Microsoft OneNote is a digital notebook that can be used to keep all of your notes, research, plans, and information in a single place. It's perfect for keeping track of everything you need to remember or reference, whether it's a grocery list or the details of your next big project at school or at work.

This illustrated guide will teach you everything there is to know about OneNote: you will learn to customize the OneNote interface with themes and colors that make it easy to find what you're looking for at a glance, and you will also learn many different ways to organize your content.

From creating folders and subfolders within notebooks, creating checklists, adding tabs, sharing notebooks with others, and attaching files from your computer or OneDrive, to attaching audio notes as MP3 files, adding pictures, and much more.

OneNote is a tragically underrated application.

    • +2

I use it for everything! Nobody seems to realise how useful it can be.

I started using it at work, only to then fall back to my Excel spreadsheet on a daily basis 😅

Personally I'm probably overwhelmed by the sheer number of "productivity" applications, but being creature of habit just end up with what I'm familiar with.

        • only to then fall back to my Excel spreadsheet

you can embed Excel spreadsheets into OneNote.

Notion much better in my opinion…

It's also tragically gone backwards the last few years in features.

      • I think because they’re maintaining two versions -
OneNote Desktop and “OneNote for Windows 10” which has better/different features. OneNote 2022/365 is supposed to migrate them into “one” app finally and resolve quite a few things.

They've been saying that for 3 years.

I absolutely survived off Onenote during Uni. I put everything on there.
Now I'm a teacher, class notebooks has been a godsend. I'll definitely be reading this book to get some extra tips.

OneNote and To Do are fantastic. I can't live without them now.

I used to live off Google Keep, but after using OneNote at work, I ditched Keep in a heartbeat.

Tbh I can't stand it. I've seriously given it a go for over a year, many times, not just when it came out but recently.

I've tried both OneNote for windows 10 and the standard office 365 version. Both incredibly frustrating.

For app that has been around a while it is seriously not polished enough for me. It still struggles with the rotations of some things printed to it. Zooming on the tablet can cause an image to be pixelated and I'd have to restart the app to fix it. These were daily occurrences for me. Maybe my tablet was too small too. But basically my workflow didn't suit it when I was studying.

At work though OneNote with meeting and such is an awesome addition. Especially the integration. Collaboration on it in real time (if using the right apps) is good too. So is MS whiteboard btw (underated also, but doesn't allow cross domain accounts to collaborate).

I tried using it for my to-do list and such but fell back onto excel, linked to OneNote files. But now obsidian is out I think I'll probably start using that

Have they fixed one note absolutely murdering code snippets, or does it handle those nicely?

    • OneNote mostly does handle code snippets well - you can set mono font as default, copy-paste to Notepad (ie. in case of doubt) and double quotes are double quotes (ie. not fancy quotes like in Word).

    • Still terrible in my experience. Code + Tables (sorting, basic formulas) are the areas for most improvement in onenote imo. Until then I use both onenote + notion

Is this actually a good guide? I find I haven't found a great way to use OneNote in terms of structuring my notebook.
