Good price for a not great SSD, but thought I'd post as some people may be interested. Also available for $79 from a brand new seller with 0 feedback (wouldn't recommend).

This is a DRAMless SSD, with either QLC or TLC flash (conflicting sources, it's also possible Crucial has swapped it out at some point).

I always would recommend spending a bit more for the MX500, which is currently $119 on amazon ($99 from a seller with 0 feedback and a new account, so I wouldn't buy from them.)

please beaware the seller looks completely new with a dodgy name. Imo avoid purchasing from them.

      • Yep. I bought a cheap external SSD on eBay from an unrated seller and took it apart when it wasn't formatting.
It was a printed circuit board.

Ah yes the well known store front and shipper hnhkxyysmygs

      Very reputable

Also available for $79 from a brand new seller with 0 feedback (wouldn't recommend).

Yep, look at the products they sell: pet tick&flea tablets, baby wipes, cotton tips, sleeping mat.

I'll bet they'll be marked as shipped within hours, fake tracking #'s and hope you forget about it until it's too late. For some reason lots of scammers seem to be offering cheap NexGard tick&flea tablets.

Happened to me recently, but I was monitoring the delivery. Raised my concern with Amzon, they initially vouched for the seller claiming they were legit. Either way I was refunded 24hrs later thankfully. Learnt my lesson navigating on Amzon when an item is priced too good to be true, specially minus Prime.

    Cue standard MX500>BX500 comments.

Only get this if you need one asap and don't have the funds for an MX500.
Otherwise the MX500 is much better for not much more, and is often reduced too if you can wait.

    • What would you recommend above a MX500 or is the MX500 generally the best SSD to get in this category.

"not great"? They are all awesome, compared to HDD or "the cloud".
Why do I need DRAM in my SSD when the OS is perfectly capable of using RAM as cache?

    • +1

Worse than HDD for sustained writes

Edit: if you're gonna neg me see this thread at least:

      • Neg?! I think you may be colourblind :)

DRAM somewhat improves read/write performance and almost doubles the lifespan* of the SSD
      (e.g. BX500 3yr warranty vs MX500 5yr warranty).

*Note: Lifespan directly correlates to storage size and write usage, and is quoted as 360TBW (TerraBytes Written) for both 1TB models.

MX500 1TB comes down to $109 every now and again on Amazon.

So for an extra $10-$20 your drive will last 66.6% longer.

P.S. SSDs can often last twice the length of their warranty for casual end-users
(e.g. those who don't do heavy video editing every other day)

        • Is there anything worth looking at above a MX500 in this category of SSD's?

I know endurance wise I think the MX500 is pretty much the same as everyone else in this category but is there anything that is maybe $20-30 more that is worth getting.

          • +1

@AlienC: Well, once we start comparing endurance of DRAM SSDs with each other the biggest factor comes down to the type of NAND Flash Memory used.

There are four types of NAND used in SSDs:
            '1-bit' Single-level cell (SLC) #discontinued by 2021
            '2-bit' Multi-level cell (MLC) #discontinued by 2021
            '3-bit' Triple-level cell (TLC)
            '4-bit' Quad-level cell (QLC)

In terms of Performance & Endurance: SLC > '2-bit' MLC* > TLC > QLC

!!! Note: Because MLC stands for 'Multi-Level Cell' some manufacturers take advantage of this 'vague' term to sell 3-bit MLC and 4-bit MLC in an attempt to mislead the quality of their SSD.

3-bit MLC will always be TLC (i.e. 870 EVO), and 4-bit MLC will always be QLC (i.e. 870 QVO)

            Endurance examples:
The $119 Crucial BX500 1TB* uses 3-bit TLC NAND and has an endurance of 360 TBW (3-year warranty)
The $119 Crucial MX500 1TB* uses 3-bit TLC NAND and has an endurance of 360 TBW (5-year warranty)

The $125 Samsung 870 QVO 1TB** uses 4-bit MLC NAND and has an endurance of 360 TBW (3-year warranty)***
The $139 Samsung 870 EVO 1TB**** uses 3-bit MLC NAND and has an endurance of 600 TBW (5-year warranty)*****
The $419 Samsung 860 PRO 1TB****** uses 2-bit MLC NAND and has an endurance of 1200 TBW (5-year warranty)*******

Does this mean that 3-bit MLC is superior to TLC?"

The answer is no, because as we mentioned before they are both the same type of NAND.

The difference in endurance here might be from differences in components, SSD design, or how each company tests their product.

It's honestly a bit confusing, as some sources claim that it is because "Samsung uses higher-quality components" and others claim that it is "just Samsung marketing hype".

So, I would take Samsung's TBW with a grain of salt.

Will the EVO endure up to 600 TBW? Quite possibly, but it will definitely last 360 TBW.

Will I use up 600 TBW before the warranty expires? Unlikely, as you'd have to write 329GB per day.

Will I use up 360 TBW before the warranty expires? Unlikely, as you'd have to write 198GB per day.

Is the EVO's endurance better than MX500? Worst case they're the same (5-year), best case EVO is higher (full 600 TBW).

Does the EVO perform 6% better than the MX500? Yes: https://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Samsung-870-EVO-1TB-vs…

Is the QVO the worst option? Absolutely!

Doesn't Noob Noob use an MX500 1TB? Yes, and in 4 years I've only written 72.611 TB.
