Considering OP is a power user, I doubt it

The government I work for use them, can be very problematic with monitors dropping off and not working, HP say they're non serviceable and to just dispose of them I have about 5 at my work after updating to the latest firmware the USB and ethernet still work but will not output to the monitors, strangely enough if I plug in my phone or a Mac it works fine..

    • Yep, we have had plenty fail too.

    • Been seeing similar issues with the USB C G5 as well? Or do you not have them at all? I haven't brought these into work yet - right now I'm thinking not to bother.

      • Yes we have both versions both have the same issues,I found replacing monitors would sometimes bring them back but such a waste of time troubleshooting these all the time, we are considering swapping to Dell WD22 as a solution

      @solidussnake

Update the BIOS to the latest version if it hasn't been already. Government are notorious for having outdated drivers on there devices. Or they have months old driver updates in Software Centre instead of getting the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.

      • Yeah have tried latest bios updates, different multiple laptops even newer 11th/12th gen machines and no luck

        • @solidussnake

What branded laptop are you using with the dock? HP?

          • @Sean8802: HP Dragon fly and Elite book 830GB they all work fine then suddenly one day they stop outputting to one monitor…

            Have tried different DP cables
Different laptops and also different PSU for the docks
            Bios updates etc.

            • @solidussnake: @solidussnake Interesting, if other docks work that those laptops then it's obviously the dock which is the issue. If that's the case your IT support can reach out to HP for a CSR (customer self replacement). HP will send the replacement dock to your office. If the dragonfly is a g2 and the EliteBook is a g6 onwards the dock will still be in warranty.

              • @Sean8802: Yup tried multiple laptops and still no luck if it's past one year they wash their hands clean anyway and just say it's non serviceable, I have questioned them as to why my android phone works and outputs to both monitors but they are perplexed

            • @solidussnake: @solidussnake if your company has say hypothetically 30 docks and 5 are faulty that isn't really out of the ordinary. But if say 20 out of 30 were faulty that is quite unusual. And if that is the case I would reach out to HP for them to investigate.

              • @Sean8802: Yeah I suppose you are right but considering we are waiting for 80+ on back order since sep 21 and the mass expansion of this program I'm working In we are having to trial multiple different docks before we change our orders and possibly wait another 6-10 for a different solution but in the meant time are buying universal docks from HN to keep everyone happy it's a complete shitshow lol

                • @solidussnake: @solidussnake I know your feeling all too well. All manufacturers are out of stock of docks atm at least Dell, HP and Lenovo. Just some advice, the JB, HN docks themselves are sufficient. It's the cable that plugs into the laptop which may be under specced. I've found on the ALogic docks the USB C cable it ships with is rubbish. I dropped off 5 of our docking (HP) cables for testing purposes to a customer to test on all of there 30 Alogic docks they had ordered. They test the replacement cable on multiple docks which resolved all the issues they were having.

Also if your HP docks are in warranty but faulty, request a replacement through support. The replacement docks comes out of a different pool apposed to new docks which have been ordered.

I 2nd that me too with state govt and the issue is exact. They are just thrown out. Waste of $300

    • I have one, it doesn't like my work Dell Laptop, but the dell dock likes my HP personal laptop. Explain that…

      • @Koffee If all dock firmware and BIOS is up to date on the laptop and the HP dock still doesn't work. On multiple laptops Contact HP for a replacement.

        • I got mine second hand from the USA, no warranty 😂 I've never had problems with an Elitebook (bar overheating and case warping on one) so while the dollar was good I was getting my stuff reshipped from there.

    • I've had similar issues with my Dell dock where it would drop the monitor for a few seconds at random intervals. Solved it by reducing the refresh rate in display settings.
      Might be with a try.

  • Does G4 have a fan inside like in the G2 and eventually it goes really loud?

  • +1

    330 for a dock. Wow

    • +2

What do you expect a Thunderbolt dock to cost?

      • -1

        About half that

        • Do you have any alternatives costing about half of this?

        • Lol good luck. Thunderbolt docks are $300-$600+

        • With support for four displays and 2.5gbe?

    • +1

From what I've seen this is what the price is in the market, but tbh i was going to ask in this thread 'why on earth are these things so expensive'? I don't understand how theyre apparently so advanced that they demand a price of multiple hundreds

      • @ Shunto Docks are like mini computer. Custom PCB, graphics card which can be updated and maintained via firmware updates. These things cost the manufacturer money.

    • +1

It is very expensive, unlikely to buy for personal use, there are much cheaper options available. I don’t mind spending 30 seconds or so each time connecting and disconnecting cables, compared to spending $300+ on a dock.

This type of docks, I believe, are mainly used in office and/or home office, part of cost to do business. Would love to have one when I am given a laptop by a company.

      • @orangutan For sure, I definitely wouldn't buy one of these docks for personal use. They are geared towards office use.

  • +1

I am using it for work laptop for years.
very easy to touch to turn off.

    normal dock.

    • +4

If the dock is a thunderbolt g2. The whole top is a button (dumb design) once you put pressure on it your laptop will turn off. You need to update the dock firmware to the latest version which adds a delay, the button can then be pressed for 3 seconds before it turns your laptop off.

      • oh, you are correct.
        It should be G2.

Lazy to, and also it is risky to update the firmware.
As long as it is working, I just put it aside away.
        Do not want any changes

        • +1

@wingzeroaa HP purposely make old firmware not work between devices for security purposes. Eventually the laptop will tell the dock not to connect until the firmware is updated to the latest.

          • +1

@Sean8802: Thank you for all useful information.
I will wait until it happen, then hand to IT support team. :)

      • The power button only functions on HP laptops. If you have a non-HP laptop the button does nothing.

        • the work laptop is a HP one

  • This one better?

  • Thank you workplace for having the G5. For a moment i thought this monstrosity was the latest HP Thunderbolt docking station.

    • You're right, HP USB-C Dock G5 came before HP Thunderbolt Dock G4.

      • Ehhh. I got a tonne of these G5's for free. Ill get some free G4's next time.

    • @BeoWulf I wouldn't think many places have the g4 Thunderbolt docks as all docks directly from HP have been out of stock for 6 months or more. Most of the issue that uses face with docks is misuse. Majority of users dock shove the dock cable into the laptop with force and which either damages laptop port or the cable. People treat USB C like it's a HDMI port and use way too much force when connecting and disconnecting.

      • USB-C connectors aren’t durable, can’t really blame users.

They jammed too many pins into such a small connector, shouldn’t even be an external connector in my opinion.

        • @orangutan I agree, but you cannot say it isn't a combination of both. Users are extremely rough with docking cables. Majority of users plug in the docking cable then give it one extra push which damages the pins slightly overtime you get a nonfunctioning port.

  • The HP USB C docks are slimmer - but they're USB C not Thunderbolt

They've been making these chunky Thunderbolt docks for quite a few years - the generation (G number) just keeps increasing.
