It’s the previous version and only discounted on this colour but a pretty good deal at $30
Free delivery with onepass or click and collect
Same price at Catch which seems to be coming from target anyway.

Yeah it's the old model. I have the Clip 4 and it's a great little portable speaker, and at $30 it's half price. But I personally would spend the extra on the newer one with USB C so I can stick to one cable for everything.
I've started to use magnetic charging cables where there are adapters for usb-c, micro-usb, lightning. It's been great. Granted I don't care about data transfer usually or quick charging.
Where do you get these?
@defunct: I bought a couple of these
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133729699671?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…
And they turned out pretty good so I bought some more. Each pack comes with 1 micro-b, 1 usb-c, 1 lightning adapter and a single magnetic cable.
I use them everywhere around the house now.
@killz111: Are the three various magnet connector plugs included?
If so that is a decent price then, as long as they charge at 2.1A and are strong.
@ozhunter68: They're not bad. Yes 1 pack contains 3 connectors. I ended up buying 8. 5 cables and associated connectors were enough for me and all my devices and the other 3 are backup since the connectors seem proprietary.
@killz111: Did you buy 8, 5 or other number of cable/sets?
@ozhunter68: I bought 1 first to try it out. Then got 4 then 3 more as backup.
@killz111: They must be good thema. Yeah, I usually buy one to test first, then follow up as needed. Think I got my first magnetic cable before USB C became a thing, so had to get new brand/style. These are great value if good and you don't need data transfers.
@ozhunter68: Yeah I tried hard to find magnetic usb-c 3.1 cables. Haven't found any so far.
@killz111: Had a second look at the listing, but nothing about data transfer speeds, or did I miss it. Many at least do USB 2 speeds, but some don't, and as you said, none do USB 3 speeds yet.
@killz111: how interesting.
Any issues with leaving the plugs in your devices?
Any issues with the magnetic connection?
@andresampras: I leave the plugs in all my devices. That way 1 cable can charge all devices. The magnetic connection is okay. Strong enough to not be affected by cable moving but weak enough to be severable on a quick pull. Like the old MacBook magsafe plugs. I use it on my Quest 2 and had the added benefit of being able to pick it up without worrying about dragging the charge cable.
yeah magnetic charging cables are the answer. I put them all on my microUSB (e.g. All my Bose wireless headphones, cordless screwdrivers, etc), USB-C (all my phones, GoPro/dji cameras, etc), Apple devices (ipads/iphones), been using them for years and it's great. I leave them plugged in without any issues. btw, get the high voltage ones so they charge faster, e.g. my magnetic usb-c cables charge my Samsung galaxy from 5 to 90%+ in 15mins I think. Each cable charges at different rate, I've found you need to experiment and buy a few different brands to get the perfect one. Over the years I've found some don't even work with iPads, some charge slow, some charge fast but with only certain brands.
@noshopping: Yeah I just give up on fast charging since PD, QC and whatever BS apple builds into their devices means not all chargers and cables can be used to give maximum. Give me 10w consistently and I am happy.
@noshopping: I'll give you an example, this cable https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001652926393.html
charges Samsung Galaxy phones at blistering speeds, any other brand and the speed is average, but for Sammies, it's amazing. Don't know what's in em but even faster rated cables don't charge as fast as this (for SGs). Ultimately, you have to experiment to see which one is ideal ;)
Note, as in the OP's descrition, both at Catch and Target directly it's that silver/gray colour only.
I ordered on catch and they canceled it.
same, order via catch and got cancelled.
Good speaker, specially at this price.
What do people use these for? You can get far superior audio in a portable speaker than these tiny things, for ~ the same price or maybe a bit more
I hang one off my jumper at work cos i cant use earpods and i take my podcast with me as i walk.
fair enough, interesting use case
Does that annoy others at work?
I'd use it for when I'm traveling, light weight compared to a larger speaker so I can take everything as carry on instead of checking my luggage.
For its size, design, quality & ease of application with the integrated carabiner, It preforms much better than my larger/bulkier Sony speaker (couple of years older with micro usb also), which was more expensive even at rrp.
who else had to google "carabiner"?
Only people who’ve never done rock climbing ;)
@WhyAmICommenting: I have never done rock climbing but I know what a carabiner is.
