Can someone please help me understand the point of these things? My console is my Gaming/Blu-Ray and my TV has streaming apps built-in. Why does this exist?

    • +3

      Why does this exist?

Because not everyone has a console?

    • +1

I have issues with 4k movies on Plex through TV apps and XBOX Series X sometimes, so considering one of these.

Also great upscaling to 4K for files of less quality.

      • My friend said the same thing whenever we watched stuff at his house. Over time he realised the shield was better and we didnt go back. Once you install Kodi you can do pretty much anything. Also an excellent streaming device. And if you're so inclined, you can install a whole number of emulators on this and it'll run brilliant, everything from snes to mame to gamecube. The entire lot.

    • +1

I bought it because the android TV UI on my 2018 Sony TV was clunky and awful and I couldn't handle it anymore. Shield has been 100x faster and actually works normally compared to the Sony software. I'm annoyed that I had to get external hardware to have a half decent TV experience but it is what it is.

I bought the Shield mostly for storage over network (drag and drop files on external storage via my PC) but I have since discovered Syn cler which has been incredible. Won't go into detail about this.

    • +2

The streaming apps will perform much better on this than on your TV.

    • +2

Kayo, YouTube, Plex, Netflix, Amazon all in the same place.
U can sideload Kodi to open up the wormhole.

      • Is it hard to sideload Kodi? I've got a MiBox S that runs installs Kodi straight from Google Play but it's a little slow…

        • +1

install kodi from google apps as easy as install (any app) from google apps.

          • +2

            @sachz: Excellent, even easier.

            • @sween64: Apologies yes sachz is correct. I haven't done it in a while 😂

  • +2

bought (yet another) one, think later.

i now have more nvidia shield pro's at home than i have tv's at home.

but, that's the oz bargain way.

suggestions on what to do this my n-th nvidia shield pro, appreciated…. !???

    • You can never have too many. I have 3 pros

      • +1

        Can I like … Raid 5 them?

    • Use it as a paper weight to stop your papers blowing away when working outside?

    • Run as a Plex Server (not player)

  • +1

Is buying a Raspberry Pi a better choice?

    • Depends what you doing with either. A raspberry pi dies trying to stream 4k. Whereas this just chugs along.

    • +1

This is way better than Pi plus Pi4 isn't that cheap either. No lag what so ever.

    • @boomrada "This is way better than Pi plus Pi4 isn't that cheap either. No lag what so ever."

Is it now possible to buy a Raspberry Pi?… I have been trying to purchase them since August last year without success,
due to global short supply of chips.

Anyhow, I have both. (actually have had Asus Nexus Android TV, WD TV and a HTPC) and my pick is the Shield. I have been running one since 2017. Never missed a beat. Nvidia keep it up to date. It works with out falling over.

Also have the Amazon Fire TV 4K Max, Chromecast for Google TV and Chromecast Ultra devices. The 5 year old Nvidia Shield Pro (2017 edition) still wins streets ahead of any of these devices. My second choice is the Chromecast for Google TV, although you can't run too many apps on it as it has limited memory (no expansion) and runs out of storage space very quickly, particularly as app updates for Android TV keep getting larger.

This is a good price for the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 4K Media Player @ $249.00 (also lowest price on 3xCamels). If my current unit died, I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with this now. There is a long pause between hardware updates with Nvidia Shields as they don't bring new models out for the sake of it because they are well specced and reliable to begin with.

  • +1

I have a vodafone tv, how does it compare? Worth the upgrade?

    • +1

Fat 32 vs NTFS.so you can play files over 4 gig. My voda struggles with 4K. Doesnt have a tv tuner though like the voda.

      • thanks for the reply :)

  • I really like mine but since getting a soundbar there's been some hit and miss in terms of CEC, not blaming the shield but it's a link in the chain.

Also I've had a couple of freezes in the last month and the UI is ever so slightly slower. I don't know if my unit is failing or if the latest updates have had an impact.

