problem he’s going to face is he runs other businesses in countries that aren’t so friendly to freedom of speech. So unless he bought it because he’s tired of having personal freedom and money, he’s screwed himself. It wasn’t even a good business before he bought it.

        • -1

A smart man wouldn’t have bought Twitter.

lol the man is exceptionally intelligent, probably an actual genius, but you know better of course ;)

          • -1

@trapper: That’s why he tried to get out of it when sober.

  • +3

The only reason I used Twitter is to get bonus entries in gleam comps

  • So far, it is more publicity stunt and will continue to attract news coverage. Essentially, free advertising.

As for allowing more right wing messages in the name of freedom of speech, it is more of an US thing. Sorry, I don't think we (AUS) get to have much say on things.

Truly objective news coverage is rare nowadays. When you see / read / watch coverages from both sides, you start to realise they are all manipulating the audience. Is either side really telling the truth or the truth is somewhere in the middle perhaps. It's "interesting" the same story can be presented in two or more totally different ways.
    Anyway, care more about bargains.

    • -1

There’s some things which are consistently true facts present in articles from sources on both sides, even if they spin them differently. While some extreme (mostly very right wing) sites ignore facts altogether. Once upon a time a news site being factually inaccurate would damage their reputation, but people seem to seek out things that support their argument rather than wanting to be informed now days. A large part pf this is because social media allows people to participate, so they feel ownership of the narrative.

This level of non factual news can basically be traced to the rise of social media.

  • +1

Musk has borrowed a lot of money to make the deal happen. Twitter must now spend US$1 billion every year just to pay the interest bill. That's a lot of advertising to sell. The days of tech companies losing money hand over fist and it didn't matter, are over.

Remember that Musk spent months trying to wiggle out of the deal, and then accepted paying a wildly inflated price based on early 2022 valuations.

This is a really bad deal, for Musk.

Don't like him one bit but the shit he says and does is so fkn stupid it's unbelievable how much traction he gets and how much he gets away with… it's an entertainment spectacular.

    • Any examples of things he has said for those of us that don't use Twitter?

Yea he was quite popular on Twitter.

I'd guess other popular figures like Jordan Peterson will definitely be reinstated and maybe Andrew Tate.

Thought Elon wanted to help humanity?

In the context of buying Twitter, I think he wants to make the "digital town square" more accepting of other views.

      • Jordan Peterson

What happened to that guy? I don't keep up with him, but every time I've heard about him in passing lately it's been because he's no-shit burst into tears in some interview. What's going on with that lad these days?

        • +1

He's still doing a lot of the great stuff he used to, just much more commercialized filled in between now.
Couple years back he disappeared entirely and nearly died because of benzo withdrawals, but when he made it back he came in hot and had a streak of some of the most interesting podcasts I've ever heard. He took that momentum to move on to bigger projects and new books and has since joined Daily Wire to monetize his content more.

I still check in periodically to see who he's interviewing each week but tbh his content is not quite as interesting as it was. Go back 6-12 months and I was listening eagerly to every video he pumped out.

I still think he's the most interesting and useful person that's been on the internet for myself so far, but I'm a bit worried the peak is over now. Especially recently when he made some honestly pretty dumb tweets, got banned from twitter, then went and joined the Daily Wire of all things.
Don't get me wrong, I read the odd DW piece and don't care for woke twitter rules one bit, but the beauty of Peterson was that he always seemed above the low energy mud flinging, and only engaged with hot topic in a very careful and considered way.

          TLDR
-Got on meds due to illness and stress (wife had cancer, kid nearly died)
-Crazy withdrawals from meds, basically catatonic for a couple years
          -Came back on God mode
-Is now edging more towards commercial/provocateur nonsense

        "Andrew Tate."

Plot twist. This guy and his brother have just been arrested for human trafficking.
And if it wasn't for his unbanning on Twitter he wouldn't have been tweeting and giving away his location leading to his arrest.
Also apparently related to some kind of stupid beef with the young UN climate activist celebrity girl. He got emotional about her reply to his tweet and posted an image of two pizza's which was how he gave away his location. You can't make this shit up lol.

        • Greta is a leader. She is not a celebrity girl. She is a Swedish environmental teen activist

She owned him with one tweet. he got so frazzled he posted a vid ordering pizza. hence gave away his location.

Andrew Tate tagged Thunberg in a tweet in which he bragged of owning 30 cars with "enormous emissions."
Greta Thunberg tweeted "yes, please do enlighten me. email me at [email protected]" I
