Domestic Travel- Name in Reverse Order

Hi guys,

I made a stupid mistake putting down my name in the reverse order 🤦‍♂️ return flight booked Syd-Melb. Misus thinks I’m being paranoid said it’s fine for domestic travelling.

Has anyone made similar mistake previously? Do they check?

        No it was really…. VJ

This is easy, don't check-in online, go to the desk and get them to print boarding pass. They'll check your ID anyway and fix it on the spot if required.

    • Ok thank you. I was thinking just go check in at the self check in machine and put in my first name as my last name and the booking reference number. Doesn’t that normally print out your boarding pass and baggage tag?

It does but in this instance, for peace of mind, I would just go to check-in desk and get a human to do it all for you if the queues aren't too unreasonable. You don't want to get to the boarding gate and some pedant starts being difficult about it.

        • Yeh fair call thanks for this. Do they usually charge you for this 😅

This actually sounds risky and putting yourself at the mercy of how strictly they interpret the name change rules at the counter (I wouldn't try this with Jetstar).

I've never had my ID checked for a domestic flight across dozens in the last few years. It's simply not something they care about. Just check in online and board the plane with your boarding pass.

And even in the super unlikely possibility they did check they'll probably just brush it off/not even notice the order of your names.

I agree, its more risky checking in in person. I've never had my ID checked after online check-in on a domestic flight..

Absolutely do not speak to any airline staff about this.

The last thing you need is some jobsworth kicking up a fuss and next thing you know you're either not flying or potentially hundreds of dollars down the pan.

You'll be fine. This'd be an issue if you were flying international, but domestically it doesn't matter. Just carry some photo ID with you should they need to double check, but I very much doubt it'll even be picked up.

2ksauce sounds more realistic to me anyway

No issue coz it's domestic. Nobody even checks ID to see it's incorrectly ordered and nobody will make you change it. Trust the missus. No biggie, just check-in at the self checkin or however you do.

    • The only time it could be a problem is if someone else showed up for that seat and their ID has the names in the correct order! haha 😆

You could change your name by deed poll (before your flight).

I'm glad we had this talk. :+)

  • Oh, to make it really spicy, please tell me you have two last names or two first names like Mitchell Graham or George Cameron to contend with…

  • Don’t talk to anybody, scan your boarding pass, walk on the plane

Paging Mr Fred, paging Mr McCalister Fred.

  • I dunno, what would Sirhan Sirhan do?

  • just came back from Melbourne. Bris-Melb-Bris, both ways we just did kiosk Qantas check in and bag drop, scanned the boarding pass upon entering aircraft. nobody checked photo ID or whatever.

    • Thanks #1 Bell Jingle. lol

  • The last domestic flight I took we had AFP come over at boarding time and they were checking everyone's boarding pass and ID before boarding.

Not sure if this was a random security check, or if they were looking for someone in particular. But it does happen. Whether or not they would care about first/last name being reversed, who knows.

    • This definitely happened during Covid restriction times, when there were spot lockdowns and states barred certain other states from entering. I went to Cairns from Melb in Dec 2020 and AFP were checking home addresses on arrival to see if anyone was trying to get in unlawfully.
I think for the present day, the odds of this happening now are pretty small.

No and no. Its all 'self' checkin these days for domestic, no ID checks as that means staff and paying wages.
