    I guessing can't mesh 2 of these

    • +1

If the chipset is the right kind, if it's capable enough etc…and if third party router software providers have something for it (which they dont for this model), then it could be turned into a mesh router.

    • +2

Do you mean wireless mesh or ethernet backhaul? I have two of these setup, one as the Router and one as an Access Point (wired ethernet). Works flawlessly. Just have the same SSID and disable DHCP on the Access Point one.

      • Nice.

Wireless mesh. Third party software is making routers capable of it, so a nice little feature.

You have to be the tinkering kind of person, though usually it's very easy.

  • Is this an $87 worthwhile upgrade over my Telstra Smart Business Modem though.

I actually am considering getting it. My entire household who absolutely smash the internet usage are very over the crappy ISP modem.

OR will I buy this, realise how shit the ISP modem is and then regret buying and want to upgrade immediately to something even better.

    • Probs the later

    • Worked great for me as my usual download speen on my 100/40 Plan usually goes around 10-12MBps. Granted I do not download multiple stuffs and our household only got 2 person haha

      • +1

Our house is currently wifi locked as we have no ethernet ports - so wifi is important. I want to get them installed but it's an expense that can ultimately wait.

Speedtest just reported 102 down and 37.37 up, which is a pretty nice result. We have NBN FTTC but like I said it's from the Telstra Business Smart Modem, who's range absolutely sucks.

I've been meaning to upgrade for some time, but again it's just a cost that we can't commit to yet as I want something worth spending some good cash on.

I doubt there will be much of a speed improvement, but I know the range will be a lot better. And I imagine this unit has MUMIMO, or is that going to be another level up in cost?

        Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I recommend Asus , their mesh is amazing

          • @botchie: Not really needing mesh (I think), just need a more powerful wifi router. House isn't that big.

        • Wifi also depends on how thick your walls are, double brick walls are an absolute wifi killer.

If you/family play online games, you could also look into powerline, given your download speed you'll be fine. Depending where the powerpoints are and which breakers they are on you'll get anywhere from 100-500mbps (which would obviously be important for LAN). Latency is way better than Wifi.

          • @joshx: The house is only weatherboard so not exactly thick, but it's long.

I'll definitely consider this! But also I need an updated unit for the devices which natively use wifi as well.

        • +1

Also you can use Ethernet over power adapters. Basically use your power lines as Lan lines. You can even plug the Ethernet into a wireless AP to extend wifi in the black spots.

          • @killz111: Yeah me and my housemate have spoken about it. My parents had one, which didn't seem to be an issue. I'll do some research!

          • +1

@killz111: I'm looking for PowerPoint ethernet adaptor kit that can fit in double plug, and use both plugs. Even a passthrough PowerPoint, but they all are, or s3m to be, too wide to use the other plug same time.

        • We were sick of Wi-Fi issues in our house, so I just purchased a Gigabit 16 port switch.
Basically makes 1 Ethernet port into 16, been really happy with it and great speeds.

    • Get the rooted Telstra Smart Router 2. It's just versatile, and works well for a 100-150sqm property. You can find them on Gumtree or eBay for $50, I think. I own two (keep one as spare)

  • I'm in if this will mesh with an Archer A6. Anyone know?

  • +7

All of my TP link had constant issues within 2 years or usage
unstable wifi, repeat restart by itself etc.
I have since recycled all of them at officeworks and replaced with Asus instead.

    • +1

Can you run dd-wrt firmware on your old tp link? Been running an archer c9 on ddwrt for 5yrs+

    • I wish I'd bought an Asus router over my TP Link simply due to all the cool customisations you can do with the Asus.

      • Yeah I've got 2 Asus meshed and wifi coverage is now amazing, not to mention cool features they have , only low $100

        • Which Router?

          • @BuyOrNot: main one is asus tuf ax5400, you can get it on amazon from UK when on sale for around $150
my 2nd one (extender) is RT-AX55

    • I own 3 of these AX1500s and have friends that have bought them. Our experience has not been the same as yours. Never had a single problem with this router.

  • +1

Can’t comment specifically on the ax1500 either, but the ax3000/ax50 was pretty finicky and no fixes/very rare firmware updates. Have a look at experiences with the ax3000 that’s been around longer here https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/187958

Im sure tplinks expensive network gear is fine. Not sure on the cheaper end.

    • +1

I'm using this one right now, AX50, just had its firmware upgraded recently as well. (1.0.11 Build 20220526 rel.63519) Speedtest shows 250/20 on the More Broadband FTTP on 250/25 plan at 7:50pm

The AX50 is actually okay, although no WAP3 support which is a downside. Also it does get hot like pretty warm in your hand.

It does have 160MHz which the OP's one doesn't have.

  • Will it mesh with DECO E4 Please

    • +1

Nope you need to purchase another Deco to add-on to your Deco E4 mesh.

      • I do have two of them running was looking to upgrade modem which can mesh with them as well

        • +1

          Ok. Do you have FTTN?

          • @Twix: we have NBN is it same as FTTN :( ?

            • +2

@Brisbane1: FTTN is one type of nbn connection. There are more different types of nbn. Go to nbn POI and tell me what it says next to premises technology.

              • @Twix: Jeez you know too much about this lol it is Fibre

                • @Brisbane1: Premises technology Fibre is Fibre to the Premises. You don't need a VDSL modem. Plugin the Deco E4 to the nbn NTD. A reason to upgrade from the Deco E4 is if you want faster than 100Mbps download speed.

                  • +1

                    @Twix: Thank you so much

                  • @Twix: My plan is only 90/50 so i dount it will go faster than that without Upgrading :(

                    • @Brisbane1: 90/50 isn't a speed offered by nbn. You either have 100/40 or 1000/50. For 1000/50 you'll need to upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 Deco.