    • +1

I've had CEC issues on mine since the last Android update too. Seems to take about 2 or 3 minutes from turning on to respond to the TVs remote, but the shield remote works instantly. It's weird, as this used to be flawless.

      • Same issue reversed, tv remote is fine but the sheild remote needs a few goes to wake up the tv.

      • +2

it's an issue with the 9.1 firmware - all HDMI CEC remotes don't work for the first minute or so when waking up the shield and you're stuck using the original remote.

They rolled out a hotfix that you can sign up for using your SHIELD's serial number here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/4986…

        • Legend! Thanks heaps!

  • -7

    Better off with a console…

Just pay $249 and lie to your self saying "you're upgrading for $500 the hardware"

However if you could shove a 4090 gpu's onto this system and it stacks up with every other older(newer) iteration Nvidia sells with drivability compatibility then sure absolutely buy this device, that is if it's a intel nuc i7, otherwise your now apart of the hype train people keep advising in regards to Nvidia.

But if it's a Roku, firestick, Chromecast 4k, then why bother buying it.

    • +4

      What?

    • +2

My series x can’t do 90gb remux files

      • -6

It seems you're a special person… We can't all be a special person.

      • Same

    • +1

So someone should buy a console instead of this if they don't have a console and want a media player?

      • -2

"But if it's a Roku, firestick, Chromecast 4k, then why bother buying it."

        • But it's not a Roku, firestick or Chromecast 4k. It's an NVIDIA Shield Pro?

          • -2

@Domingo: There's your problem, your reasonings all over the place.

If you want a shield buy one, it's your money honey.

            • +2

@LoserScott: I already have one, and it's great and I recommend it to people who have the need for one.

I don't have a console other than a Switch and I don't want one, so I am better off with this than a console.

You stated your very confusing opinion and then provided zero clarification upon questioning, which is of great help to others on an online forum.

            • +1

              @LoserScott:

There's your problem, your reasonings all over the place.

I'm actually confused by your reasoning. The product being posted here is the NVIDIA Shield but you don't mention it in your list of "why bother buying it".

Did you miss a word? E.g. "But if it's like a Roku, firestick, Chromecast 4k, then why bother buying it."

There's also a lot of broken English in your original comment, which makes it hard to work out what you're trying to say…

    • What's this language you speak

  • -4

If you want to play local media from NAS, get a Zidoo Z9X. For streaming, Apple TV 4K. For something mediocre at both, get this.

    • ATV 4K is good for NAS streaming, right? Just need the right app?

      • +1

Couple of issues with Apple TV I are doesn’t support pass through of lossless audio codecs which means you won’t get Atmos or DTS-X in full UHD bluray “backups”. Though it will decode TrueHD/DTS-MA to 7.1 PCM.
Also doesn’t support the Dolby Vision profile 7 that’s used on Blurays so will fall back to standard HDR10
Otherwise if you don’t care about that stuff, then Infuse works well on ATV

        • Thanks, I'm sending my NAS files to an Odroid N2 which still does well for my needs but just looking at options

          • +1

@hen dawg: Odrioid N2 is better at what it does than the Shield and Apple TV. They just have the ability to also have official streaming apps.

Personally I run an N2 and Apple TV. Best device for both tasks.

        • Shield doesn't support Dolby Vision profile 7 either. It does support profile 8 though. Not particularly useful though since there is no profile 8 content.

          • @tp0: Not sure which profile it supports but it has no trouble showing any DV content I throw at it since the Android TV 11 update early this year. Including in MKV form which I can’t seem to play on anything else (including the TV that has no trouble playing it via the shield).

            • @[Deactivated]: It will light up the Dolby Vision logo on your TV a lot but often it isn't actually playing the content correctly. For profile 7 content it discards the enhancement layer and displays colours incorrectly.

              • @tp0: I had a look at why it’s working for me, and it seems to be because all my content is profile 5 or 8 (actually contrary to your ‘there is no profile 8 content’ most seems to be profile 8…

Profile 7 is only used in blu rays, so not relevant when the source is or was streaming. If your source is blu ray you should probably just use the blu ray….

