AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6C/12T CPU $149 + Delivery ($0 SYD, ADL C&C) @ PCByte

670

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but for someone looking to build a new PC on a budget, or upgrade on the cheap, this CPU, in combination with a B450/B550 motherboard and 16gb of DDR4 ram could be yours for under $350!

Also be aware, this CPU doesn't allow for PCI-e Gen 4.0, and it's performance is probably only equivalent to a Ryzen 5 3600. The R5 5600 (non-G variant) will be significantly faster.

    DDR4 maybe? :)

  • And you could 3d print or laser cut a cheap plastic case.

There was a $99 mini itx deal yesterday

      cardboard case superior

  • Any good B550 deals available to pair this with?

Silly question, but I'm seeing lots of AMD CPU posts lately. I guess I'm out of the loop. Did a new CPU release?

    • I am also out of the loop, but it does seem that a lot of AMD CPUs are suffering from negative inflation.

New series of AMD chips, yep.

    • +3

New series of chips that can't go on old motherboards, new series of chips that are very expensive (they will be until the rest of the ecosystem goes down when it becomes more "mainstream"). They have too much supply of the old gen, so we'll hopefully see great deals for CPU/motherboard and DDR4 memory (new motherboards for AMD are DDR5 only).

      • Interesting. Thanks!
I have a 3700x paired with a 3090 (bought it at the height of GPU prices and then lost access to my account where I was mining. RIP a few grand). But seems to be fast enough!

      • I never said they were good value. I just answered his question.

      13th gen Intel also released.

Basically the 5600G without the igpu, so as stated no pcie 4 and half the cache VS a 5600.

considering upgrading this from my quad core ryzen 3 3100, worth it? pairing with an RTX 2070 GPU

    • Spend approx $50-60 more and get 5600 instead.

You can thank me later :)

      • hmm, tempting, but 30% more cost for 12-15% more performance according to reviews

        • +2

I guess it depends on the forbidden word 'future proofing' :)

Let's say if you decide to upgrade your GPU to a 3070 or 3080, I would say the 5600 shouldn't be a reason for any bottleneck whereas 5500 could be.

Also PCIE gen4 compatibilty could be an important thing in future.

          YMMV

        • That's not a particularly good way of thinking about it though… Don't just compare the cost of the cpu. How about the motherboard that it's sitting in? The ram that either cpu would need need? PSU etc etc. After all is said and done, you are getting 12-15% more performance for like 3-6% of the overall cost of the components that go into making the computer perform (doesn't matter if you own them already or not).

It's money really well spent, unlike going from a 5600 to a 5900x or something that genuinely nets no performance for an huge increase in price plus needing to spend more on better motherboard, psu.

Far better value and price vs performance from a 5600 vs 5500 when you consider the total cost of the platform

It's worth the +$20 for Vega Graphics, you're not getting PCIe4 either way.

    R5 5600G

cpu prices down but motherboard prices have nearly doubled

    • +2

Yeah my MSI B450M Mortax Max was like $80 on here like 6 months ago, I think because there weren't any of these budget ryzens in stock. Now it's up to like $140 again.

Almost cheaper to get an intel mobo. How's the i3 12100 or whatever it's called compare to this CPU?

Edit: looks like i3 12100F is a touch faster than this in games, despite being only 4c/8t instead of 6c/8t

      • +1

It's because AIBs were bundling mobos with GPUs so that retailers were forced to buy them. Retailers then had to sell their surplus mobos well below MSRP to clear stock.

  • Not cheap enough vs 5600 etc for gaming I wouldn't have thought. Just spend $50 more on your $1000 computer to get better performance, resale and longevity.

Perfectly good buy if you are doing an office machine or not playing demanding new games.

I’m confused … this doesn’t have an integrated GTX card and other bits and bobs pretty much on par or slower than 5600g …. Why wouldn’t one just spend $20 extra ??

Have I missed something here ??

I guess most people are getting a discrete GPU anyway so very few of them care about the integrated graphics.

  • Still no deals for itx mobo.

These go great with cheap a320 boards off gumtree/fb (with bios update).
Perfect for flipping or gifting pcs heading into christmas.

For a new build on budget with new parts, id move to a i3 12100f at $169.
A gem of a cpu from intel.
