https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BCTTCLZHThe biggest tip I could give anyone wanting to use Excel today is to learn how to use PowerQuery.
I try and tell this to traditional Excel 'power users' - and that it will make their lives easier and they just don't want to listen!
Genuinely curious, as my muscle memory and comfort makes me want to resist change haha
I know I can google it, but curious if you have a simple response as to what the benefits are? If you were to put it in a sentence or two
Well I use it to import/merge and transform data and worksheets really quickly from various sources. No formulas required, it's all done through the PowerQuery Editor. You can access it through the Data > Get Data tab.
Also a super-handy feature is it records all the steps you do in the sidebar and you can jump backwards and forwards through changes you made… for example if you made a change that messed up the output you can just remove that step.
My background is web development and SQL but I use Excel quite a bit as well in my job.
Interesting, thank you!
I will be doing a small ETL job in a while, so this may well be the way to go.
Cheers
@wormarts: No worries, I also use it a lot to do things like - show me items that are in one list and not the other. Using the merge queries feature it's super-simple. It can also do fuzzy matching, so that it will match items that are close but not exact (to catch things like typos, etc).
@beebul: Teach me+?
I love PowerQuery so much I sometimes make a problem harder because I try to find reasons to use PowerQuery… fml
I'm a PowerQuery convert, better than sliced bread.
Been kicking myself that I've only learnt about it a few months ago.PowerAutomate and the other PowerApps are pretty good too.
Yes I am a big fan of PowerAutomate Desktop - I'm currently using it to automate tons of processes, to the point where it's becoming a large part of my role.
Given that I have downloaded about 20 free Excel ebooks from Amazon, I must be expert by now.
Yep. It's the thought that counts.
Hahaha
Now download them onto your brain!
I did try to smack the ipad against my head a few times. Feel like I got some new knowledge..
Imagine not having to lie about Excel - Expert level on your resume
Speaking of Excel, why not type this into any cell in your spreadsheet, guys! See what you came up with.
