Check Your Shoes Are Non Slip, I Had a Nasty Fall

I had some old sketchers I was wearing even though I had bought several new shoes. I slipped on wet leaves, fell backwards and landed on my elbow. I couldnt get up as my arm was broken. There was a tree nearby I held on and was able to stand up. I am now out of action for 6 to 8 weeks, cant drive or recycle or anything

Probs wouldn't have mattered if they were non-slip if it was wet leaves… they would slip on each other taking you down.

    • +6

But you can’t sue wet leaves, can sue Skechers though.

      • +2

bad leaves - I wanna be a wombat - eats, roots, shoots, and leaves

        • +2

Ahh Grammer! A well placed comma makes all the difference!

          • +4

            @MorriJ: Grammer; grammar's evil twin.

            • @Daabido: Do I even English?
A comma is punctuation apparently anyway :).

      • Trying to sue Sketchers because you slipped on some wet leaves will see you laughed out of the courtroom with a Jester's hat on

        • The wet leaves are also relieved they won't be taken to court.

      • They're now sewn, usually glued.

cant drive or recycle or anything

    Hope you feel better Pam.

Most importantly you can still post on OzB.

  • +35

Can't recycle? Are you the one that keeps going through the recycling bins?

  • +1

Those those who run up and down escalators in the wet, take note

  • +12

Thanks for the update Pam, speedy recovery 🙏

Guess you won't need to worry about the car.

    Thanks mum

  • +2

    How old are you btw?

    • +10

I reckon 50+ at least going by the way she writes.

      • -8

lol, You really don’t like her do ya… ?

I personally think that she’s comedy gold and should be protected at all costs.

        • +1

          wt? where's the comedy gold?

          • +42

@[Deactivated]: This. All there is constant drama, such as:
            - the time she forgot her folder at a course
            - the time she lost her mobile phone charger
            - the time she lost her car keys
            - the time she got yelled at by a security guard at a supermarket (and another time by a post office employee)
            - the time she bought a car and the headlights were faulty

Now she'll be accusing me of bullying here, but I'm not bullying. These are threads she has posted herself. This is why she attracts the comments she does.

            • +4

              @kerfuffle: lol

Alotta drama for one person & quite consistent too

Kinda same, same but slightly different to SlavOz's posts - maybe they're related?

            • +7

@kerfuffle: And it’s either a well crafted troll masquerading as this bumbling clueless lady or it’s genuinely someone that’s down on their luck and gets a kick out of sharing all their misfortunes with the world….
Either way, I think they are hilarious and It’s not a coincidence that so many people are actively subscribed to @screensaver’s posts and flock to it like bees to honey.

              • @Gervais fanboy: hence why I said 50+

                • +3

@kerfuffle: And if Pam is real, she’s probably 50+. Yes.
From your previous comments and the ones from now, I think you are taking her a bit too seriously. When you can just enjoy it.
That’s all, it wasn’t meant as a dig or anything.

                  • @Gervais fanboy: I think she wants you to take her seriously, not as a joke.

                    • +3

@kerfuffle: There’s also a very good chance that they are just a troll..

I think she wants you to take her seriously

Even if that’s true, then I am sure they don’t want to be mocked either.

                      • +2

@Gervais fanboy: Their constant drama posting leads to them being mocked. I had six examples, but can easily find more.

I am sure there’s heaps more and I am not contesting you on that.
But you are looking at her through the lens of your own reality and sanity.
Some people are different and even though it might look like they are being deliberate in their behaviour and could easily control it but quite often they can’t. They are just…. different.

Anyways, I still feel it’s some creative troll that’s too committed to the cause and not an actual person.

Would believe that a bit more if they didn't change their username away from using their 'real' name (hellopam to screensaver)

                            • @spackbace: So her actual name is Pam and went with the username ‘HelloPam’, not HelloIAmPam Or HiCallMePam but ‘HelloPam’ ?