                • @[Deactivated]: Someone has converted it to profile 8 likely from a profile 7 (Blu-Ray) source.

                  • @tp0: Given they’re releasing things first or for streaming these days it’s probably the other way around.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Streaming is profile 5.

                      • @tp0: It can be either, but it’s mostly 8 now.

                        https://developer.dolby.com/tools-media/sample-media/video-s…

                        https://developer.apple.com/av-foundation/Incorporating-HDR-…

Apple is all in on 8 for the iPhone but 5 for the Apple TV (weirdly), Amazon will do either in AWS but have largely settled on 8 now they’re supporting it side by side with HDR10+. Netflix did have a lot of profile 5 but they do support both, so it’s probably going to be more and more 8 as that seems to be the standard the industry is settling on for mastering.

                        • @[Deactivated]: I hope not since profile 5 is technically the superior format. It uses a proprietary colour space to achieve greater than 10 bit colour.

Profile 8 is a simpler delivery format though since it can be SDR, HDR10 or HLG compatible.

The Apple document you linked regarding profile 8 is regarding creation, not consumption. iPhone cameras can shoot video in Dolby Vision and use profile 8.4 (HLG compatible) for full compatibility across SDR, HLG and Dolby Vision compatible displays. Profile 5 is still very much the preferred format for media consumption.

      • I use mr MC for nas streaming from apple 4k but it cant pass through atmos true hd, which I need.

I just got this shield to do that only.

    • And for game streaming to the TV from an Nvidia powered PC!

      • Can anything else do that?

    • -1

Lol why downvote? Nothing against Shield I just speak fact. The very best option for streaming and local playback requires an AppleTV and a separate device

      • -1

Nothing against Shield I just speak fact. The very best option for streaming and local playback

lol don't you think if you were "speaking fact" that you would've said the only option…

The very fact that there are options means it cannot be a fact.

        • -2

AppleTV is indisputably the best device for streaming, but not for local playback due to the reasons I gave. Shield will do local playback better than ATV, but there are better options. Hence if you want the best experience you get AppleTV + something else that’s not Shield. IMHO Zidoo Z9X

  • +2

I should have bought this earlier, plays x265 4K HDR without any issue, wirelessly on my nas

  • Is there any reason to upgrade from a 4k google Tv chromecast? I have no issues atm watching 4k remuxes through my TVs inbuilt media player and chromecast handles everything else

    • One of the reasons I upgraded was because I have external speakers with an IR remote and I couldn't control them with the Chromecast remote.

It also does some upscaling which is pretty divisive - I like it especially for older content, I know others who don't.

But unless you have a specific use case you can't do with your current setup, no real reason to upgrade.

  • Any idea will TGG price match Amazon?

    • They should, but will be dependent on the employee.

      • Thanks. Let me give a try anyway

    • I find HN & TGG's price match is a joke. Last time I tried, both HN and TGG declined because "Products with pricing set significantly lower than the recommended retail price or market value".

  • Look I really want this, but would anyone please point me to a prior discussion why I need this above my Sony 2021 TV's Google TV?
Worth risking it, wife is going to question me again, lol

    • +1

For me the super fast and fluid UX (over build in android) is the primary reason.

You can also run Plex media server and/or standard SMB server in the background to stream your media.

Great remote. So much easier to navigate than a standard remote.

4k upscaling. This is very impressive on older content .

    • If you’re streaming new 4k content from the web the TV is fine, if you’re locally hosting your own content or viewing older lower res content this is better. (For one it can host a Plex server).

  • One amazon review says no usb on pro model. Can someone confirm it has a usb port for an ssd drive?

    • +1

The pro has 2x USB 3.0 ports. They must be confused with the standard tube version which has none.

