Any value in upgrading from 3600X? I have a 3070 and 2 screens 1 4k and one 1440p, and my computer is struggling multitasking with YouTube while a game is open like MW (it gets bout 100fps at my current settings though, so don't think GPU bound as much)

    • -1

      Is that a ryzen 5 or 7?

      • +1

        3600 is ryzen 5

        • -1

my bad. i was thinking of ryzen 7 3700x

    • +4

You can always keep a hardware monitor open and see which one maxes out. If you're gaming in 4k and trying you watch a 1440p youtube video at the same time you'll probably get some throttling somewhere

      • that's actually great idea, I kind of just assumed it would be CPU. Would windows hardware monitor be enough, or do I need a specific software for this?

        • +1

I use HWmonitor and HWinfo, but you could honestly probably get away with the built in performance tab in task manager

        • +4

HWinfo64 would be your best bet

    • I would say YES .. Its like a one tire up graphics card upgrade but its the CPU

It's a decent jump in performance. If you wanted to get the most out of your current rig then yes. You can surely sell your 3600 as well

  • +6

Think I'll wait for the magic $199 like I did for the 2600. Hopefully not to much longer.

  • +1

    this or $30 cheaper 5600G?

    • +1

pay the extra $30 if you don't need an integrated GPU.

    • 5600 has pcie 4
      is newer
beats the 5600G in every benchmark but not by a meaningful amount
      has a larger L3 cache

      • +3

double the L3 cache not just larger, 5600g struggles to beat 3600 in games.

        • Correct. I should've mentioned that as well :)

    • This if your gaming

  • +6

    shipping kills the deal

  • hm 5600 or 12400 or 13th gen

    • +1

13th gen is over $500 and 5600 barely enters $200.
Thats a weird inconsistent choice but hey if u can get the 13th gen then why settle for low?

    • +1

      12400(F).

It has a potential upgrade path for when 13th gen gets cheaper and releases mid-range processors.

    • +3

12400f is faster than 5600, average energy consumption slightly higher (spike almost double thought, so bigger psu probably needed).
13th should be better (no benchmark yet), but could cost a lot more.
5600 is the cheapest and slowest here, but this is probably best bang for bucks cpu. One of The best budget cpu along with 12100f, 5600, 12400f (from cheapest to most expensive and slowest to fastest).
I would say go for 5600 if you already has am4 m/b or you want the best bangs for bucks cpu and cheap m/b.
If your budget allowed, go for 12400f especially if you need to buy m/b anyway. As the m/b will support 13th gen cpu. You have opinions to upgrade in the future without buying m/b.

    • Either is fine. Am4 boards often goes on sale. And can easily find sub 100 bucks entry b550m board if you don't want to wait for deals. Often can save 80 bucks compared to an equivalent 12400f build.

But, 12400f is slightly better, so it's not like the money isn't going somewhere.

A good mid range CPU. I was able to overclock all the core to the boost speed (4.7KHz I think it was). Pair it with 3600 MHz RAM.

  • Was looking for a cheap-ish CPU to replace for a dead computer. Unsure if it's dead CPU or mobo, but will assume it's one or the other, or both (PC doesn't power up when plugged in, have verified it's not a PSU problem). This seems to fit the deal.

Does anyone know if this CPU works with an AsRock AB350 Pro4 MB? Or would I have to get a new mobo as well to use this? Previous CPU was a Ryzen 5 1600. Is there a suggestion for an accompanying affordable mobo for this CPU as well?

    • +1

From what i searched, the motherboard is for AM4 which is exactly what this cpu is.
I would say affordarble and good value would be a b550 motherboard. depends if ur going for mATX or ATX. for mATX there's an m in the name, example: b550m

      • +1

Yeah, it seems to involve BIOS flashing to get it to run. Just not sure I want to deal with it, given that the board is pretty old as well (bought in 2017).

The case is a mid tower, so I'll probably be getting an ATX mobo.

    • +2

Does anyone know if this CPU works with an AsRock AB350 Pro4 MB

It will only work "if Asrock have a new bios for it that supports the 5600 and if you can somehow update the bios before you add the CPU.

I'm guessing that board is so old it doesnt have bios flashback/ a button to allow updating bios without cpu/ram/storage installed

Only other way to update the bios is to get it to boot up and use a usb stick with the file downloaded from asrock.com

      • Yeah it's pretty old, so was half thinking to just get a new compatible board since it'd normally be pretty hard to identify which one is dead between the mobo or CPU.

Will keep the USB stick solution in mind in case I decide to try it. Thanks!

        • +1

Make sure whatever new board you get has bios flashback .. or whatever the company calls the bios update without a need for a cpu installed is called each company calls it something else.

    • +3

Hey I have that same mobo, I will upgrade at some point to this CPU. It will work with the beta bios 7.2, very easy to flash, just need a USB stick. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/AB350%20Pro4/index.asp#BIOS

I wouldn't waste money on a new mobo to get this CPU.

      • I have a similar(ish) motherboard - the Asrock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac - for which the 7.2 beta bios is also available. I'm tempted to get the 5600x or 5700x - currently I just have a really old AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (Summit Ridge).

Would you know if I updated my BIOS to 7.2 - would my old CPU work? Just fearing my old CPU will suddenly stop working!

It'd be really good if I could get away with upgrading my CPU without touching anything else in my system!

        • +1

7.2 beta bios only disables the A series CPUs. I'm on the r5 1600 and have already updated the bios to 7.2, works fine. It also fixed my random freeze + reboot issue that I had for a long time since the issue was AGESA 1006.

Also, 5600x is not worth the premium over 5600 according to basically everyone.

          • @Ch34p: Thanks@Ch34p! I updated the BIOS last night up to 7.2 - so far so good! My PC doubles as a HTPC (full-time) and gaming (part-time) via a RTX 3070. I've been meaning to upgrade the CPU for a while - in my use case would a 5600x (vs a 5600) be a better option?

            • +1

@bulaboy: Nope, just overclock it. The money saved can go to a better CPU cooler.

  • Dear Oz Bargainers
Can anyone suggest or recommend a motherboard that can go with this CPU & the one that will support this disk that i already purchased Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink 1TB

Really? There seems to be a common theme in your comments.

          Me too

  • Showing as $249 for me with $70 discount from their regular price :-(

  • It’s still on special at Amazon, but be quick. It’s already gone back up to $300 at computer alliance.