                            • +1

@spackbace: I think they are a creative (one of an increasing number on here) & I reckon they got a kick out of other members uncovering their previous username as it means their 'schtick' is noticed

@johnwinds: Poor Pam…one arm tied in front of her back and she still managed to fight the good fight from the keyboard…only to have those literary gems unpublished…

        • I agree. Saw this post title and author come up and it a really made me happy clicking on it.

  • +11

You slip over and injure yourself but one of the bigger annoyances is that you cannot recycle? 😂😂😂😂

  • +21

You could tell this was a Pam post just from the title alone.

    • +1

      old sketchers

Rubber soles harden over time and lose grip qualities.

You only have yourself to blame Pam.

Edit: sorry kerfuffle, was meant to be a new thread.

      • +1

As a sketches owner for 2 years and running, I have been hanging onto these while they are on their very last legs, partially because they are more comfortable than the shoes I replaced them with.. I can concur that when the outer sole is worn down and you are on the mid sole they are slippery AF. Nothing to do with hardening of the shoes, just he mid sole is soft and has no grip, and is sanded down by the constant walking on concrete.

On that note, I think @screensaver is a real person and not a troll, but maybe someone who can't distinguish very well between what belongs on more personal social media, or public forums. Or maybe they think this is better posted somewhere people can't identy them personally.

And no I won't be deadnaming her with her previous name

    • I clicked to confirm exactly this. ^^

  • +2

    Oh no

    Anyways

  • +1

surprised it wasnt some topic around how u are going to sue yhe council for having slippery leaves on the path etc lolz

    • early days… plenty of spare time to pen the next chapter…

      • She’s got 6-8 weeks to compile a convoluted list of demands. It’s coming!

  • +9

I can sympathise with you. Even with shoes you think should be "grippy" you can slip. I've slipped on wet metal, wet grates, etc. I've tripped over a couple of times on uneven footpaths due to tree roots and poor lighting. In one case I broke my little finger and split the webbing between my fingers.

It knocks the stuffing out of you and then you have to recover from the injury.

Best of luck for your recovery.

    • The worst is when you’re jogging across a zebra crossing in your best double pluggers and they just let loose. Half of you continued forward the rest of you goes in every other conceivable direction.

Poor Pam. Advanced age is no fun. We would miss you far too much should something serious happen!

    • Yes, it's such a surprise and definitely throws you for a loop for a while.

  • +1

Lesson hard learned I'm sure. From now on only wear roller blades and you'll be safe from this ever happening again.

    • +1

Ahh, my roller blades tale. This ended up with me being knocked unconscious, having a trip in an ambulance, a CAT scan and in plaster for a broken arm.

  • +4

I read the title before seeing the user and just new who it was.

  • +7

I bought Dr Martens Slip Resistant designed for restaurant workers.. I can run around on oily floors so easily !!

  • +11

sorry to hear about your arm. get better soon.

  • I think it's not just how worn your shoes are.
I remember wearing two different pairs of shoes back to back when they were both basically brand new and the gripiness can can depend on how the grip is designed.
One pair was really slippery on the driveway while the other pair was not at all. What's weird is the slipperier pair were running shoes.

    • Forgot to write one pair was slippery "on a rainy day".

  • Dunlop Volley's herringbone design FTW.

Honestly though, any half decent rubber (soft) sole will prevent slips, even on wet painted lines on concrete/bitumen.

    Good reminder post, OP.

  • +1

Those must be some giant wet banana leaves.

    Get well soon, HiPam!

  • What a strange thread.

    • +1

Looks at who OP is, you must be new here.

  • +3

    Sorry to hear.

    Get well soon Pam.

Would send some flowers.. but can't find any without leaves..

Look forward to the next instalment.

  • +4

Sound message. Get well soon. If you haven’t got help already there’s services to help with getting better if you need it - best to get a referral early to minimise wait time eg if you need physio etc.

  • +1

Even non-slip shoes eventually wear out and need to be replaced.

    • I think op meant when the shoes gets worn out then it will slip. Thats usually the first sign to just get rid of them and buy a new one

  • Had something similar happen to me but fell onto outdoor tiles.