I'm interested in rock climbing though :)
Entertaining other travellers on public transport
I've got one of them for a few years now and it's been my favourite companion and still using it almost daily. Sound quality is not bad for the size and price.
Sample of usages:
- Randomly hang it around the house while doing chores (i.e. Bathroom cleaning, workshop)
- Taking a bath / shower (this thing is water proof, so safe to hang within the wet area
- Gardening
- Longer holidays to short getaways (small and lightweight)
- Hang on the cot and play lullabies for the little ones
Granted there are better one's out there now, but for $30 you cannot go wrong, highly recommend.

I have three different portable speakers of different sizes and this one gets the most use because it is so easy to carry everywhere. Sure you're not going to run a dance party from it, but it you just want some audio at normal sound levels then it does a good enough job.
I do night fill in Coles. Nothing is more satisfying than drowning out the audio diarrhoea that is Coles Radio.
why not earbuds?
Generally earbuds/plugs aren't allowed, but it does vary from store to store (depending on who's managing/captaining).
@PinzVidz: Could be a hazard when using earbuds because you can’t hear the forklift coming.
@goraygo: They don't use forklifts in store, they have electric and manual pallet jacks which can
be silent enough to not hear coming with or without earbuds (mainly the electric pallet jacks)
Depending on your department a night-fill shift can start at 2p.m and can end at 12p.m. There are still customers at most Coles until at least 5p.m.
Most managers act more like teachers, enforcing small rules that make them feel like they're improving the store, employee productivity or safety while letting large problems go by the wayside. Earbuds are the perfect thing to make a rule on and enforce in this case, as there're few ways to effectively hide them in your ears. Other common complaints are "You're pulling that roll cage facing the WRONG direction" or "Don't ride that pallet jack in front of me again or you're fired".
Back to why earbuds are controlled substances when on shift at Coles. The first time they tried cracking down on it, the purported reason was that "customers have been complaining." I dunno about you guys, but I don't complain when a worker has their earbuds in because I'm not that entitled. I can deal with them taking a second to pop it out and help me (obviously would make less sense on a checkout bay where you're constantly interacting with customers).I especially don't leave a negative review or request to speak to management about it, but maybe some do.
The second time it's been relayed to me that earbuds are prohibited is because "they're unsafe". There was supposedly a practice drill on a day I wasn't there, where they called everyone to the back and someone was still in the aisles. This was blamed on earbuds. They may've been the culprit, I'm sure there's other factors though. (E.g PA speaker not loud/clear enough to hear, worker could have been deaf).
If it were truly a safety concern, deaf people and customers wearing headphones or two earbuds would be denied entry in to the store as it's just as unsafe for them. If it were just about safety, one earbud would be allowed in while the store was open to customers. For these reasons I've concluded it's a bunch of baloney that makes the managers feel powerful enforcing (especially the older ones)
For ways to hide your earbuds, you can wear a beanie, grow your hair quite long or the real ballsy option of just having one in and facing the shelves you're filling with that side. If management comes you have to have your head turned just the right way when speaking to them to obfuscate the earbud and be able to hear what they're saying.
It's evident that I've complained a lot about this and you didn't ask for a TED talk but you got one. When the alternative is listening to Coles Radio with the same songs week/day after week/day, you're going to take your chances. The thing that pisses me off the most about it is when that lady comes on to advertise Coles. It starts with a jingle that goes-
"Today… Is gonna be a good day… For you and me… For you and me." It's very patronising to hear on a daily basis. She then sounds like the happiest person in the whole store, saying "Here at Coles, we friggin' rock, bringing you specials and stuff!" (Not verbatim, previous one was). The worst thing is that still happens when the store is closed, so they're advertising exclusively to their workers
TLDR: No earbuds because it makes management feel powerful, done under the guise of safety and customers complaining about minimum wage workers
@SpainKing: Sounds like some managers wouldn't be OK with people playing music out loud either via the OP JBL speaker.
I'm guessing it comes down to the individual store and employees.
To be fair to the managers, I can imagine some staff using the "music too loud, didn't hear you/announcement/whatever" excuse quite willingly to get out of doing stuff. As with many rules and regulations, must often cater for the lowest common denominator to keep things from falling into chaos.
