Alienware AW3423DW Vs AW3423DWF Gaming Monitor

Hey all!

With the inpending release of alienwares aw3423dwf.

How does the non gsync model compare to the gsync.

I know it drops 10hz and gsync. But costs $200 less.

I'm not all up with gsync.

I currently run a 3090 on a samsung g7 32".

Is gsync and 10fps more a sacrifice you can't be without?

I'm looking to buy the dw model but if the dwf is better, I'd go that way.

The F model is reported 200usd cheaper.

  • You'd have to wait for reviews to see if the FreeSync implementation is good with Nvidia cards or a stutter mess.

It's still a 1st gen panel & you're still gonna run into the same text rendering issues as the current model.

    • Txt issues arent a real issue as i only game on it.

I'm eagerly waiting on hardware unboxed review.

But i dont know toouch about gsync or the likes.

I dont even thonk i run g sync on my g7 currently lol

  • Wait for reviews, but the upsides to the DWF so far is that it won't have a Gsync module fan (but it will still have another fan anyway) and the firmware is upgradeable

    • Ive never upgraded the firmware on my g7 😂😂🤣

    Hey mate,

I got the AW3423DW in the last deal for ~$1700 and here's my 2c.

1/ The panel is bloody amazing. Like incredible. I know the reviews all rave about it but holy shit it is a sight to behold, seeing it first hand is like no other screen. The sooner you buy one the more time you'll have enjoying it. it's f**ing incredible!

2/ re: frame rate / hz… For me, honestly, it's diminishing returns past 144hz. I can only just tell the difference between 144 and 165, and I can't tell the difference between 165 and 175. Maybe 144 vs 240 might be a bigger leap but yeah 10hz is negligible… and when I'm actually engaged and playing a game… yeah - very minimal difference…. to me! It's a personal thing sure but that's my 2c. I've tested in quake 2, Destiny 2 and also Doom Eternal. All games that I can easily push above 200fps constant with the right settings. So yeah, for me, it wouldn't matter if it's 175 or 165.

3/ gsync vs freesync. my last panel had freesync, I now have gsync. I can't tell the difference. They both seem to have minor problems once you go over the refresh rate cap so for me I limit my fps to 166 and yeah, it's nice. I'm playing red dead 2 and the new plague tale game - they sit around 100-110 for me and feel super smooth. for FPS games I tweak the settings so it hits 166. works well for me, I couldn't be happier.

4/ fan noise and text clarity. Both non-issues for me. My unit is dead silent, cannot hear fan noise at all. And I love the way text looks on it. To me it's almost closer to an Apple Retina display as everything just looks smoother (defo not blurry, still crisp) so yeah - just nice to look at in general.

5/ price. this is just me, but I reckon you'll be waiting a while to see an actual difference with the DWF. The DW seems to go on sale sub $1700 pretty often, I really don't know what price the DWF will launch at in $AUD but you've then got to wait for a sale to then see the price difference there, so yeah - depends how patient you are. I did notice that the price on the Dell website has dropped from $2,399 to $2,099. Not sure if it's a sale or just the new RRP

Anyway - like I said, just my 2c but I'm over the moon with my purchase and so stoked I got it now and didn't wait.

Good luck with your decision, I highly recommend just getting the DW so you have it now!! (well, next time there's a sale hah!)

    • Thanks for that.

I wish I had just jumped on the aw3423dw a while back but between reports of the fan being loud, text rendering and the scattershot availability I got scared.

I use a 3080 so Gsync is fine for me but I'm on a freesync monitor now and never had an issue. I was kinda hoping for a 38" as I'd use it for gaming and work but so far it doesn't even seem like it's in the pipeline and a quick google suggests 49" will be next.

Maybe I should just wait for the next sale and grab it!

      • Yeah I saw somewhere in a video or article that the reason for the 34" size is something about the way they cut the oled panels - when they make a massive sheet of oled, they can cut an exact amount of 34" panels with minimal waste. But yeah - I think we're still a while off before we have a choice in size when it comes to oled monitors. I've gone from 2x 27" to a single 34" UW and it's actually working pretty well for me. the no bezel in the middle is what makes it ace so I'm happy.

Also every AW3423DW comes with "3Y Premium Panel with Advanced Exchange Service" - it's even listed on my invoice as a separate line item. If there's a fault Dell guarantee next business day delivery of a replacement screen. So yeah - that's what alleviated my concerns with loud fan noise etc.

        • So the audible fan noise is definitely a fault and not part of expected use?

@Waffles: Yeah well I mean if it's louder than my 3080 fans when that's at full throttle then I'd say there's a problem haha!

But yeah I've had mine for a few weeks now and haven't noticed it. If I put my ear up to it I can tell there is a fan there but that's about it. My guess is that the people complaining about it would have a faulty unit as it'd be running the fans at max rpm for you to hear it…. which would imply something is wrong somewhere, either hardware or software.

  • Hey OP, you can grab the DWF now as cheap as ~$1610 with discount codes! I jumped on it despite the price as I wanted to treat myself.

  • Anyone have any idea if the DWF can run both VRR and HDR at the same time if using an Nvidia GPU? I know the G-sync Ultimate certification on the DW means it will run HDR and have G-sync running at the same time but its too expensive for a monitor, especially one that could potentially have burn-in. I generally use my monitors until they die so having a monitor potentially kill itself isn't ideal in my books, esp one that cost stupid money.