Where abouts on your arm is it broken? Have a feeling I fractured my elbow but didn't get it checked cos.

  • +5

Oh Pam, another thigh slapper. Hope your arm gets better soon. And I took your advice and got some non-slip shoes if I am ever out walking around on wet leaves.

    • +8

      lol

A Bunnings customer service guy suggested those sandals as a budget buy when I recently requested assistance with how to best aerate the lawn. My husband wasn't impressed with the reviews after I sms'd him a link although we laughed at a few of the creative ones with this one by 'Phill', I think, deserving of an 'OzB innovator' award:

      Crap product very dissapointed

Brought today to repair lawn where vehicles had compacted soil. Straps too short for a normal sized foot (ankle straps). Front buckles come loose after 2 steps. Better off sticking a fork up my backside and rolling on the lawn. Save your money or buy something else. These are going straight in the bin.

No,I do not recommend this product.

      • +4

Now that was comedic gold. Thank you :) love stumbling on these reviews, though usually they are on Amazon us

        • +1

          You're welcome :)

  • +2

Remarkably adept at one handed typing… 🤔

  • +1

I had some old sketchers that the tread was wearing really thin on. I put them in the washing machine and what was left of the soles hardened and made them way too slippery. I was so sad to throw them in the bin. I had them for over 12 years.
Maybe it’s time for you to say goodbye to your shoes.

    • Interesting. In this forum many people are saying part of the shoe catches so it’s more that it has too much grip in a certain spot. But there’s also a couple of comments saying they are slippery.

Personally when I’ve tried on sketchers I find the memory foam component to be unhelpful and whilst comfortable not supportive so haven’t bought them.

The other thing to consider is that people buying sketchers are looking for a comfort shoe so might include people with existing foot issues and therefore more likely to fall anyway, eg older people. ie it might be the demographic who buys sketchers more than the shoe contributing to the fall. In your situation I’m sure the wet leaves didn’t help.

Regardless, all the best for your recovery.

      • i have a new worry, the discharge report says shoulder slightly displaced and the word surgery is there. I dont see the specialist until tuesday; I cant have surgery, my house is like a sauna in summer

        • +3

Wait and see what the specialist says on Tuesday, but if they say you need surgery best to do it to prevent long term issues like pain or loss of function. It does sound like a nasty injury.

I know it’s not possible for everyone but reverse cycle air conditioning is fantastic and not too expensive to run with the new efficient systems (just expensive for the unit cost and installation).

Is there anyone you can stay with temporarily if you have to have surgery? It can be good to have support for at least a couple days.

        • +4

Neck of humerus is an unpleasant structural fracture. I’m sorry you got injured. About half of them need surgical fixation. That being said, it’s quite a simple surgery and doesn’t impact much/at all in recovery times.

If it’s displaced and can’t be relocated adequately with a backslab/non surgical alignment, then avoiding surgery will only cause you pain and loss of motion. And again, will make little to no difference to your recovery time if you do need surgery.

With all the rain and crappy weather about, this really is an important time to stop, take a breath and take note that we are not invincible Pam. Sometimes we need to slow down and realise we are not as agile as we once were, and it’s a brutal and sickening realisation to a fiercely independent person. Try to take note of potential and actual riaks and actively manage them- sounds silly but a hard change in mindset will help keep you safe.

      • I have never ever seen sketches ad using aged care residents as models in fact always the opposite always young peeps in sketches ads.

        • +2

I see a lot of middle aged+ people wearing them, despite the marketing.

          • @morse: Well 60 year olds can drive BMW AND WEAR ARMANI but these are not the maker's target when you look at their marketing.

    • lol

Was that forum thread your inspo for this post?

      • +3

no, i did a search to see if it had happened to anyone else. i am glad i did, i found out about the apple watch and also to photograph these shoes

        • +2

I commend you on your posts, Pam - you're a stickler for detail, you never waiver from the 'persona' & most importantly, you don't waffle on unlike some others.
