Have You Ever Got Caught Pirating?

I have lived 1/3 of my live and grew up sailing the high sea and still does when the subscription I pay doesn’t have what I want (to watch) or just trying a game before actually buying it to support the devs when I can but I have never ran into any problems in terms of the po po tracking down my public IP and appeared at my front door..

Just wondering has anyone got ‘caught’? Or getting by fines or etc downloading illegally?

Please share your experience!!

Plenty of people used to get letters saying their internet was going to be disconnected back in the ADSL days because their IP was tracked to movie torrents.

  • lol, good luck

I torrented Skyrim in 2012 or 2013 when i just finished highschool. My dad received a letter from Bethesda, forwarded by his ISP, that legal action might be taken if the torrent wasnt stopped. The thing was, he received the mail months after i torrented the game and by then, i had already completed the game.

  • There are millions of people here who still can’t torrent bech see if their slow internet

When I was a kid we used to play pirates at sailing club. We would sail up alongside the other kids and rock their boat causing it to take on water and tip if they weren’t paying attention.
There was “that” kid that complained it was bullying and coaches obviously didn’t like it because they occasionally had to upright the boats so they banned pirates. After it was banned the kids that were close friends continued to play and just claimed it was an accident if caught, and of course “that” kid still complained he was being bullied because no one included him.

The punishment if caught pirating was to “walk the plank” which was to be put on the inflatable boat and taken out to a marker post and then forced to jump in the water and swim back 100m or so to the shore. It wasn’t as bad as it sounds, it was just taking the monthly swim test that everyone had to do to show they were fit enough to sail.

Wait… We aren’t talking about boats are we…

The closest I got was during the whole Dallas Buyers Club saga. Still haven't actually watched the film.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone in Australia actually getting done for it, hence why I don't bother with a VPN.

I got a letter via my isp that a file I downloaded was tracked. I remember it was the movie “Morning Glory” (The Harrison Ford movie, not some porno) because my mum asked me to download it!

(Not the Harrison Ford movie, some porno)

because my mum asked me to download it!

      FTFY - sounds more exciting

    • So, your mum asked you (a child) to download a movie called "Morning Glory", does that cover about 87% of it?

I got a letter from Optus once. All it said was that if you did it, don't do it again, and if you didn't do it, contact these lawyers that want your money to dispute it.

The funny thing was, I wasn't actually sharing anything, which is what they accused me of. They didn't download one bit from me. All they did was search and see I had a file named X of Y size.

You never get letters anymore though, because ISPs don't care, and lawyers can only sue for the cost of the thing you downloaded. So it costs them more money to sue you than they have any hope of recovering.

That's correct. There was a legal case in Australia where the courts said developer/publisher is only entitled to the cost of the item and not any penalties. So they dropped the case.

  • Dallas Buyers Club - I remember.

  • Nope, never. I’ve never had a warning for usage either, only back in the day copped a $2k bill for excess usage from Telstra which they waived

  • A while back New Zealand ISP's were disconnecting customer's on their 2nd infringement. I'm not informed on what happened to this law since then

    • ISP went broke with no customers.

No, I remember back in my TPG ADSL2+ days, I would get an email from them every week or two threatening me my internet would be cancelled if I continue if they find out if in pirating. Was a cookie cutter email trying to cover everyone that is and isn't pirating. Such a useless scare tactic.

  • The courts set a precedent back in The Dallas Buyers Club hearing meaning that distributors cannot claim more than the value to purchase a legit copy. Therefore it is not financially viable to go after downloaders. Hence new laws came into effect to get internet sites attributed to piracy DNS blocked by the major RSPs.