    • +1

      Connector Type ‎USB, Ethernet, HDMI

    • +1

      3 out of 4 photos lists/shows 2 USB ports

  • I've been wanting to get the Shield for ages but i reckon the new Amazon Fire Cube looks a bit better, plus the voice control whilst a bit of a gimmick can come in handy (I know you can do this with Google assistant but the Amazon one is a little smarter).

    • +1

I need Dolby TrueHD and DTS which the new cube won’t do.

  • can you connect usb storage and watch mkv?

  • Is this better than a 4k Amazon fire stick it seems slow loading videos.

  • Taking gaming out of the equation, for someone who will be primarily streaming and wants the option to watch content via the USB port would this be a better purchase than the 3rd gen Fire TV Cube that is being released here in a couple of weeks time.

Or am I comparing 'apples with oranges' here.

    Thanks.

    • +2

I've went from the old FireTV Box 4k (pre cube) to the shield, and although both did most of what I wanted (streaming apps + solid playback over local network with Kodi) I went to the shield for a couple reasons:
      - native app support. Don't need to try and sideload kodi/kayo etc like on the firetv
      - DTS passthrough within Kodi (not sure if that's an issue in the new fireTVs but it was in the old one

Aside from that, and odd ball stuff like the AFL grandfinal only being available in the 7 plus app on some devices (shield included, FTV not) I don't think there's a huge difference in my experience. It's nice though with the shield not looking like a prime video device first, and a full media player second.

      • +1

Thank you for the detailed reply

  • People keep saying a new Shield TV will be released soon too as its about time.

    • Just because its about time dont mean its around the corner. They been saying the same thing with the nintendo switch that a pro model model is around the corner and yet here we are. Nothing.

      • Dont know about the switch, But Shield TVs seemed to always have a cycle before the next release. Covid would have messed it up a bit. But it was 2015, 2017, 2019. Other reason people are excited for the new release is that the previous ones havent had much hardware processing updates but the newer one is stated to be a bigger upgrade. If it happens, its hard to say.

        • Dont get me wrong. Im all for a newer version. But its clear these companies have their own timeline compared to our expectations.

          • @xoom: Yeah not saying this is a bad deal, I was just stating that the new version is constantly being talked about as coming out "soon".

I am excited about the new version, I have too many of the previous versions although dont have the Pro of the 2019 (this version) but I am not sure i can justify it since i have spares of the previous models as it is and not enough has changed. I do have the Tube version of this and I gotta say i have some bugs / glitches with it (needing restarts , ethernet sometimes disconnects or apps dont work) that i never encountered with the 2017 or 2015 versions, I am not sure if i am the only one.

I sometimes wonder if its because i bought the Tube second hand and if the guy sold me a dud after he came across these issues and if its a hardware issue.

  • Thanks! Finally got one!

  • Me Mibox still boxing good. Should i buy

    • Yes. Do it.

    • I'm torn as well. Mi Box S is solid most of the time.

    • I've got a Mibox too, going on 4 years strong. Why this over Mibox?

  • I cannot recommend these enough. Such a great purchase and still gets updates to this day

  • What's it like for upscaling live sport to 4k. I watch mostly NBA and AFL.

  • Next Gen Shield = frame generation. Turn 30 into 60 or 60 into 120 on the pro model.

  • Just install syncler and say bye bye to all steaming sites

    • shhhh. But yeah Syncler w/ RD is incredible.

      • You know the drill My Man

  • Anyone know what the benefit of this over using an LG C1 apps would be?

I currently use the Plex, YouTube, streaming services and FTA apps on the LG tv which work well. But the UI is a bit laggy and it doesn't have "continue watching" on the home page of the TV which is a bit frustrating at times.

Anyone know if there would be any benefit to using this instead of the TV's apps?

    • Hey mate, I have some apps sideloaded from other countries like 'Hotstar' from india which works very well with surfshark vpn.

I also have kodi and stremio connected to real debrid on it, it plays DV vision files with no problems. I have a firestick 4k too but shield is much better.