                      • +1

                        @Twix: Sorry 100/40 thanks

                        • +1

@Brisbane1: Deco E4 is suitable for 100/40. Add more Deco's if you need increased Wi-Fi range.

  • This might be the one that overheats and not good for oculus quest pcvr

  • +7

I just cannot recommend TP-Link to anyone, had very bad experiences with my last 3 routers from them. Go Asus, friends.

    • +3

I gotta 100% agree here. I've bought several TP Link routers in the past, and they are absolutely terrible, even the expensive models. DOA right out the box, dying just outside of warranty, lack of firmware updates, poor customisation due to limited settings, etc, etc.

My worst experience however was a fancier AX model I bought (can't remember which exactly, but it was ~$250 from EB Games maybe 18 months ago), which I was getting 100-200ms latency over LAN with, so I decided to return. The real kicker though was when I was packing it all back into the box, the mains-side of the included power brick zapped the shit out of me (minutes after unplugging it mind you). And that's not an exaggeration. I've touched an electric fence before. It was nearly as bad as that.

ASUS on the other hand, have been awesome. Years of firmware updates, their settings page is easy to navigate, with no shortage of options, plus Merlin support on some models if you're into that. My first model was the RT-N66U (10 years old now), which I replaced recently with the RT-AX53U (the RT-N66U was still working fine, it was just old).

Credit where credit is due though: TP Link's cheapie ethernet switches are flawless. Never had an issue with those. Just avoid their routers.

    • I’m still rocking Archer D9 from 9 years ago; hasn’t skipped a beat ever since and range is great too.

    • My tp kink Archer was great. Lasted 4 years when house struck by lightning and died. Pretty good way to go to silicon Heaven i think.
I was very happy with it.

    • My AX1500s have never had a problem.

  • This has no USB slot if you care about that.

    • It also doesn't have the modem function, so you're likely to need two devices for your internet

      • People are only getting this if you are running NBN, which you will have a separate NBN box irregardless.

        • If you live in a building, you get your internet usually over a twisted pair wire into your home, and you need a modern for that. Telstra SM2 does that for you.

  • Just dont set this up with the TP link App you will screw your WIFI performance

  • Bought on friday and it arrived yesterday morning, been using it since. It replaced an 8yr old telstra netgear c6300, the only difference I noticed is that the range is just slightly less than the c6300 othewise all same so far.

  • Can anyone recommend an Asus wifi 6 router ~$200? Got my eyes on the AX56U.

  • +1

I have had one of these for a year with 2 tp link extenders that work as mesh with it …..it has full mesh capability as long as it is the same brand . It's a very good router. Best I've ever had and I've had ASUS and lots of other brands …. firmware update is easy using the phone app .

  • +1

TP-Link Decos win every time. Forget the rest.

  • I have a TP-Link that came with my internet connection. It's wifi 5. Right now my pocco phone is wifi 6. However when I use moonlight streaming, 120hz is always dropping frames. It's near target. But only produces 80 to 118 on average. Would wifi 6 help with that? Since thats all I really want or need from an upgraded modem

    • Hard to say where the bottleneck is. WiFi 6 really shines where multiple devices are using the WiFi at once, if that's you then it might be worth trying one out. If you're playing at a distance that limits your bandwidth, a WiFi router with greater WiFi coverage might also help.

Ideally, if you can, use an Ethernet adapter to plug your phone in to the router to see if you get increased frame rate. If you don't see an improvement, either your phone or your current internet connection are not capable.

Failing that, if you play standing right next to router while connected via 5Ghz with no one else using the WiFi it will also give you an indication as above.

If you do see an improvement, a new router will probably help and WiFi 6 is the way to go.

    • "120hz is always dropping frames. It's near target. But only produces 80 to 118 on average"

That sounds more like a hardware(phone) issue.

  • Does anyone who have this router able to advise if it has parental controls to set on/off times by MAC address so that, e.g., I can allow the TV to still have internet for Netflix, but disable the access for my kids' computers at a set time each evening?

    • Can check when I'm home, but I'm pretty certain it does.

  • -2

GL.inet, linksys, asus etc all superior to mostly Tp-link junk.

I still have devices from the others mentioned here that have third party router software updates, whether open source, mostly open source or otherwise….several years later.

Who even uses dd-wrt anymore these days btw? LoL 😆. Almost every other third party mob is better, and certainly better for regular updates.

Will I feel any difference compared to Telstra smart modem? The telstra modem also have wifi 6

    • Telstra Smart modems are good quality Technicolor devices, and they also have modem (clue is in the name), not just router and wireless capabilities. I'm yet to see a device that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars that is as good, but I'll be happy if someone can point it out to all of us

  • do yourself a favor and save this money towards paying for a tradie to pull ethernet cables through your walls

    • I agree, did mine myself and never looked back.

    • Do you use a powered switch to support this?

      • +1

Yes, I use the TL-SG116E with my router.

  • Price is $99 now.. :(

  • This good for a 250/100 FTTP connection?

    • Should be, I have a 1000/50 plan, and I am using a 6-year-old router, and I am getting 900/40 during off-peak times.
This would be good if you have devices which have Wi-Fi 6 technology.

  • +1

I looked at one of these but went for the GL-iNet GL-AX1800 instead which IMHO is a far better solution. One big bonus with the GL-iNet is built in AdGuard that really does work! You have to manually enable this on first setup though.

    • it'll still be getting software updates in 10 years, which is a boon if you're security conscious. I have a linksys from 2014 that still gets OpenWRT updates to this day.