@andresampras: I know with the podcasts I listen to, I'd be getting a lot of funny looks and far more complaints from customers about obscenity if I was broadcasting it over speakers
It definitely does come down to the store/people, in my experience all stores have managers that will try to enforce this rule though, especially not having 2 earbuds in (which is fair)
If staff are going to try and lie to you so they don't have to do their jobs, I think they'll make up other excuses to get around it. That means you have bad team members. An interesting point I hadn't considered from management's point of view though
I still don't believe that workers should be subjected to 40 hours of Coles Radio a week just because managers may have to deal with excuses about not being heard. At my store, it wouldn't be considered a good enough excuse to begin with
@SpainKing: Ohhhh that patronising shit at 8pm every night is bloody awful.
Mostly travelling and the mic on this speaker is reasonably good for quick conference call over mobile phone.
Out of stock on the Kmart site, still available on the catch site though.
Have you tried Target instead of Kmart :)
haha oops my bad, Target! These are great in the shower, hard to go back once you start using it in the bathroom for audiobooks, podcasts or music.
100% that's what I was using mine as, the integrated carabiner combined with design & overall quality is perfect. With my larger square shaped Sony I have a loop where I can attach a carabiner, but it's heavier & doesn't meet the "fit & form" of this unit, plus the quality isn't as good on full volume. Another advantage is the JBL controls the device volume, while with my Sony I have to put the volume up on my device then it separately.
Tried to order via Target three times - twice for delivery, once for click and collect - and received a 'your order could not be processed' email not long after ordering.
Tried on Catch and it's not offering me free shipping with One Pass.
Argh!
Catch doesn’t have the onepass banner on the listing but has a free shipping icon. When added it cart, it adds $9 shipping.
Maybe worth taking a screenshot of the listing to show the free shipping and asking catch for a refund post purchase.
Or C & C at a Kmart/hub (90% +- of all Australian population lives within 10 Km, apperantly lol).
Yes, didn’t see the C&C option.
Seems shipping is free if you add 2 of them to your cart. Assume it’s a minimum spend to get free shipping.
@Webluce: Yes, I got two mailed out free post (from Target), as the c & C option for me was far away and forced
me to travel there. One of these makes a nice gift anyway.
Thanks OP.
@ozhunter68: Yeah, I couldn't even get click and collect to work on Target's website - order just ended up cancelled.
Did a click and collect through Catch for the same store, and it worked for some reason. Who knows!
Thanks OP.
thank you, got one for my daughter for christmas who is currently using a shitty shower speaker everywhere, so hopefully an upgrade.
Or $1 (donation) for a good sounding small Bluetooth cube, including delivery - simple quick mods there to make it better.
Wow I ended up on this Twitter tear down of the SD drive contents (a virus) from clicking through that deal’s comments. https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1322287412597305345?s=20&t=…
Still reading… it’s also a button battery charger! Incredible value.
Takes about 1 min to remove SD card. Once removed - all other content disappears.
Added black electrical tape to cover display, to sit beside bed at night.
Didn't bother adding music to SD card (selected by buttons) as music on phone is easier to select & can use its equaliser etc.
Got 5 of those. Took ages to receive but got it eventually.
thanks :) bought one for the shower audiobook/podcast
Do you know of any third-party app that can let iOS pair with multiple speakers and play music on all speakers at the same time?
not possible via bluetooth, unless the speakers themselves have TWS or some other pairing functionality.
Or you could use smart speakers, but then it's a wifi/ethernet connection
Thanks for your reply.
I had some old speakers sitting and eating dust so was wondering if they all can be used at once in sync.
Does it go loud enough to hear over shower noise?
About 4 left in stock in Ipswich, QLD Riverlink Target
Great for blasting on the bus
People like you should be banned from using public transportation.
Bugger. Closest stock to Sydney is at Newcastle… Next best option is $50 at Catch or $60 for Clip 4 at TGG Commercial. I think Clip 4 has enough good features to justify double the price.
Anyone know how this compares to a logitech x50? I got that for 15 bucks agews ago and no one has ever complained about the sound quality, and it gets more use than the x300 we have. Doesn't have a carobiner but does have a hole to be hung off something.
Alternately how is it compared to a Google Home speaker? I have one of those too, trying to get an idea of the sound quality and volume
Ordered from Catch and got a refund a few hours later due to out of stock as they are sourcing from Target anyway. Probably should mark it as out of stock?
I think this should be marked as OOS.
Micro USB :(
Not bad for $30 though!
