Not bad iGPU for the price either.
Not great for a HTPC. Doesn't support hardware AV1 decode. Good for a ghetto gaming PC.
Does anything even support AV1 codec.
Yes. The 5600 non g and the x version do.
Check this site out
Yeah, but is all content AV1? I recall that it's 'yet to be implemented'.
@BargainHunterJohnnyB: I'm not sure honestly. I dont have a cpu that supports av1 so i cant comment on that
No, they don't support AV1 hardware acceleration. That link is showing encoding/decoding using regular CPU instructions.
@AnotherHuman: Yeah i know, i thought that was what we were talking about?
Yep, Intel QuickSync supports AV1 decode since 11th gen.
Is there much AV1 content?
Edit: appears my i3 1115G4 doesn’t have av1 decode :(
@[Deactivated]: Are you sure it doesn't have support? G4 and G7 Xe iGPUs are supposed to include AV1 decode.
True, but my ryzen 1600AE could handle software decoding 4k AV1 so i think this will be fine either way
I use it on 2 x HTPCs and have run AV1 test files in both 4K and 8K - not an issue. CPU usage peaks at about 60% with the latter and there's no stutter or sync issues etc.
Hard to think of a simpler HTPC if you want everything on a single chip etc and no need for a video card.
Edit - biggest issue was with NBN speed as mine at a measured 54/19 really struggles to keep up…
Edit 2 - I'm actually using 8M of DDR4 2400 RAM that I had lying around and that too works fine for HTPC purposes. I do agree that 3200 would be faster of course. MOBO for those interested is a Gigabyte B550M S2H with HDMI 2.1.
Any value in upgrading from 3600X? I have a 3070 and 2 screens 1 4k and one 1440p, and my computer is struggling multitasking with YouTube while a game is open like MW (it gets bout 100fps though)
No, wait for a deal on the 5700X, 5800X3D, 5900X or 5950X
Yesterday there were some sweet deals for the X3D and 5900X. So we can expect some more soon
thank you! is it because they have more cores or are their single core performance is better?
Both, all the 5000 series Zen 3 Ryzen's have an IPC + single core uplift compared to your 3600X and based on your usage pattern, you can benefit from more cores
What motherboard are you running?
The 5700X is good because it is 8C/16T at 65W so that would be a safe drop in upgrade. The other 3 are 105W parts and need more attention to the motherboard VRM and CPU cooling
@Look Up: ah great point again, I have a MSI MAG B550M MORTAR. never thought of looking at specs (and RM750X for power supply.)
@Larsson: Good choice, your mobo has one of the best VRM packages for a mid tier board
Any of the four CPU's will be fine for you
@Look Up: Thanks mate. I couldn't be bothered getting the box put of the storage but found online specs and supported CPU's. https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B550-TOMAHAWK/support#cp…
I think my next issue is going to be my cooler if I go 105w CPU. I've got NH-U12S. and with the amount of heat GPU produces right under the CPU, I think it will struggle to keep up lol.
@Larsson: That cooler will be fine for a 5900x. 5800x will actually be harder to cool as all the cores are adjacent, regardless the cooler is adequate. Install an extra case fan if you need to.
You could also just move the GPU to the other x16 slot…
Because the 5600g (& 5700g) are repackaged mobile chips with half the L3 cache (i.e. 16 MB) compared to the chiplet desktop chips (32 MB).
Thus they have worse performance compared to equivalent core count chiplet processors (but better idle power and faster memory controller).
I'm on something similar, I'm personally going to wait for cheaper 5700x the 5600g would be an upgrade tho
I just checked YouTube fps comparing 5600x, 5600, 5600g and 5500. This 5600g is slower than 5600 in most (probably all) benchmarks, especially in games. You can check here for 5600g vs 3600x comparison https://youtu.be/yJzPuDHl-sM
nah, 5600g is no 5600 and is actually two completely different chips, half the l3 cache and no pcie 4.0 support, AMD just got the mobile 5600H and binned it for desktop and called it a day.
Are you sure it's the CPU? Have you confirmed in task manager etc that it's struggling? A 3600x with youtube, discord, some apps and a triple A game should be perfectly capable unless you're also streaming. Especially given you're gaming at either 1440 or 4k theres less load on the CPU vs 1080p for example.
