  • are these freshly roasted?

    • +1

Yes, I order from these guys all the time. One of my favourite and consistent roasters

      • What do you recommend? I avoid those that taste a little sour

        • Avoid stuff like pineapple, peach, and similar. Honey/natural as it'll have a bit more of that fermented/acidic profile.

Generally washed, plums, honey, caramel, etc flavours should be good.

I'm not really in the coffee scene - I just drink it.
Someone can correct me if any bits are wrong lol

I swear by Dark Horse myself, but it is a bit acidic (if that's what you mean by sour).

Crompton Road good too, less intense, more 'chocolatey' and isn't acidic, if that's your thing. My favourite cafe in Adelaide uses it.

          • @BradH13: Any idea if Crompton Road is medium or dark roast?

            • @Brakus: I'm not sure officially, but it's definitely lighter than Dark Horse. I'd say medium.

They are good. Consistency? Yes and no.

In general I think they have been pretty consistent, but one time (just one time only), they sent me a batch of Crompton Road that was just completely over roasted. They did replace them, with great beans (up to the usual standard)…but the guy (I think it might have been the head roaster or manager or something) was a complete dick about it to my wife (who had gone in to swap them over). Like, went on about how they have systems to make sure their quality control is perfect, and everything they do is perfect, so the beans absolutely couldnt have been over-roasted…just completely unnecessarily defensive, that they could never have put out a bad bag of beans, and unnecessarily rude to my wife, to make her feel horrible.

Lucky I wasnt there, because I would have been pretty pissed. Taste them yourself idiot…they were most definitely, without question, taken too far (further than usual). Anyone who had ever tasted Crompton Road before would immediately know that this batch was over roasted, no matter how perfect their quality control monitoring system is!

Anyway, I've stopped buying from them. Was probably a once off, and they probably do have relatively decent consistency / quality control.

But absolutely, 100% for sure, their quality control is not infallible - because that batch I received tasted like crap! (I wish I kept some, to make that twat taste some himself! But I guess he would just claim I switched the beans out for something else…)

Great beans though (when they are good)! (Wife just wouldn't be happy with me if I ever bought them again!), lol. :)

Edit: Just for completeness: their actual customer support people (by phone/email) were nothing short of stellar any time I had spoken to them myself (on this occasion included)! So it was just that one sour incident with that one person that is unfortunate - because otherwise I would still be buying their beans! (It was our go to bean at the time). But, there's too many roasters in Melbourne/Australia to put up with that kind of crap, so so be it.

  • Thanks op, I'm a bit bored of airjo Sumatra now
