Selling on Facebook - Paying Money Upfront for Courier?

Long story short.

I'm trying to sell Xbox One S on Facebook.

One person offered to buy at full price and wanted to use courier to pick it up and will be paying by cash on pick up. But I have to pay money up front to the courier email.

Is there a delivery company do that or is this a scam?

One thing I learn from Gumtree, never spend money to sell stuff.

Sounds like a good way to make money for the buyer.

    Scam.

  • +5

Scam for sure. The buyer could have paid the courier.

You could have made this post more interesting by making a post after you sent the money..

It's about as legit, as your search abilities.

Just out of interest… What is the courier's email address?
And are they a registered charity?

    • Service glsmonde • [email protected]

This is the email they send to me, asking for payment

      • Scammers are getting lazy these days 🤣

Either that or a legit courier company with their own mail server has outsourced to Google…

One person offer to buy full price

Yeah, ok. Doesn't seem odd at all.

Had this one recently selling a PS4. Started feeding them obviously fake details like 123 Poop St, WeeWee Town and they just kept going with the script ha.

I post stuff on Gumtree a lot, and get many of these no-feedback, no-profile-picture, no-ad, 2022 people asking me to do the exact same thing. Always really broken English and they can't seem to keep their story straight. Sometimes they'll ask you to pay with Google Play gift cards, sometimes PayPal, sometimes cash.

    Avoid.

Never had this issue selling via the Trading Post!

      • Had a very obliging newsagent that provided copies the day before.

It's the standard courier scam. Just block or ghost.

The courier scam is where they say "oh I'll pay but you need to pay for the courier as you are sending, but dont' worry the courier will bring you the cash when they pick up - just go to this website to pay plus a bit extra for shipping".

    • That is the same content in the email

Usually they send you a fake PayPal UPS shipping invoice print screen on Facebook Messenger and a fake UPS email from a gmail account.

What courier company(ies) offer a service that pays cash on pick up for a collection?

    • GLS courier, which I never hear it before.

Ok I take but I would like to come today but I am currently busy with work, I will send a GLS courier to your home to give you your money in cash and collect the item

Why the need to reference how long someone has been a member? It's so tiring and boring.

Because in the last 10 years topics like this have been discussed to death.

Tell me cookie2, if you were going to take over an account, would you choose one in regular use, or maybe have a crack at one that is still current but doesn't appear to have been used for a few years?

The ‘UPS Delivery’ Facebook Marketplace scam. How it works.
Crooks are attempting to scam online sellers by pretending to be interested in items for sale and claiming they will pay for them by sending cash to the seller via courier companies such as UPS. We explain how the scam works

    • thanks for that.

This is the last message they send me.

I decline all responsibility when the turn of this case, I reserve the right to sue you for harassment and attempted extortion of funds if inadvertently you make me the recipient of any email I contacted GLS who told me not to worry that the procedure is mandatory and irreversible under penalty of a fine of $5,000 and 2 years of imprisonment Also it should be done within the time limit, i.e. no later than 18 hours If this evening the necessary has not been done I would be obliged to file a handrail against you with the authorities.

      • +4

        A handrail? 🤣

        • Sounds worse than the fine/jail penalty.

      • Scary stuff 🤣

  • Doesnt remind of the classic nigerian scam?. Pay to unlock your millions.

    JUST DO IT!.

  • It's a scam. They ask that you pay for insurance (or something along those lines) in advance and say that the courier will bring the additional funds to pay you back, which is obviously a scam. It's amazing to me that people fall for shit like that.

I was part of a Facebook group called 'Idiots of Facebook Marketplace' and that scam was highlighted there frequently, I had never seen it in Australia until just recently and when I got two myself, it was more prevalent in the USA.

Funny enough they targeted me on 2 separate Facebook listings within the last week or so, both items were above $500+ so chances are they purposely go for high-value items so the scam has more of a chance in succeeding. The first one had a family member on their profile so I reached out to them to say that their family member's account has been hacked, receive no reply and was blocked by that family members account - Not sure what happened but I moved on.

If an account reaches out to you regarding organising a courier, report their account and Facebook will take care of it. Chances are it's someone that fell for a separate scam and provided their login details and their account got hacked, either that or the hackers have set up fresh accounts…. although word on the street is that there's a probation period with new Facebook accounts where they can't post anything on Facebook Marketplace until that expires…. Could be wrong though

Facebook Marketplace should always be treated as a 'Pickup only' marketplace to avoid getting fooked over, even from legitimate people.

My advice - report their account, then have fun with them and waste their time while getting some enjoyment out of it, eg, Make them jump through hoops, troll them etc

    • I m in the same boats as you.

Another family victim account created in 2009 was hacked. The account seem very genuine with the history. I have report the account as well.

To be honest… They almost got me…

      • I nearly got taken myself. Sounded dodgy, so just deleted, but also REPORT them.

    • It’s been highlighted here frequently!!!!

Tbh I can’t believe ppl are still posting this on ozb

      • Blame the complex hidden search function that requires user interaction….