I've had issues having YouTube going on a second screen whilst my primary is playing a game. Like YouTube will just pause/freeze, etc until I tab out of the game. This is in chrome or firefox and only appears to be specific games. (Diablo 2:R for example).
someone else also made this point and it's a good one, I kinda jsut assumed actually. could even be due to poor cooling as mine hangs around at 80degrees post GPU driver updates for whatever reason. I will monitor this before I invest, thanks.
any advice for monitoring software? or just use windows task manager?
BUT ALSO: I know it's a hardware problem because game screens gets randomly jerky and YouTube sound plays while the picture freezes. sometimes it freezes entirely without a loading indication (and definitely off peak hours)
NZXT CAM is decent for monitoring. Not as feature packed or detailed as others but easy to use with good UI
@BrokeCamel: My NZXT CAM seems pretty resource heavy at times - in this instance it may become the thing it was supposed to destroy
@Domingo: I get that as well. Its been awhile since i tried out other options - are they less resource heavy? CAM uses 1-1.5% of my CPU, but im not tooo phased as i dont run it all the time, just when i want to test something
Game screens getting jerky/picture freezing could be software still. A good flush of drivers using DDU and fresh install may help.
Task manager is just to confirm if your CPU usage is super high. I usually use HWInfo for actual metrics
i WAS going to wait for black friday and a 5800X3D deal, but this is just too cheap and it's not that much slower really for almost a 1/3rd of the price.
Good deal but if anyones buying this as a cheaper alternative for a 5600 and aiming to upgrade with a dGPU down the line I would suggest against it. Unlike Intel F vs non F options, the ryzen iGPU is more powerful but their APUs are weaker than the 'standard' counterparts, you get neutered pcie 4.0 support, only half the L3 cache among other stuff. You would struggle to see any real gains ingame against a 3600 in fps let alone a 5600.
Would this be any good for replacing a headless server running debian? Got an aging Hp Microserver Gen8 and was thinking building my own low profile silent-ish pc to replace it. Don't care too much about ecc ram. I mainly use it as a nas, running some docker containers (home assistant, plex server, sonarr, radar, etc)
For plex hardware transcoding without a GPU an Intel system would probably suit better. Plex can use the integrated graphics from (correct me if I am wrong somebody) the 7th gen up to do HW transcoding. If you have a GPU then it is not an issue.
That's only a consideration if you rely on the server doing the transcoding though? I usually rely on "direct play" feature of plex, so video files are streamed as is, and are transcoded on the end device (fire stick, google TV, etc)
Then this will do just fine.
With the right MB it will actually support ECC just fine. For a headless server something like an Asrock rack board will give you official ECC support as well as other server features. GPU side of the APU essentially doing nothing for you though.
I'm a bit out of touch with server hardware these days so it depends on cost. That's why I'm thinking building my own, but I'll check out this asrock rack board
They have a whole series of AM4 boards from mini-ITX to full sized ATX. None will be as cheap or as available as standard boards though. Then again can remote boot on a Rack board, access the BIOS via KVM, etc. and run a standard Ryzen CPU without the need for dedicated video.
I have been waiting for this for a while :) of course, 1 day after I buy a 2200GE this becomes available. My only consolation is that the 2200GE is a 35W processor, it may be more suited to my low-power needs.
Good price for it.
Nice!!!
With these figures, what do you guys recon a decent price drop target for 5700x?
I would probably pull the trigger at $320 personally but i dont think itll go below $340
damnn thats cheap.. I want to upgrade from 3300x
not sure to grab this or wait for a 5800x3d dealThat’s a big jump. I’d probably wait for a deal as G series won’t be very impressive if you already have considered a 5800x at some point
Would be worth it if there were any decent B550M boards for less than $140, but all the reasonably good ones are $190+
Another Shopping Express deal like this would be good https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/631310
Picked up an MSI B550m Bazooka for $89.50 ($100 delivered).
This is showing up as $259 for me? Has the Deal expired?
umm pricing showing as $259 (3:04pm)
Saw this on their site, got to the store and price had changed to $259, thought id lost my mind only to find this thread and google still showing it as $189 in the history. Kid on the counter thought id lost my mind
Wow that's a lot of cpu for the cash
